Today was an eye-opening experience at ADAPT Security Edge’s Cyber Security Conference at the Hyatt Regency Sydney. Thank you Alison Walker for the kind invitation and your generous hospitality. 

The Cyber Future: AI, Quantum, and Beyond session, led by Claudine Ogilvie and Yvette Lejins, provided a deep dive into the dynamic world of cybersecurity, exploring the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
 
They discussed Cybersecurity as evolving into a business-facing role, with executives recognising the critical importance of data protection. As CISOs increasingly join boards, the question arises: are we adequately advising on risk? 
 
Recent breaches highlight the narrow focus of some boards, but AI is revolutionising cybersecurity, offering the ability to detect anomalies and track data like never before. Yet, the resources needed to meet risk appetites are substantial.
 
Boards are becoming more attuned to foresight, but there are unforeseeable challenges ahead. Despite our best proactive efforts, we often find ourselves reacting to threats.
 
The projected cost of cybercrime in 2025 is a staggering ~$10.5 trillion, according to Deloitte. Social engineering remains a potent threat, particularly for non-native English speakers.
 
Quantum computing, like AI, is on the horizon, offering both promise and peril. As Einstein famously described it, Quantum's capabilities seem like "spooky action at a distance". Its potential to revolutionise computing is immense, but so are the security implications. Governments are investing heavily in quantum technology, with President Joe Biden signing a QC law in the US.
 
As we navigate this complex landscape, collaboration and standardisation are crucial. Establishing emerging tech advisory boards is essential, given the scarcity of skills in this area. Conversations with executives must focus on timing and risk tolerance, especially with the rise of quantum-safe cryptography. Cybersecurity is not just about technology, but about people's instincts and behaviours in the face of evolving threats.
 
We need to embrace the exhilarating possibilities of technology while staying vigilant in safeguarding our digital infrastructure. By identifying and mitigating risks, we can ensure a safer digital future for all.
