GIRL SPEAK UP: THE DAY A MOVEMENT WAS BORN

There’s a moment in every journey where you question it all.

In the weeks leading up to the launch of Girl Speak Up, I found myself there grappling with fear, battling doubt. It was my first official event. I worried about the turnout. Speakers pulled out last minute. Friends who had promised to be there cancelled. The pressure was intense. The anxiety, overwhelming.

Still, something deeper kept me going...a quiet voice, a calling I couldn’t ignore.

The theme was simple, yet powerful: Voice. Value. Victory.

And on Saturday, I witnessed all three come alive in ways I never imagined.
The room filled with young girls and women from all walks of life; curious, open, expectant. The energy? Electric. The tears, the laughter, the healing it was all a testament to something far bigger than me. It was the hand of God.

✨ Zanele Njapha, the Unlearning Lady, graced us with wisdom that pierced straight through the noise. She reminded us that sometimes the loudest voice in our heads isn’t our own and taught us how to reclaim it. Her presence was grace in motion. I left changed. We all did.

🎤 Our MC, Nontuthuko (Nonnie) Mhlungu was a force! Not only did she lead the programme with charm and fire, but her session on Personal Branding lit a spark in every girl in the room. They saw themselves anew...worthy, seen, powerful.

🔥 Then came Mahlodi Kgatle, the powerhouse. The moment she stepped on stage, the room shifted. She didn’t just speak, she transformed. Her healing session, where the girls spoke positive affirmations over themselves, ending in a resounding chant of “Girl Speak Up!”, left me undone. It was sacred. It was necessary.

As I sit in the afterglow, still recovering from the emotion and magnitude of the day, I’m in awe.

I remember dreaming of that room before a venue was booked, before a single RSVP came in. I saw it in my spirit: girls rising, healing, reclaiming their power. And to see it manifest before my eyes? That’s nothing short of divine.

To every girl who showed up, to every parent and guardian who trusted us with their girls we thank you. YOU are the reason this exists.

This is only the beginning.

We’re building a movement:

 🎯 500 Girl Speak Mentors across South Africa and beyond

Because when a girl speaks up, the world has no choice but to listen.

So this happened…  

I was featured in the Germiston City Newspaper talking about all things Girl SpeakUp.  

I grew up in the East Rand, and now I get to host the Girl SpeakUp launch event right here in my hood. Being recognised by my local paper makes it even more special! A true full-circle moment💖

The journey and story of my becoming is just getting started...

It reminds me that when you finally choose to walk in your purpose (without apology), you give others permission to do the same.

With just 2 days to go until the launch, I’m excited, nervous, hopeful, and deeply expectant for what’s to come.  

May this be a gentle reminder to:

No one tells you this when you start an NGO…


When I started Girl Speak Up!, I was full of passion (and still am) — but passion alone doesn’t build a sustainable NGO. 

Along the way, I’ve made mistakes that cost me time, energy, and opportunities. Sharing them here so you don’t have to repeat them:

1️⃣ Not treating it like a business.
 An NGO still needs structure, systems, and a plan to be sustainable. Relying only on goodwill doesn’t work.

2️⃣ Trying to do everything alone.
 At first, I wore all the hats — admin, fundraising, facilitation, social media. Burnout is real. Build a team, even if it’s small and volunteer-based.

3️⃣ Neglecting partnerships.
 I thought impact meant “doing it all myself.” Wrong. Collaboration is everything. Your network is your lifeline.

4️⃣ Delaying governance structures.
 I didn’t prioritize board setup, compliance, and reporting early on. These are non-negotiables if you want credibility with funders.

5️⃣ Not defining impact clearly.
 Saying “we empower girls” is good — but measurable outcomes (like “impact 1,000 girls by 2029”) help people take you seriously.

Starting an NGO is not easy, but it’s worth it when you see lives changing. 

If you’re considering it:
✅ Learn from my mistakes
✅ Start with clarity 

And remember: Passion fuels you, but strategy sustains you.

Nine years ago, my life changed forever...

I became a mom.

What I didn’t know then was just how deeply my world would be transformed. 

From sleepless nights, to unexpected hospital stays, to the little surprises life threw our way, everything shifted. My heart, my focus, my vision… all became clearer. My desire to grow into the best version of myself grew stronger.

All because of you...my intelligent, handsome, and humorous boy, Ezra.

Because of you, I dream bigger and reach higher. I want you to have a mommy you’re proud of. I pray daily for wisdom and grace to lead you well, to guide you through life’s ups and downs, and to always point you towards God’s truth.

May He protect you, bless you, and shape you into a leader who shines brightly in your generation.

10 Years in the Making…

Over a decade ago, I met Thandile Majambe , and little did I know that our paths would cross again in such a meaningful way. 

As a young graduate, I was eager to kickstart my career, and Thandile would often send me job opportunities - although I never landed a role through him (at least, not then!). 

⏩Fast forward to today

I'm thrilled to share that Thandile reached out to me with an amazing opportunity to facilitate a session on presentation and public speaking skills for the interns at Kagiso Trust (KT) 

What an absolute delight to work with the Kagiso Trust team and the talented interns! 

This opportunity touched on all three of my passions:

☑️Public speaking, and 
☑️Facilitation

Job loss can be a brutal awakening.
