Duties included:

•The smooth and efficient running of the RCLS division.

•Supervision of staff and the allocation of duties, ensuring that all team members perform optimally according to their level.

Clinical Team Lead

A multidisciplinary blood analysis secondment to produce court-admissible quality results. Fully signed off as competent for lone-working within first week - and wholly responsible for training of new starters across multiple workflows within first month.

Duties included:

•CDT analysis of blood serum samples via capillary electrophoresis using Minicap Sebia Flex Piercing instruments.

•Liver function test (LFT) analysis of blood serum biomarkers GGT, ALT, & AST using Indiko Plus clinical chemistry immunoassay analysers.

•Full blood count (FBC) analysis of whole blood samples via DC sheath flow detection using Sysmex XP-300 automated differential haematology analysers.

•PEth quantitative analysis of blood samples via solid phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS-MS) using Waters ACQUITY and Xevo TQ-XS systems.

•Preparation of hair samples for EtG/FAEE/DOA LC-MS-MS analysis.

•Data processing and report writing.

•Training of junior staff.

•Participation in method validations and verifications.

•Preparation of standards and reagents.

•Ensuring compliance with GDPR, CQC, ISO17025, and ISO9001 - in addition to all departmental procedures, policies, and protocols.

Toxicology Laboratory Analyst

Additional duties included:

•Data analysis and reporting of results through a range of interpretative software to sample donors and relevant authorities. Including liaising directly with partners, and Public Health England (PHE) auditing and POCT reporting.

•NGS including manual library preparation and data analysis/reporting. Using Thermo Fisher Veriti, Ion Chef, & Ion GeneStudio S5 instruments, plus Illumina NIPT carrier NGS.

•Responsible for maintaining multiple vast IQC & reagent stock records implementing personally-designed excel VBA macro, LAMBDA, & Power Query automated solutions - ensuring flawless precision and saving dozens of hours of manual data entry weekly.

•Project manager for upcoming clinical chemistry service from concept through implementation - including procuring of materials, cost analysis/budgeting, SOP writing, software design, verification & validation, training of staff, and obtaining UKAS ISO15189:2012 accreditation. Procedures involving automated chemiluminescent immunoassay analysis of patient blood biomarkers using VITROS systems.

•Project co-lead for HLA coeliac & lactose intolerance qPCR haplotyping services. Including validation, H&S, and software development.

•Experience leading a 6-person customer enquiry team during rush periods. Implemented new scripts successfully reducing back-and-forth by up to 80% and greatly improving TrustPilot review ratings.

•Dedicated ‘super-trainer’ responsible for junior staff members across all areas of RNA extraction, qPCR, and NGS.

•ELISA antibody testing via custom-designed trimeric spike proteins. Including preparation, plate coating, testing, analysis, and reporting of results. Using BioTek Synergy HTX microplate readers.

•Sexual health qPCR testing plus validation work for serology test methods.

•Troubleshooting, repair, calibration, maintenance, and cleaning of sensitive equipment.

•Forecasting and ordering of stock.

•Additional responsibilities as a trained fire marshal.

Senior Reporting Scientist

Duties included:

•Accessioning potentially biohazardous specimens into a high throughput virology laboratory of up to 12,000+ samples per day. 

•Processing samples through a multitude of both automated and manual steps within strict 6-12 hour turnaround times determined by priority level.

•Receipt of samples and logging into the SalesForce LIMS.

•Manual sample reformatting of biohazardous materials within Class II Microbiological Safety Cabinets.

•RNA extraction utilising MagMAX RNA isolation kits using Thermo KingFisher Flex instruments.

•Real-time qPCR utilising a range of TaqPath, QuantuMDX, and Nonacus kits using Thermo QuantStudio5 instruments.

•Meticulous record-keeping ensuring continuity of samples throughout the analytical process.

•Interpretation and reporting of POCT lateral flow test results within strict 6-hour turnaround times.

•Additional experience with STI testing including: sample extraction & preparation, qPCR, data analysis, and reporting.

•Ensuring regular calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment and IQC of reagents/systems.

•Monitoring stock levels and waste management.

•Maintaining a clean working environment within a UKAS ISO17025 accredited laboratory and following daily cleaning procedures and environmental monitoring.

My responsibilities revolved around the daily care and general wellbeing of vulnerable adults within the services. Part of my duties also included assisting as part of a team across a range of complex medical interventions, such as PEG feeding, physiotherapy, and tracheostomy care.

Working in the frontlines amidst vulnerable individuals throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has ingrained within myself a comprehensive practise of aseptic technique, and a firm appreciation for the importance of PPE. This job also taught me the universally transferable skills of patience, compassion, and remaining calm within challenging situations.
