Mid Atlantic podcast

Mid Atlantic is a podcast which I create, edit, present and produce on a monthly basis. In the podcast I invite significant figures from the British and American political scene to discuss the events of the day. The format of the podcast is designed to allow considered and respectful debate, attempting to demystify and challenge some of the political rhetoric being reported. Guests on the show have included Sunny Hundal, a British journalist, blogger and academic, talking about the Labour Party crisis and Sam Tanenhaus, assistant editor of the New York Times talking about Trump being a force for good (!) Currently, the podcasts receive around 11,000 downloads a month on average.

As a British man of Jamaican descent, I have always been interested in my heritage. The small island of Jamaica has forged a new type of empire, an intangible realm of which there are no physical monuments, no official political or economic sphere of influence but when it comes to popular culture its global reach is immense, far exceeding the reasonable expectation for a nation of just over 2.7 million people. For a nation that gained independence from the British only 50 years ago, Jamaicans have left their mark on music, sport, style and language around the globe and have become an international marker of ‘cool’.

With the help of linguists, artists, musicians, sportsmen and historians I created a documentary series which examined how Jamaican culture conquered the world. 
Below is a flavour of some of the different episodes from the series.

Ep 5 - The Birth of Hip Hop (The Bronx, New York)
When Jamaican Clive Campbell went to New York, he started a new musical style that was to rewrite musical norms throughout the world. He created Hip Hop.

Ep 14 - "Jafaican", London Jamaican and Tippa Irie
When Jamaican immigrants came to London, they didn't only bring music, they also brought language patterns that would change "Cockney" the London dialect forever.

Ep 18 - The "incredible" story of Jungle
As the house music and the rave scene swept the UK in the late 80's and early 90's, Sound System culture fused with urban London to create an "Incredible" sound that became known as Jungle.

Ep 22 - New York
The Jamaican influence on The Big Apple has immense.
A Jamaican started Hip Hop, Jamaican Panamanians gave birth to Reggaeton and Brooklyn's population 10% Jamaican.

Released every Monday it features a comprehensive rundown on the last week's action in the long running soap, listener calls and whole load of rambling waffle. The Listeners seems to like it. approximately 20,000 a month and growing. Episodes feature calls from listeners from all over the world indispersed with interviews with actors from the Archers.
