“Failures” are just expensive market research.

My nephew's pasta disaster looked like a crime scene with marinara evidence everywhere.

Cement noodles. Flaming sauce. One mysteriously broken wooden spoon. The smoke alarm screaming like it witnessed a murder. His dinner date? She ordered pizza and never called back.

But here's the twist nobody talks about: that kitchen catastrophe wasn't a failure. It was expensive market research with cheese stains.

Tech companies figured this out while the rest of us were still crying into our burnt casseroles. When Amazon's Fire Phone crashed harder than my nephew's romantic evening, they didn't host a pity party. 

They treated every complaint, every "this thing sucks" review, every returned device like gold samples from a mine.

The result? They turned that flaming wreckage into Alexa, the smart speaker that now judges our music choices from half the living rooms in America.

Google's got a graveyard of dead products that reads like a tech obituary. Google Wave, Google Plus, Google Glass. Each one a spectacular belly flop. 

But every flameout taught them something valuable about what people actually want versus what sounds cool in a boardroom.

Most of us get stuck thinking in black and white. Success or failure. Worked or didn't work. But that's like judging a recipe by whether it set off the smoke detector instead of what you learned about heat control.

When you focus on what you gathered instead of whether you "won," suddenly every disaster becomes valuable inventory. That post that bored people more than a tax seminar? It's teaching you what doesn't land so you can figure out what will.

The magic isn't avoiding kitchen fires. It's learning to mine them for gold.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴.


Look, I'm not going to sugarcoat it: watching yourself back is like eating vegetables. Nobody wants to do it, but everyone who does it feels annoyingly smug about it later.

Here's the thing, though. Right now, you might sound like you're reading a Terms and Conditions agreement out loud. 

The fix is simple. Painful, but simple. 
You need to become your own stalker.
Get so bored with your own face that you forget the camera exists.

Grab your phone and hit “Record”. 

Talk for five minutes straight about literally 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. 
Why you hate cilantro. Why your neighbor's dog is plotting against you. 
Doesn't matter.

Five whole minutes. Not three. Not "until I run out of things to say." 
Because running out of things to say is exactly the point. 

That's when the ‘real’ you shows up, complete with all the "ums" and "you knows" and those awkward pauses where you're clearly searching your brain for words.

Here's where it gets good. 
Don't watch it right away! 

Your brain needs distance, give it a full day!

When you're ready, flip your phone face down and just 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻. 
No peeking. 

You'll hear all those "ums" and "you knows" that sneak out when you're thinking. You'll notice if you're racing through words like you're being chased, or if your voice has the emotional range of a dial tone.

Next, 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛 it with the sound 𝗢𝗙𝗙. 
Are you moving around like you're swatting invisible bees? 
Or are you so still you could be a screensaver? Both are problems.

Finally, watch it for real. Sound and picture together. Take it all in. 
Every awkward pause, every weird hand gesture, every moment you realize you said "literally" seventeen times.

Do this daily and something wild happens... 
You start catching yourself BEFORE you commit these crimes against communication. Your brain rewires itself.

Within a week, you'll improve. Within a month, you'll barely recognize the person you were. 
But your audience? They'll recognize you AND remember you.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲.


There's a World Toilet Summit.

Real people fly to real places to talk about toilets. 
They probably have name tags and PowerPoint presentations. 

And honestly? Good for them.

Because while the rest of us are playing the algorithm lottery and begging to show our stuff to someone (anyone!), the toilet people already know exactly where their people are. 

They're at the Holiday Inn Express in Des Moines wearing lanyards that say "Flush Forward: The Future Is Now."

Want to reach your ideal client?
Here’s your secret weapon, “𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀”. 
They exist for everything. 

Professional whistlers have one. Pet sitters have one. Balloon artists meet up and talk about balloon stuff. 

If there's a thing, there's a group. And if there's a group, there's a “List”.

Not some vague "target audience" you're supposed to manifest through hashtags and hope. An actual list. 

With names. Contact info. People who've literally raised their hands and said, "Yes, this is my jam."

No more shouting into the void, hoping your ideal person magically scrolls past your post at the exact right moment... You’ll know where they are! 

They meet quarterly. They have a newsletter editor who's probably bored and looking for good content. 

These people aren't hiding. Your “avatar” is in an Association.
They're hanging out together, waiting for someone to show up with something useful.

Which brings me to something useful.

Have you ever been a member of an association?

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 ‘𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴’ 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.

I think it's genius.

Watch a toddler learn to walk. They're not inventing some revolutionary new walking technique. They're copying every adult they see, wobbling around like tiny drunk people until suddenly... they've got it.

Same thing happens in the kitchen. You want to make killer pasta? You don't start by throwing random ingredients at the wall. You find a chef whose carbonara makes you weep with joy, follow their recipe to the letter, mess it up three times, then finally nail it. 

Once you've got the basics down, you start tweaking. Maybe a little extra pepper. Different cheese. Before you know it, you've created something that's uniquely yours.

“Communication” works exactly the same way.

Find five people who absolutely captivate you when you tune in. 
Maybe it's how they pause for effect. Or that thing they do where they lean in right before delivering the punchline.

Study them like you're cramming for finals. 
Watch their interviews, their casual conversations. 

Break down what makes them “magnetic”.

Then comes the fun part - trying it on. Some things will feel natural, like slipping into your favorite jeans. Others will feel like wearing clown shoes to a business meeting. That's totally fine. Keep what fits, toss what doesn't.

The magic happens when you stop copying and start creating your own communication style from all these borrowed pieces.
