As someone who lived/worked through the decade-long plateau of AI development not that long ago…it was worth the wait. It's amazing to look back and see how fast the extraordinary became ordinary.

One day, we were dreaming of agents. Now we take them for granted and the length of tasks they can complete is doubling every 7 months (per METR).

Once, we were dazzled by poem generation. Now I generate multiple podcasts a week.

Vision - we can now show AI what we're looking at, get it to see what we see. The world around us through our phone camera, or the 500 reviews on a product page that we don't want to read through ourselves.

Voice - being able to talk to our tech is something I've been appreciating more and more. Literally thinking out loud, or getting to talk through an idea…so much more intuitive, and at least for me often way faster than typing away on my phone.

If you thought recent US tariffs may drive us into higher inflation, Jason Miller's thoughts shared below are just a few of the probable resulting realities with the de minimis exemption now in effect.

Supply chain professor helping industry professionals better use data

With the de minimis exemption, which has existed since the 1930s, coming to an end today, I imagine many folks are curious about likely impacts and which individuals will be the most impacted. One paper I'd refer everyone to is Fajgelbaum & Khandelwal's (2024) paper "The Value of De Minimis Imports", which can be found at https://lnkd.in/gU6YH8yx. I've copied the abstract and highlighted some relevant statements. Thoughts:

•Sadly, lower income Americans will be the most impacted by the ending of this exemption. I say 'sadly' because there is no chance that many of the ultra low cost items that were central to cross-border e-commerce will ever be economically manufactured in the United States. In other words, ending this exemption won't cause reshoring of production.

•Many small businesses in the USA will likely suffer with this exemption, especially those that were based on cross-border e-commerce.

•Transportation providers specializing in cross-border e-commerce shipments will also be negatively impacted

Implication: I will be curious to see how the American consumer responds with the elimination of the de minimis exemption. There will certainly be a negative impact on product variety, which alone is a loss of utility.
