Why is it when I look at old photographs I don't recognise myself? I wasn't always slender. Being tall often hid the weight I was really carrying...until it didn't. I ran a national events company in South Africa working with big alcohol and retail brands. This was pretty much a 24/7 job. My life was fast pace, endless amount of travel accompanied by minimal sleep. Fast foods and restaurants was a daily routine. Entertaining clients was a regular thing which consisted of copious amounts of liquor, and non stop unhealthy eating. Exercise was mythical, including finding time to prepare a home cooked meal. I was a slave to my work, growth and progress. Little did I know, it would be to the detriment of my health and overall well-being. I wasn't living. The consistent long hours, stress and industry pressure led to unhappiness, coupled with low self-esteem which led to the big "D" Depression. We often forget that in order to progress in anything we do, we need balance. Looking after our health is a priority. Look at life as a table, if one or more legs break everything comes crashing down. I realised this when I hit the lowest point in my life, and everything started going downhill fast.It was at this point, where I realised I needed to slow down or I'd end up in hospital or worse. I needed to shutdown everything and seriously revaluate the quality of my life. I slowly started introducing fitness, nutrition and finding balance. Quick question. If I asked you, who are the most important people in your life and you could only choose 2... Who would it be? ...Were you one of them? I'm guessing no... If you aren't making yourself your number one priority how are you going to be around for those important to you. Make sure you are happy and prepared for your journey ahead by looking after yourself first. It's not eating healthy everyday or working out 7 days a week. It's finding your balance.
