Treatonomics.

I didn’t know the term until recently, but I’ve lived it.

When I was laid off, I spent eight months on savings and severance.
Every decision felt high-stakes.

But I did my best not to let my kids’ lives change too much.
The school trips.
The allowances.
The little rituals that told them life was still good.

It wasn’t about spending carelessly.
It was about protecting their joy while I figured things out. Thankfully, I might have.

That’s treatonomics to me.
Not mindless indulgence, but small, deliberate acts of stability in uncertain times.

This one’s simple. But not small.

Of course I got it tattooed.

Charlotte’s yellow submarine is already inked on my arm, so it only felt fair that one of Max’s drawings made it in too.

Why do some autistic people hate phone calls?

It’s not anxiety. It’s access.

Phone calls can be overwhelming for autistic people because they remove all structure and nonverbal context. 

For many of us, written communication is more accessible, more comfortable, and way less likely to fry our nervous system.

“Don’t label yourself.”
They say it like it’s kindness. Like it’s protection.

But when you’re autistic, the right label doesn’t trap you.
It frees you.

Before I had the word, I had shame.
Confusion. Burnout. Meltdowns I couldn’t explain.
A lifetime of trying to pass as something I wasn’t, just to survive.

Getting the diagnosis didn’t make me more different.
It made my difference make sense.

So no, I won’t stop saying I’m autistic.
And I don’t need you to rescue me from a label that helped me stop performing and start healing.

If you don’t like the word, that’s your discomfort, not mine.

This is the last post in The Illustrated Autist series.
A tiny daisy behind my ear. One more story.  

At first, I got it because it’s my favorite flower.
And maybe a little bit because I had a puppy in my 20s named Margarita.

But that’s not the story.

The story is this:
My dad used to read me a poem by Rubén Darío about a princess named Margarita.
I grew up picking daisies at my Mamama’s house, my dad’s mom.
And when she died, I realized those flowers were my favorite because they were hers.

The poem my dad read to me was the one she read to him.
She was the thread.
She was the daisy.

So I went back to the shop and had the tattoo redone in new color,
to honor her.

And then my dad died, not even five months ago.
The connection to that flower became something even deeper.
I read from that same Rubén Darío poem in his eulogy.

This daisy on my skin?
It’s my Mamama. It’s my dad.
It’s memory. And legacy. And love.

If I make you uncomfortable by being weird, direct, or unapologetically myself… good. 

That means you’re not my people.

I don’t dilute myself to fit in rooms I don’t belong in.
I get louder. I get weirder. I get sharper.

Because the right people don’t just tolerate it. They get it.

I signed my first official brand partnership as a content creator, and it couldn’t be more aligned with what I stand for.

I’ll be creating a video series with Kaboose, an app built by and for neurodivergent people, to support autistic and neurodivergent employees navigating the workplace.

For me, this isn’t just about content. It’s about representation. It’s about reshaping stigma into understanding, and reframing traits that are too often dismissed as weaknesses into recognized strengths.

The fact that I get to be paid to do this, to share my voice, my perspective, my lived experience, feels like both an achievement and an honor.

Happy Saturday to everyone except the ones who call instead of text.

The urge to mask kicks in. 
I stay anyway.

The right room stretches you; it doesn’t punish difference. 
If I have to armor up to survive, that’s not a growth room. That’s an exit.

That’s the room I look for now. Curious. Demanding. Safe enough to be honest.

It’s not “just a word.” It’s a word with a body count.

That’s why many of us no longer say “Asperger’s.”

Hans Asperger, the man the label comes from, was part of Nazi eugenics programs.
He sent disabled children to their deaths. That’s not up for debate. It’s documented history.

Today, most of us just say autistic.
Because it’s accurate, it's inclusive, and it doesn’t carry the name of someone who dehumanized people like us.

Language evolves. And so should we.
