Don’t just repeat everything that is in the job ad—that doesn’t say anything about who you are or why you would be right for the job. Instead, weave your unique story into your CV and cover letter. Showcase how your experiences and skills align not just with the job description, but also with the mission and values of the organization. Tell them about the time you coordinated a relief effort and what you learned from that experience that will benefit their team.

So, you’ve just walked out of that job interview for your next humanitarian aid job, feeling like you’ve run a marathon through a minefield. 

Whether you’re applying for a position in the field or an office role that helps the field, the stakes are high, and the nerves are real. 

But before you kick back with a celebratory (or consolatory) snack, there’s one more thing to do. 

Trust me, it's worth it.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬

You know that moment when the interviewer asks a question, and you think, “Why didn’t I prepare for this?” Yeah, we’ve all been there. But here’s a trick: make notes right after your interview.

Why? 

𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙅𝙚𝙧𝙠, that´s why.

Memory is unreliable, especially when you’ve just been through the emotional wringer of an interview. So, here’s what you do:

𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗯 𝗮 𝗣𝗲𝗻, 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲, 𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗢𝗻
Whether it’s a napkin or your Notes app, just get something you can jot down on.

𝗗𝘂𝗺𝗽 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻
Quickly write down the questions they asked. No need to be neat or detailed. Did they ask about your experience with emergency response? Or maybe they wanted to know how you handle cultural sensitivity in crisis zones? Jot it down.

𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀
What did you say? More importantly, what do you wish you had said? Scribble it all down. This isn’t about beating yourself up; it’s about learning and preparing for next time.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗜𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹
Now, leave those notes alone. Seriously, step away. Let your brain cool off, relax, and watch some cat videos or whatever helps you unwind. Come back to your notes tomorrow with a clear head.

When you look at your notes the next day, you’ll have a new perspective. You’ll see where you nailed it and where you can improve. This is pure gold for your future interviews. It’s like having a secret weapon that’s called preparation and self-awareness.
