How many times have you said "No" to yourself this week?

You wanted to ask for that $50k raise. You wanted to pitch that bold new business pivot. You wanted to ask that high-net-worth individual for a deal.
But a tiny, persistent voice in your head whispered, "Don't do that. Not yet. You aren't ready."

The truth? You've said "No" to yourself too many times to count.

Maybe the better question isn't how many times you've done it in the past—but what are you letting that voice say "No" to right now?

Yesterday, I had a session with a brilliant finance executive. His goal is clear: Promotion. He has the track record, the intelligence, and the drive.

The problem? He’s never actually asked for it.

He had the perfect window to sit down with the board and map out his path to the top. But the "Frozen Mask" slipped on. That little voice told him "No," so he stayed silent. He chose the safety of the status quo over the risk of his own potential.

Even more than that, that same voice was preventing him from joining a sports club to love his life outside of work. He was pausing his career and his joy.

In one session, we uncovered it and changed the internal narrative. We ignited the Frozen Mask and now he's actively taking steps towards those goals.

Here's the truth:

The "No" you hear in your head is protection.  Problem is, the protection is out of date.  Now, it's a governor on your engine. It's an internal system failure that keeps you playing small while the world moves on without you.

Leadership is a lonely business. But it doesn't have to be a death sentence.

If you’ve ever felt like no one truly understands the pressure you’re under—you aren't imagining it. There is a quiet, suffocating kind of loneliness that comes with the being a leader.

It’s what happens between meetings after you’ve made twenty "impossible" calls, and not a single person has asked how you’re doing.

Even in companies that preach "mental health," the unwritten rule for leaders is usually the same: Armor up. Never show a crack. Never be human.

I spoke with a founder recently who has run a successful firm for over twenty years. When I asked how he takes care of himself, he laughed.

“I don’t. If people smell weakness in this industry, they eat you alive.”

This is the Isolation Trap. 

When you feel you must be superhuman, you stop being effective. Your sleep suffers. Your decision-making gets fuzzy. Your trust in your team evaporates. Eventually, even the highest performers crumble under the weight of holding it all together.

The Truth: You can't lead well if you've stopped being human.

Isolation shouldn't be "part of the job." It’s an operational hazard.

I was exhausted. I was burnt out. And my Inner Critic called me a failure for it.

At the end of 2025, I hit a wall. Between the book launch, the podcasts, and the relentless travel to scale my business, I was running on fumes. I was looking forward to the holiday break; not just for the rest, but for the survival of my business.

But three days into "recovery," the Judge showed up.

“What’s wrong with you?” “Why aren't you working?” “You can't just rest—your revenue isn't where it needs to be.”

Have you heard that voice lately?

That relentless internal critic that treats rest like a sin and "hustle" like a religion? 

I had to stop and look inward. I had to audit the reality: the deals already closed for 2026, the world-class experts I’ve met, and the biological fact that an exhausted brain cannot lead through chaos.

You have that inner judge too. It’s the voice that tells you you’re "too boring," that you’ll get rejected if you ask for the deal, or that you’re a "piece of sh*t" for taking a breath.

Most people ignore it. They try to "power through." But that’s a lie. You can't lead through external market chaos until you master this internal noise.

Try this (if you have the guts):

I bet most of you won't do this because looking inward is harder than working an 80-hour week. 

But if you want to win in 2026, you need this:
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath and let it out with a big sigh.

Think of one big move you want to make: The raise, the $10M deal, the bold pivot.

Listen to what comes up. If you feel excitement, go win. But if the Judge perks up with “You can’t do it,” or “You’ll get rejected,” stop. Don’t fight it. Don’t let shame be your motivator. Just say: “I’m human.”

Master Your Internal System

Leading yourself like you would lead your best friend or your partner is the secret to unlocking your biggest goals. Shame is a terrible fuel source—it burns dirty and it burns out.
