"Wealthy people are rarely close friends with people that they have never done business with". Observation from a friend of mine who works with a lot of high net worth clients. Super intriguing. He observed the pattern. Relationships start as friends But eventually they ask each other "how can we do business together?" Then they work on something together. By virtue of that, they become close friends. What's a higher level of trust? - Doing business with someone? - Or chilling and hanging as friends? It's interesting to explore how relationships are formed both business and personally. It's wild to think about it but a lot of my close friends actually came from LinkedIn - we bonded over some career topic or journey then discovered some common hobby after. Agency services are notoriously difficult to sell through cold email. It's customized. It's undifferentiated. It's instantly untrustworthy. Here is my top trick to solve that problem: π‘ Send your best case study of your best client, to 100 clients that are similar to them. I took my case study of helping a seed stage b2b SaaS company with sales, and sent it to 500 seed stage founders through 100% cold email. When I show people I can book them meetings through cold email, 80% of the time they ask me if I used "AI Tools". My answer is no. People get way too excited about the hype around AI, and forget the outbound is just 50% targeting the right ICP and 50% having the right messaging. Case in point - first campaign with Tempo Labs - booking 15 meetings - I didn't even know how to use Clay. All we needed is an email list of 500 founders who went through Tech Stars, since we knew there would be strong product market fit, and we made a "$100M Offer". In summary - start with clear sales fundamentals e.g. market segmentation, clear value prop, slick landing page. No tool can substitute that. 4 years ago I was laid off from Shopify. I was devastated. I was so confused, how could this happen to me? I decided to put my heart on my sleeve last week at Fuckup Nights Toronto Sharing the unfiltered story. You think you're doing great. You pass the 90 day probation. One day you get invited to a 1:1 meeting. But it's actually a 1:2 meeting!!! π©π©π© The rug gets pulled from beneath your feet. "Today is your last day at Shopify" - and then he just leaves the call. βοΈ And leaves me sitting there with a random HR person I've never met, leaving me with utmost shock. π± Looking back at it, the manager never liked me since day one. π My "fuckup" was chasing the shiny object of wanting to work at a tech darling, and ignoring my gut feeling that this was not the right person to work for. β π A key lesson I held for the rest of my career: "Never take a job working under a manager that does not inspire you" π‘ So many audience members came up to me afterwards "Ryan - you won't believe it - your story is so relatable.. the same thing has happened to me. π" Many years later, I can say getting laid off was the best thing that happened to me in my career. It allowed me to hit the "reset" button in my career and start with a blank canvas. Unbound by any previous career situation, I decided to pursue my dream job in NYC. I doubled my salary and realized my potential working under a manager that showed me the type of leader that I wanted to become. π If you've ever been laid off - know that this setback in adversity can allow you to produce the momentum to something greater than you ever imagined. Just launched a cold email campaign and booked 2 demos in 2 days. Good copy is half the battle. The other half is formatting. Readability.
