As leaders, we hold the responsibility to nurture and advance our teams, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to grow and thrive within the organization. However, there's a critical lesson that often gets overlooked:

Promotions should never be based on favoritism or subjective judgments. Instead, they must be rooted in fairness and objective criteria. When we elevate individuals who may not be the best fit for the role or lack the necessary skills and qualifications, it not only hampers the progress of the organization but also leads to disillusionment among our top talent.

This quote underscores a fundamental truth: employees are not liabilities; al contrario, they are our most precious resource!

Investing in the growth and development of our team members not only enhances their capabilities but also fosters loyalty and dedication. When we prioritize their well-being and professional growth, we cultivate a culture of excellence and commitment.


J.W. Marriott captured this essence beautifully with his words, 

"Take care of your people, they'll take care of your customers and the business will take care of itself."

One of my most successful posts last year was about the “T-Shaped vs. V-Shaped Employee.” But, there’s more than just these two types. Which type are you, I, T, M or V? 

With almost 3M impressions and 32k engagements, last year’s post generated a lot of response. One of the most often made comment is that there’s more than just these two types. 

While we may be able to draw an entire alphabet, I like this typology of types: I, T, M and V that was put forward by Mike Dyne on Medium. This is what the four types of employee stand for (Dyne’s descriptions):

I-Shaped Employees
I-shaped employees have a narrow area of expertise and little or no knowledge or experience in other areas. While they may excel in their specific area of expertise, they may struggle to collaborate with others and bring a diverse set of skills to their work.

T-Shaped Employees
T-shaped employees are specialists in one area with shallow knowledge in other areas. They can be valuable team members who can contribute their deep expertise to the group. Typically, T-shaped employees are more focused and task-oriented.

M-Shaped Employees
M-shaped employees have deep knowledge in two or more areas. They are adaptable and able to switch between different areas of expertise while also being able to integrate them together. They tend to be more visionary and creative.

V-Shaped Employees
V-shaped employees have deep knowledge in one area and medium-deep, medium-broad knowledge in adjacent areas. They are versatile and agile and can switch roles and grow. V-shaped employees tend to be more communicative and collaborative.

I’m the V-Shaped type; not an employee per see, but a V-Shaped entrepreneur. I have one area where I have developed deep expertise over the past 20 years. And next to that I have built and continue to build a set of adjacent skills and expertise that complement my core area.

As the renowned entrepreneur Richard Branson aptly put it, 

"Train your people well enough so that they can leave, then treat them well enough so that they don't want to..." 

This profound statement encapsulates the essence of leadership. Leaders should not only focus on skill development but also on creating a workplace culture that inspires loyalty and dedication.


In conclusion, training is not just a strategic move; it's a testament to a leader's commitment to the growth and prosperity of their organization. By adopting a mindset that prioritizes training over blame, leaders can shape a workforce that is not only skilled but also motivated to achieve greatness.

The most valuable asset that  a company possesses is its workforce. However, merely having employees on the payroll isn't nearly enough! True success lies in cultivating a culture of engagement, where employees feel valued, heard, and empowered in order to thrive and flourish. As JW Marriott wisely said:

This sentiment underscores the pivotal role that employee engagement plays in driving organizational success. At the heart of the matter is the correlation between high engagement and low labor turnover. When employees feel connected to their work, their colleagues, and the mission of the company, they are more likely to remain loyal and committed. Richard Branson captures this essence perfectly with his quote:

Investing in employee development not only enhances skills but also fosters a sense of loyalty and belonging.Recognition, active listening, and support for personal growth are key pillars in fostering employee engagement.

Additionally, providing opportunities for continuous learning and advancement not only benefits individual employees but also contributes to the overall growth and innovation of the company.

They go above and beyond to deliver exceptional service, leading to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty.Ultimately, this virtuous cycle translates into higher profits and sustainable business growth.


In conclusion, the importance of employee engagement can never be overstated. By prioritizing recognition, listening, and personal development, organizations can foster a culture where employees feel empowered to contribute their best work. As a result, they not only retain top talent but also drive profitability and long-term success.


As leaders, it's imperative to heed the wisdom of Marriott and Branson and recognize that taking care of your people is synonymous with taking care of your business.

Dare to lead but lead with care....... 

These words resonate deeply with the essence of true leadership. As leaders, it's imperative to embody courage, integrity, and authenticity, but equally vital is the responsibility to extend care and attention to our team members.


Courage is the cornerstone of effective leadership. It takes courage to make tough decisions, to stand up for what is right, and to navigate through uncertainties. However, true leadership goes beyond just bold actions; it involves fostering an environment of trust, empathy, and support.

Time is precious so don't waste it....


