I’m currently Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at Elyria Medical Center where I lead a team of 12 doctors and 5 nurse practitioners. This is my story: I became the pediatric chief resident at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, after completing my residency training there. This is where I was able to grow exponentially as both a doctor and a leader. Within two years, I became the chair of internal medicine at University Hospital Geauga Medical Center in Chardon, Ohio. I also led the Clinical Quality Committee there, where I contributed to improving clinical processes and how they affect patient care. During Covid, I decided to do something unusual as a doctor: I got an executive MBA from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. I transitioned to a new role at University Hospital Elyria Medical Center where I am now the Vice Chair of Medicine and Hospitalist Medical Director. As Medical Director and Vice Chair, I've successfully reduced patient length of stay while enhancing the quality of care. This achievement was facilitated by developing patient-centered approaches and promoting team-based rounding practices. I've also focused on improving communication within our team and with consultants, fostering a more cohesive and efficient care environment. My journey so far has taught me the importance of cultivating a diverse skill set beyond the fundamentals of the physician-patient dynamic. I strongly believe that physician leaders equipped with strong business acumen are in the best position to tackle the multifaceted challenges that today’s healthcare landscape faces.
