As a health & fitness advocate, I carry that same conviction into my work: discipline, consistency, and care for the people I serve.

Through local eyes.
Biracial families in Dolores Park.
Immigrants raising kids fluent in three languages.

A muralist splashes color on Tenderloin walls while, two blocks away, an engineer builds the future of AI.

The incense of Chinatown drifting into the Financial District.
The scent of Mission burritos tangled with gentrification.

Science and art
Tragedy and beauty
This city holds it all

𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦?

I’ve offered aloha with a smile to strangers, waving them into my lane like it was nothing.

I’ve also cursed at the guy who cut me off two seconds later.
I’ve poured kindness into people I barely know.

I’ve brought silence home.
After giving my best to work.
When my family needed my words most.

𝘐’𝘮 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩. 
𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘺.
𝙎𝙤 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪.

Maybe broken and beautiful aren’t opposites.
Maybe they belong together.

Maybe comedians have it right.
We need to laugh more
at ourselves, with each other.

Sometimes the only way past the walls we build…
political, cultural, personal
is through the crack of a joke.

𝘈 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴.

Maybe self-interest isn’t just selfish.
Maybe it’s bound up with everyone else’s…
the good, the bad, the ugly
woven through its crooked streets 

This city is a mirror.
It shows fragments.
Never the whole truth.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴.

Lean in, ask the person beside you:

"𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘦?"

Here’s the lesson:
Cities don’t change without people changing.

This city has always been one of reinvention…

from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake

to the Summer of Love 
that rewrote culture

to the dot-com bust that paved the way for today’s tech giants...

It burns down.
Rebuilds.
Pivots.
And rises again.

𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘹.

Maybe that’s the reflection we need most.
Not whether this city can rise again,
but whether we can.

To see the cracks not as proof of failure,
but as openings for light.

Because San Francisco has always been a tale of two cities.
Its story,

Most folks forget that about the 1993 flick.

They think it’s about time loops and alarm clocks.

But it’s not about the clock
it’s about 𝙬𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥.

Every morning, Bill Murray opens his eyes to the same cold day in Punxsutawney.

Same song. 
Same faces. 
Same stale buffet.

At first, he fights it.
Tries to manipulate it.
Tries to win.

But the loop doesn’t break when he wins.

𝘐𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴.

Not into someone flashier or more successful.

But into someone present.
Someone who listens.

Someone who serves 
without keeping score.

Someone who learns how to love, not just others, but life itself.

That truth sits a little closer these days.

I’ve been thinking about how we build something lasting on LinkedIn, 
in business, 
in life.

It’s easy to get caught in the loop.

Post. 
Perform. 
Pitch. 
Repeat.

But the good stuff,
the 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙛𝙛,
doesn’t come from trying to impress.

It comes from returning to work,
again and again,
with attention to detail,
steady hands,

and a hunger to understand what’s in front of you.

From building relationships the long way, 
not for leverage, 
but 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚,

and for the people you’re becoming in the process.

For the joy of learning who someone really is
beneath the titles,
the routines,
the highlight reels.

Because people aren’t bullet points.
They’re stories.
Textures.
Contradictions.

A whole landscape you only see if you slow down long enough to look.

Not just what they do,
but what they’ve carried.

Not just where they are,
but where they’ve walked.

Not just their success,
but the little things that shaped them.

This is the part we forget:
Relationships aren’t built by strategy.

They’re built by care.
By curiosity.
By the willingness to notice.

This Thanksgiving, I wanted to tell you a story about partnership, 

the kind that doesn’t make headlines 

but keeps a business standing when the tide comes in rough.

𝙈𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙫𝙚.

I grew up in San Francisco. 

City of fog and second chances. Raised on diversity, and Silicon street stories.

Steven lives on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, by way of London. 

Tide moves slower there. Steady hands, honest math.

We met a business owner once who ran his company on instinct.

Good instincts, too. The kind built from years of sweat, risk, and late nights.

Some people come to LinkedIn to collect followers.

I came here looking for my own pulse.

Could I grow my business here?
Say what I mean?
Meet the right people?

Back in April, when we launched our new Penney Counter site, 
I still didn’t know what my voice should sound like.

Every “expert” had a tactic:

Write a hook.
Post daily.
Share value.
Add a CTA.
Don’t chase perfect.

𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘦.

But none of it told me why I should stay, or what I actually wanted to say.

So before I wrote anything, I went looking for someone worth following,
someone who wrote like a human, not a funnel.

That’s when I found Jeffery M. Lamont.

Here’s what mattered:

Jeffery wasn’t just talking to lawyers.
He was talking to their whole life through his.

Baseball highs and lows, a father’s advice, the luxury of unplanned family afternoons

and the cost of chasing money so hard you miss the life you’re trying to fund.

Wealth as freedom, not nicer chains.

His writing nudged me toward the voice I wanted here:

not performing for anyone.

We crossed paths in the comments first.

That slow digital drift… like running into someone on a quiet neighborhood stroll before sunrise.

That’s devotion I respect. 

I’d toss in something about my SF Giants 

and during the Jays-Dodgers World Series I hopped on the Toronto train like a proud Bay Area traitor.

Eventually he said, “𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵. 𝘓𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘱 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘡𝘰𝘰𝘮.”

We did, last Friday.

And here’s what stayed:

I’ve met people who change shape the moment the camera turns on their profile is the personality.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘐 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵. 

Jeffery wasn’t one of them.

Talking to him felt like reading his posts, just deeper. Two guys in similar worlds, different lanes.

Talking shop.
Talking life.
Talking about the people we serve.
Realizing our whys overlap.

𝘐𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥.

And it reminded me:

Writing here isn’t just about visibility.
It’s about finding people who make you better at being yourself.

Sometimes that becomes business.
Sometimes friendship.
If you’re lucky, both.

The ones who remind you your story is enough.

Who don’t need you to play a role.
Who make this place feel like a long, good conversation.

So if you’re still finding your voice…

Start by listening.
Find the writers who make you stop.
Let them open a window.

When I was a kid, every day after school came with a dilemma.

Walk straight home, 
up three steep hills, textbooks 
weighing down my backpack like a cruel oversized ruck sack… 

or head the opposite way, a mile down, toward the comic book store.

And if I went there, it meant one thing…

There was just the comic. 
The guilt. 
The fists. 
The man with no fear. 

Hell’s Kitchen.
A man of law by day. 

A vigilante by night.
Catholic guilt, 
rooftop confessions, 
torn loyalties. 

Fighting in courtrooms and alleyways alike.

What hooked me wasn’t the superpowers.
It was the contradiction.

The daily wrestling match between justice and mercy. 

Strength and sorrow.
Order and chaos.

His greatest weakness, 𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, became his strength.

But for all his heightened senses, 
he was still blind to the war within. 

The torment.
The belief systems that chained him.
The inner noise louder than any criminal he faced.

Today, I’m not rocking red leather or leaping off rooftops. 

But I do work with lawyers.

And that internal tension?
Still very real.

Lawyers fight for others. They carry weight for their clients, their families, their firms.

They’re smart. 
Strategic. 
Resilient.
