A pretty punchy fact from the British Fashion Council (https://lnkd.in/eK3BzxMA) that does make us question why on earth we are still allowed to sell clothes at the rate we do? 

SHEIN released a whopping 314.8k styles in the first four months of 2022 (https://lnkd.in/e-GBhHA5) and the UK alone is buying two tonnes of clothing every single minute despite 11 million garments being thrown into landfill every single week (https://lnkd.in/eTa9HSTj). 

And it's not even just the end of life we should be concerned about. The National Geographic pulled out these staggering facts (https://lnkd.in/eCkAH6G4):
- Sweat shops force workers into long hours without rest days, make them work in ill-maintained buildings with no fire extinguishers, blocked fire exits, barred windows and poor electrical wiring and any attempts to form trade unions are quashed. 
- Fashion consumes 93 billion cubic metres of water every year (approx 7.5k litres are required to make a single pair of jeans!). Sadly agriculture and production tends to happen in highly water-deprived areas meaning vital water is siphoned away from locals needing it to survive. 
- The industry's greenhouse gas emissions will overtake those of the international marine and aviation industries combined in the next few years.

Another fact:
- When children’s clothing from the ultra-fast-fashion brands ZAFUL, AliExpress, and Shein were tested for toxic chemicals, the research discovered that one in five had elevated levels of lead, PFAS, and phthalates (https://lnkd.in/ePZn32RG).

Imagine if we suddenly stopped the global fashion industry and lived with what we had. We could survive roughly 100 years before any more clothes would need to be made. Whilst this is a wonderfully utopian idea, I appreciate that many people depend on fashion to survive as it provides income to many. 

Having said that, surely its time we started ramping up pressure. As legislators (like France are currently doing), we should be putting regulations in place that penalise fast fashion and reward those that are taking a much more considered approach. 

As businesses, we should be asking ourselves 'is our business making the world a better place?' or even 'is our business causing harm to planet and people as it stands?' 

As individuals, we should be questioning whether what we are buying could last 3000 wears, an idea sprung by Orsola de Castro. With all the ways of increasing lifespan of clothing from renting and upcycling to repair and lending, this shouldn't be difficult.
