My first time as a CMO, but it wasn't very pretty...

3 years back, I started a job that felt like a dream come true: I was the CMO at an exciting new startup with (already) 50+ staffs, with a great yearly pay. 

The beginning was all about the excitement of building something new, bringing in skilled people, and making plans.

But then I found a reality that didn't match the ethical standards I believe in.

Behind the scenes, the startup looked shiny on the outside but was doing things I couldn't stand by. They were chasing growth and investment in ways that didn't sit right:

- They played with the numbers to look more successful than they were.
- They made up stories about getting support from big-name investors that weren't true.
- They took advantage of interns by not paying them and giving them very little stock in return for their hard work.

These actions, mostly driven by the CEO, weren't just wrong; they were dangerously close to being illegal. 

After only 4 months, I decided I had to go. 

I didn't leave quietly, though. 

I used my connections to help the new people who had come to rely on me find other jobs.

Our professional choices define us, and integrity should never be compromised for short-term gains.

So, let your values be your guide, and never underestimate the impact of ethical leadership.

My client burned his budget for nothing with ads...

In the early days of any software development agency, quick wins through digital ads can seem enticing. 

Recently, a client shared their experience of running Reddit ads to attract their first customers. They invested $15 (raise your eyebrows yet?) a day, later doubling down in the hope of improving conversions. 

However, the desired results were hard to come by. 

This is a common scenario. 

It highlights an important fact: 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞. 

For example, Reddit may not be the best platform for reaching out to the kind of clientele we're after. 

Also, our industry's competitive nature often results in a higher customer acquisition cost than we initially anticipate. 

It's a harsh reminder that in the world of software development, securing clients isn't as simple as running a few ads. 

For those navigating these challenges, bear in mind that customer acquisition in software development is an investment. 

You should expect to dedicate significant resources - time, effort, and finance - towards understanding and reaching your target audience. 

Your starting budget might be between $3,000 to $5,000 a month on platforms like Google Ads. And even then, don't expect success to come overnight.

But don't let this deter you. 

Every challenge presents an opportunity for growth and learning. 

It's about pinpointing the most effective strategy, platform, and message to engage your potential clients.

Too much praise and nice gestures at work? 

While it might make you feel great at first, there's usually more to it. This is often a way to quickly win YOU over. 

In the business world, it's tough to tell the difference between real kindness and 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚. 

Knowing what this "love bombing" is all about:
* It makes us think twice about why people are being extra nice. 
* It highlights the need to be careful about who we trust at work. 

Being sharp in how we talk and interact isn't just good to have; it's a must. This is especially true in the competitive world of work. 
* The small clues others leave 
* The sudden spike in flattery

These points to their real plans and goals. 

But here's something to think about: when things get tough or go south, how do we handle it? The real challenge in our jobs isn't just dealing with too much flattery but staying cool and collected in tough times. 

Keeping your cool shows real strength and a head that can't be easily messed with.

So, to my work friends out there:

This made me see silence differently...

We often learn to see silence as a sign of respect or agreement, from school to cultural habits. It was usually thought to be good behavior. But, there's a twist: Being silent isn't helpful in our work life.

I started to think differently about being quiet with #UnlearningSilence. Here's what I found out:

- 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬: I found out respect doesn't just mean keeping quiet. It's also important to share your thoughts and join in discussions in a polite way, which can be just as important, if not more.

- 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟: I saw that being silent was often my own biggest obstacle. Talking about what I've done, and my ideas turned into my way of standing up for myself.

- 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐮𝐩: By choosing to speak up, I could also help others to start talking. Together, we made our workplace livelier and more interesting.
This change was very encouraging. Speaking up changed from being a kind of rebellion to being a way to contribute – to myself, my team, and the bigger work culture.

A weekend thought...

Many businesses laid off employees during the economic downturn, thinking it would solve their financial problems. 

My concern that this is only a short-term solution. 

Here's the thing: 

- Just cutting down on the number of people who work for you isn't going to magically solve all your problems. 
- If you keep doing things the same way but with fewer people, you're likely going to end up in the same spot, right?

Waiting for outside changes to come and fix everything? That's not going to work. 

The business world has really changed a lot recently. 

People are paying much closer attention to how money is spent, especially when it comes to new tech. 


March 2024 has been a significant month for cryptocurrency. 

Bitcoin hits a major high, ending March on a record note! Unless something unexpected drops its value by over 10% today. 

It's not just a win for Bitcoin; it's been in the green for seven straight months, the longest run it's ever had. 

However, not all news is good news in the crypto world. 

• The value of Ethereum compared to Bitcoin is dipping to its lowest since April 2021. 

• This change points out how investors are feeling, especially with some big decisions coming up about whether certain Ethereum funds will be officially recognized. 

Bitcoin had its ups and downs this March, with a notable dip in the middle of the month. Yet, towards the end, more money started flowing into Bitcoin funds, showing that people are getting interested again.

This month's journey shows how complex the crypto market is. 

• On one side, Bitcoin's success shows more people are trusting in digital money. 

• On the other, Ethereum faces challenges and a lot of guesswork about whether it'll get the nod from regulators.

Big names in the industry, like Grayscale and Fidelity Investments, are keeping an eye on things, along with BlackRock's Larry Fink showing some hope. 

But with regulation questions still up in the air, especially for Ethereum funds, it's a tense time.
