Today I read about The Netherlands being 7th in the 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 2023, and I'm sure AgXeed contributed here.

You might think Movella is about human body motion capture, but we also power industrial, automation, and mobility applications. Agriculture is one of the markets where we see a lot of innovation.

In the video, you see the AgBot, an autonomous tractor by AgXeed, located in Grubbenvorst, The Netherlands. The autonomous farming machine has an #Xsens MTi embedded to measure the machine's motions. There are many reasons to embed an MTi, but that's enough food for a whole new post.

AgXeed's mission revolves around giving farmers back control over their time and decisions, and how technology can support them. in this time of sustainability that does make sense.

I love creativity, and I love VFX. 
And both come together in the videos created by 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗩𝗙𝗫.

Kirill lives in Latvia and creates stunning short videos combining urban environments with futuristic virtual elements. His 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗮 series grew into a worldwide Cyber-series including London, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Tallinn, and other major cities.

Remember the videos by Maz1999 on TikTok? 
She showed us a glimpse of an over-the-top AR future. Indie VFX takes a different route, he adds AR elements but also adds futuristic, cyber, and apocalyptic elements.

During a talk with Nolan Ether yesterday, I was reminded about the first #Xsens use in a blockbuster movie.

It was Alice in Wonderland (2010).

And, to be honest, it was a challenge for all parties involved...

𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆
It was 2008 and the #mocap crew at the 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 in Culver City had to deal with a novice technology. With innovation comes pain and there was quite some frustration on set due to the fragile state of the technology back then.

It was years before we solved issues such as 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘁, and there was no such thing as our magic 𝗛𝗗 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 yet. The calibration process was a pain and they had to deal with software crashes and freezes.

𝗢𝗻-𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲
Still, the idea was to do motion capture on-set, instead of separately in a studio. And that's what they managed to do in the end.

What I do know is that three (two) characters were captured using the Movella Entertainment | Xsens suit:
- The Knave of Hearts
- Tweedledee & Tweedledum

You can still find footage and images online showing them in the Xsens suit underneath their green suits.

And if you ask me how much of that RAW recorded data eventually ended up in the movie, I wouldn't know. It probably took extensive cleanup!

𝗣𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
It did give us a ton of experience about how mocap works on a high-end movie production. In hindsight, this was a pivotal moment for Xsens. All these insights we got on-set gave us the input we needed to build the best-in-class product for this market.

And so we did...

One-click retargeting in Unreal Engine 5.4 for Xsens users. 𝗪𝗼𝘄𝗅 🤯 

The brand new UE5.4 makes retargeting so much easier for Movella Entertainment | Xsens #mocap users, they brought it down to just one click for Metahumans.

Our good friend Jae Solina showed it in his last video tutorial, in less then 6 minutes he explains the workflow, and it looks so easy.

There are some minor edits you need to do, which he also explains in the video. But this new auto retargeting feature takes away quite some previous painpoints for #Xsens users.

As Jae said, it is new and there is not much documentation available yet, so you will need to figure out stuff, same counts for us. We'll probably release more documentation on this soon.

In twenty days I will have my first-ever named credit in a film.

You will see my name rolling by in the after-credits of the film 𝐌𝐀𝐗 𝐁𝐄𝐘𝐎𝐍𝐃, an animated feature film by HaZ Dulull.

✅ Personal fun fact
When I was around 12 years old, I watched Star Wars (Return of the Jedi). After seeing the movie I decided to become a visual effects artist when I grew up. I kept this in my mind until I was about twenty, then forgot about it. Recently I remembered this dream... I did not end up as a VFX artist, but I came pretty close working for Movella. 

It's interesting how life seems to work out.

🎞 About this film 
MAX BEYOND is a sci-fi action story that explores themes of family and redemption, with a multiverse twist. The film is entirely created in Unreal Engine.

🕺 Motion Capture 
Haz worked with #mocap legends like Ace Ruele, Gabriella Krousaniotakis, and Alex Kong to produce one and a half hours of animated motions. And yes, most of the mocap (if not all) was done with #Xsens.

MAX BEYOND will be available on Apple TV (and more platforms) on Monday, April 22nd.

It's fun to see a project grow from idea to game! I'm so excited for Nick Romick and his RetroPixel Digital Inc. team for the upcoming release of 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝘄𝗸 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗻.

I connected with Nick in 2021 when he was working on a project named SIRIS and I was heavily creating content about the Metaverse. Early 2022 he told me he was working on a project with 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘯.

He made the first demo in 5 days (see comment for video), during the Christmas holiday of 2021. You could tell it had something fun to it and soon after they decided to put more work into it and maybe even build their own IP. They also invested in #Xsens for the #mocap work, I'll share some behind-the-scenes photos in the comments as well.

In September '22, they did a closed Alpha stream on Twitch, and in early 2023 they released the Alpha on Steam, which I actually played.

Fast forward to now... They just released their first gameplay trailer and still looks so much fun. I couldn't be more excited for Nick and his team. Like many game companies, they went through some rough times, but they kept faith and now, after two years, it's almost here: 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝘄𝗸 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗻.

The 𝗫𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 combines inertial sensing with camera vision. This is one of our latest innovations and it's pretty awesome!

Why is this awesome?

That needs a bit of technical background, and as I'm not an engineer or technical, let me try to explain as best as I can 😊 

The #Xsens MTi sensors are considered 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁-𝗶𝗻-𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 and 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. And to make sure we keep this up, we need to innovate in the fields where there is room for improvement. Adding another reliable source of data is one of those things.

Traditionally our inertial #Xsens MTi sensors contain three basic components:
1. Gyroscopes - To measure orientation
2. Accelerometer - To measure velocity, speed
3. Magnetometer - No measure true north

Sometimes there is a fourth or fifth:
4. GNSS and/or RTK - For positioning
5. Barometer - For height

With this combination, you can very precisely estimate the trajectory of an object, like an autonomous car, tractor, plane, boat, robot, you name it.

𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗲
There are situations where, with all this data, you still cannot get a sufficient estimate. Think of areas where GPS is unavailable or rural, harsh terrain.

The actual innovation is about adding a camera for visual odometry. This camera determines the position and orientation by analyzing the associated camera images, with the use of AI and ML. This requires no external input like GNSS (GPS) or RTK.

It's best you check this unboxing video, it goes into all this and more. This time not about cool games or films, but about cool technology!

This year I visited some awesome #Xsens customers in Berlin. I'm proud to see two of them presenting at FMX - Film & Media Exchange.

I met Claudius from TRIXTER at their Berlin office and he and his team gave me great insights into how they worked with the #Xsens system. Their #mocap workflow gives them the advantage of having a superfast turnaround for delivering high-quality VFX projects. I also learned about the bidding process for high-end productions as they have done for many Marvel productions. It is far from straightforward and you need quite some experience and patience for it.

My meeting with Max from AnotherWorld was also interesting. Max has worked on several VR horror productions in the past and they are now working on a new game project called "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘅 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮". During my visit, Max took me down to the dungeon (not kidding, they have an actual dungeon underneath their office) to show me where they captured the performances. This dungeon is even 3D-scanned, and you can visit it in the game.