There is no doubt that time is the most precious resource. Peter Drucker famously remarked,


 "Until you manage time, you can manage nothing else." 


These words encapsulate the essence of why time management is indispensable for leaders.


Time management is the cornerstone of effective leadership for several reasons. Firstly, leaders set the pace for their teams. If a leader fails to manage their time efficiently, it sends a message that time is not valued, leading to a culture of inefficiency within the organization.


Secondly, effective time management enables leaders to prioritize tasks and make informed decisions. With limited time available, leaders must identify and focus on activities that align with organizational goals and contribute to overall success. By allocating time appropriately, leaders can ensure that important tasks are completed promptly, preventing delays and bottlenecks.


Moreover, time management fosters productivity and reduces stress. When leaders effectively manage their time, they can accomplish more in less time, leading to increased productivity. Additionally, having a clear plan and schedule reduces uncertainty and stress, allowing leaders to approach their responsibilities with confidence and composure.


Furthermore, time management is essential for fostering work-life balance. Leaders who prioritize their time effectively can allocate sufficient time to both professional and personal pursuits, leading to greater satisfaction and well-being.

Ability, motivation, and attitude in leadership...


Ability:

Leadership ability encompasses the skills, knowledge, and expertise required to navigate complex challenges, make informed decisions, and drive results. It involves strategic thinking, problem-solving prowess, and a keen understanding of one's domain. Without the necessary ability, a leader may struggle to gain the respect and trust of their team or effectively steer them toward a common goal.



Motivation:

Motivation serves as the driving force behind a leader's actions and decisions. It's the unwavering determination to overcome obstacles, inspire others, and persevere in the face of adversity. Motivated leaders possess a clear vision of success and the passion to rally their team toward its realization. Without motivation, even the most skilled individuals may falter, lacking the drive to propel themselves and their team forward.



Attitude:


Attitude encompasses the mindset, demeanor, and outlook that a leader brings to their role. It's about fostering a positive, inclusive culture, leading by example, and maintaining resilience in the face of setbacks. A leader's attitude sets the tone for the entire organization, influencing morale, engagement, and productivity. Without the right attitude, even the most capable and motivated leaders may struggle to cultivate a cohesive, high-performing team.



While ability, motivation, and attitude are distinct concepts, they are of course intertwined and collectively essential for effective leadership. A leader may possess unparalleled expertise and a burning passion for success, but without a positive attitude and the ability to motivate others, their impact will be limited. Conversely, a leader with boundless enthusiasm and a compelling vision may struggle to execute their plans without the requisite skills and knowledge.



In today's VUCA world, successful leadership demands a holistic approach that embraces the synergy of ability, motivation, and attitude. Leadership potential and Understanding Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs:

 
As leaders, our journey towards success isn't just about climbing the corporate ladder; it's about understanding the fundamental needs that drive human behavior and motivation. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs provides invaluable insight into this aspect of leadership, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and addressing these needs at every level of the organizational pyramid.


At the base of the pyramid lie our physiological needs – food, water, shelter, and rest. For leaders, understanding and ensuring the fulfillment of these basic needs among team members is crucial. Without them, individuals cannot function optimally, affecting productivity and morale.


The need for safety and security follows closely. Leaders must create a supportive and secure work environment where employees feel physically and emotionally safe. This fosters trust and allows team members to focus on their tasks without fear of harm or instability.


As humans we are inherently social beings, craving connection and belonging. Leaders who understand this aspect of Maslow's theory prioritize building strong relationships within their teams. By fostering a sense of camaraderie and inclusivity, they create a supportive community where individuals feel valued and appreciated.


Recognition and respect are essential for personal growth and development. Effective leaders understand the significance of acknowledging their team members' contributions and providing opportunities for skill development and advancement. By nurturing self-esteem and confidence, they empower individuals to reach their full potential.


At the peak of the pyramid lies self-actualization – the realization of one's full potential. Leaders who grasp this concept recognize the importance of encouraging autonomy, creativity, and innovation among their team members. By providing opportunities for growth and self-expression, they inspire individuals to strive for excellence and fulfillment.

In the words of Theodore Roosevelt, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." This sentiment underscores the very essence of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in leadership.


It's not just about having knowledge or authority; it's about demonstrating genuine care and understanding for the well-being of those under your leadership.

Jim Rohn once said, "The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind but not weak; be bold but not a bully..." 

These words resonate with the very core of leadership, and here's why this statement is so vital for all leaders. Leaders should be strong and confident, but not in a way that belittles or intimidates others. True strength lies in resilience, determination, and the ability to deal with challenges whilst remaining calm.

Kindness is often perceived as a sign of weakness in the cutthroat world of business, but the reality is quite the opposite. Being kind fosters trust, collaboration, and a positive work environment.
