Sachin (pronounced SUCH-in) H. Jain, MD, MBA is President and CEO of SCAN, where he is charged with leading the organization’s growth, diversification, and emerging efforts to reduce healthcare disparities.  SCAN’s revenues top $4.3 and the organization serves 300,000 patients.  Under his leadership, SCAN has grown its revenues by more than $1B.  

Previously, Dr. Jain was President and CEO of CareMore and Aspire Health, innovative care delivery systems with > $1.6B in revenues serving 200,000 Medicare and Medicaid patients and 2500 associates in 32 states. He pioneered the first clinical program in the world focused on social isolation. Dr. Jain is also an adjunct professor of medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine and a contributor at Forbes. 
 
Prior to joining CareMore, Dr. Jain was global Chief Medical Information & Innovation Officer at Merck & Co. He contemporaneously served as an attending physician at the Boston VA-Boston Medical Center and a member of faculties at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School.  From 2009-2011, Dr. Jain worked in leadership roles at the US Department of Health and Human Services, where he was senior advisor to the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  Dr. Jain was the first acting deputy director for policy and programs at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). He also served as special assistant to the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.  

Dr. Jain is a respected thought leader in health care delivery. He is regularly recognized as a “Top 50 Most Influential Clinical Leader” and “100 Most Influential People in US Healthcare” by Modern Healthcare. In 2018, LinkedIn named him its top voice (#1) for healthcare.
 
Dr. Jain graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with a BA in government and continued on to earn his MD from Harvard Medical School and MBA from Harvard Business School.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of Abode Hospice and and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  He trained in medicine at the Brigham and Women's Medicine and Harvard Medical School, earned his board certification from the ABIM, and continues to practice medicine.  He is co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of the Elsevier journal Healthcare: The Journal of Delivery Science & Innovation and is an elected member of the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI).   He is an Aspen Institute Health Innovator’s Fellow and a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow.

When I was growing up, Diwali wasn’t a holiday that many people knew about.

We would either hide the holiday from existence or describe it in relative terms: 

“It’s like the Indian Christmas,” I would blithely tell my friends.  

Sometimes I would change my script and liken it to the “Indian new year.”

There were no school assemblies or neighborhood celebrations, no twinkling lights in department store windows or homes.  

No White House Diwali celebration as there has been for every president since President Obama.  

Rather my parents would dress us all in Indian clothes; quietly light some candles and diyas at home; say a few prayers; and tell us the pan-religious significance of Diwali.  

For Hindus, the story of good triumphing over evil, light conquering darkness.  

For Jains, like us, the celebration of Bhagwan Mahavir achieving absolution.  

And for Sikhs, the release from prison of one of their most important gurus.

At the time, I didn’t fully appreciate the depth of the holiday and our rituals—and its universality.

But as the years have passed, and as the world has grown more complex, more fractured, and more uncertain, I’ve come to understand just how powerful the holiday is. 

We are living through challenging times.

The news cycle can feel heavy. 

The world often seems divided. 

Many are struggling, in visible and invisible ways.

And yet, Diwali reminds us that light persists, that hope endures, and that truth and goodness ultimately prevail.

For me, the festival’s meaning has expanded far beyond its origins.

It is not just a religious celebration. 

It is a reminder that light is a choice we make daily:

To be kind when it is easier to be indifferent.

To seek understanding when it is easier to judge.

To build when it is easier to tear down.

To everyone celebrating, and to everyone who simply needs a little more light in their life:

Happy Diwali.

May this season inspire us all to illuminate the world around us, one act of grace at a time.

SCAN Continues to Expand Leadership Team to Align with Strategy of Becoming a National Medicare Payer

The greatest risk in healthcare leadership isn’t fraud or failure.

It’s something quieter: ethical erosion.

Not a single bad act, but a series of small, well-intentioned compromises that, over time, take us further from our values.  

Further from ourselves.

A recent Fierce Healthcare piece by Paige Minemyer captured this well:

Ethical drift happens when we stop asking hard questions about who benefits, who’s harmed, and what we’ve normalized in the name of “business as usual.”

It looks like this:

-Approving one questionable denial because “everyone does it.”

-Hiding behind toxic positivity that insists everything we do “improves lives.”

-Rewarding performance without reflection.

None of these are dramatic moments. 

But together, they define culture.

Leadership isn’t just about outcomes.  

It’s about doing the right thing even when it isn’t in our best short-term interest.

We need to build pauses into our pace.

Moments to ask: Are we still who we said we’d be?

As you reflect on this: are you still who you said you’d be?

Why healthcare leaders should be vigilant for 'ethical erosion' in their work

“I don’t know.”

Perhaps the single most underrated phrase in the English language.

Early in our lives, many of us are taught to present confidently.

To mask our ignorance.  

To fake it until we make it.

And, yet, there is liberation and peace in admitting when one is out of their depths.

When acknowledged ignorance makes space for new knowledge and personal  growth.

And, yet, ironically, the higher one climbs—the less comfortable they are in saying it.

What a shame.

“I don’t know:” the frontier at which pretending ends and learning begins.

Three simple words.

Words to live by.

Julie Vaughan Murchinson and I kicked off  the NCQA Innovation Summit with a fireside chat on “whole person care.”  

We talk a lot about whole-person care in health care. 

But too often, we skip past the basics.

If people can’t easily get an appointment…

If they can’t reach someone when they need help…

If they receive indecipherable communication…

If they don’t feel respected or heard…

Then we’re not practicing whole-person care.

No matter how many programs or metrics we’ve built around it or how often we tout the slogan “whole person” (some of my least favorite healthcare jargon, tbh).

Health care often suffers from a kind of toxic positivity—a tendency to gloss over dysfunction rather than confront it. 

We celebrate innovation while ignoring the daily realities of patients and frontline teams.

The truth is: 

getting the basics right is the work.

It’s where dignity lives.

It’s where trust is built.

It’s where transformation actually begins.

At SCAN, I’ve tried to stay close to that reality—sometimes by inviting members to email me directly (every one of our 310,000 members has my actual email address, not just a dummy account). 

Their stories, frustrations, and gratitude remind me that leadership in health care can’t happen from behind layers of abstraction.

And we have so much work to do to untangle the dysfunction and discontinuities that we create.  

But we acknowledge them and embrace the awesome responsibility with humility.  

We don’t need more corporate pablum and slogans about whole-person care.

We need to listen more deeply, fix what’s broken, and build systems that truly work for the people we serve.

That’s where real change starts.
