I wish to foster greater appreciation for managerial/cost accounting's effect on business performance and its deserved place as a separate and equal discipline, apart from financial accounting. In Japan, managerial accounting has long held a high position of respect, both within the corporate and academic worlds. American industry needs to realize how financial accounting measures and earnings management actually create perverse incentives for operations managers and undermine lean management initiatives. Academia has a major role to play in bringing the importance of managerial/cost accounting back to the forefront of research. I hope to play a part in this reawakening. Specialties: My research focuses on the dynamics of linking strategic performance measures to product cost for decision making and has been published in Advances in Management Accounting, Management Accounting Quarterly, and the Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management. I have presented at academic conferences including the American Accounting Association, Decision Sciences Institute, and the Academy of International Business and have been an invited speaker by the American Production and Inventory Control Society. In the 2021/22 academic year, while on sabbatical, I served as Visiting Scholar on the Institute of Management Accounting’s Research Foundation, reviewing corporate-sponsored grant applications for research projects for PhD students and early career faculty.
