Quick ecommerce bona-fides: co-founded and over a decade built a direct to consumer apparel brand from an idea on a napkin to a 7-figure selling store, managed design, manufacture and logistics.  Exited in 2024.

I once built a great product that didn’t find a market.

It worked exactly how we wanted. It just didn’t sell.

Looking back, a few lessons stand out (save this so you don’t make the same mistakes):

1. Belief isn’t validation

You might love the idea, but the market still gets the final vote.

2. Test before you build

Talk to potential buyers early, not once you’ve put in all the work.

3. People rarely change tools

You need a clear reason for them to leave what already works.

4. Sunk costs lie

Walking away early can save you years of time and money.

There’s being persistent, and there’s being stubborn.

5. Failure pays in lessons

We didn’t make money, but we got smarter.

Build. Test. Learn. Adjust.

That cycle never ends.

My daughter and I invented the Pinooski app. You’ve probably heard of it.

Just kidding. It doesn’t exist anymore.

But building it was one of the most valuable experiences of my life.

At the time, my daughter was in 5th grade and wanted to create a digital school newspaper.

Her first question was simple: “Where do you even start?”

Truth was, I didn’t know myself.

So we did what I’ve always done in business, we found the first sweater string to pull.

And then another. And another.

- We hired a developer
- We fixed bugs
- We got the app into the Apple App Store and Google Play

We started with no idea how to build an app and ended up knowing the entire process.

That experience taught both of us something important:

Progress rarely comes from having the full roadmap. It comes from finding the first string, pulling on it, and trusting the next step will reveal itself.

Find those strings. And keep pulling.
