A commercial photographer and writer from Toronto, Canada, from 1982 to 1993, Rutherford made photographs for advertising campaigns, trade magazines and government public educations campaigns, consulted on communications for industry and designed communications materials for public interest groups. After withdrawing from commercial photographic practice, from 1993 to 1997, Rutherford was Director of Communications for two Canadian non-profit organisations: an environmental energy group and a pro-feminist social justice group: men working to end male violence. Rutherford taught photographic arts p/t in Toronto from 1985 to 1994 at Humber Polytechnic and at Ryerson University where he worked under Don Snyder (who was previously the photographic assistant to photographer Minor White). While still an undergraduate student, Rutherford spent afternoons with Bill Brandt and Storm Thorgerson. After moving to Nice, France in 1997, Rutherford was communications consultant on high technology projects for the European Commission. From 1999 to 2005, he was Senior Lecturer in Communications & Culture at Euro American Institute of Technology (CERAM) in Sophia Antipolis, where he taught advertising, photography, cultural studies and history. In 2005, Rutherford joined the University of Chester to design and lead their new BA Advertising programme and to co-design a new BA Digital Photography programme. Rutherford joined BU in 2014 and is programme leader of MA Advertising. In addition to a BFA completed years ago, Rutherford holds MA degrees in philosophy and in education and is SFHEA. Since 1992, his articles on education, visual communication, photography and social justice have appeared in numerous academic journals, NAmerikan newspapers and magazines. Rutherford is nearing completion of his PhD which explores the use of intuitively made photographic snapshots as a means to enhanced Self-knowledge. Since 1996, his photographic projects documenting acts of collaboration with the medium have been exhibited in galleries in Canada, the USA, New Zealand, France and Japan.
