Once upon a time in the distribution and supply chain logistics arm of a major retailer not so far away, there was a hard-working operational leadership team who worked in the sprawling metropolis of Leicestershire. Every day, the operational leadership team were run ragged managing an extremely busy and growing retail operation at the same time as trying to understand their KPIs, CTS, CPU and all the other really important acronyms! Then one day, a beautiful Financial Controller joined the organisation and assessed that the operational leadership team didn’t have the financial knowledge, data or Excel spreadsheets that they needed to really get into the financial detail of the operation. Because of that, the Financial Controller utilised his finance business partnering expertise and spent time educating the operational leaders in KPI and financial reporting and helped them understand what the reports and data is telling them. Because of that, the Financial Controller spent lots of time with the operational leaders reviewing performance from the previous week and period as well as spending time working in the operation itself to understand the source of the data that he was producing. Until finally, the operational leadership team truly understood their finances and were able to react and make decisions based on this data which enhanced their KPIs and cost per unit and started challenging back to the Financial Controller as to why they were performing to such a high level… * Maybe not the LinkedIn summary you were expecting but perhaps more engaging than a CV?
