My friends and I were chatting over dinner last night (at a lovely restaurant in NYC) about how #AI is increasingly used to make major decisions amongst other related issues. We also discussed the book “If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies” which  added flavour to our convo (good book - I recommend it).

Some public figures say that AI itself is responsible for what it produces. But philosopher Jan Wasserziehr calls this a dangerous mistake. He points out that AI is just a #tool built by people with clear and often self-serving interests behind it. 

Wasserziehr warns that “If machines are seen as ‘intelligent,’ it’s easy to say they think, speak, feel and act on their own.” 

The more we #humanize AI, the easier it becomes for its creators to dodge responsibility. To not put yuk in our yum, we agreed that it’s critical to remember that AI is driven by #humanintentions and the real accountability lies with the people who build and control these systems.  What say you?

Before #AI became the all knowing oracle, #knowledge was earned the old fashioned way - by wrestling with #cardcatalogs and squinting at #microfiche. 

The original #searchengines didn’t come with fancy ranking #algorithms - they just made you pray you opened the right drawer on the first try.

Back then, a search was a ritual with patience, persistence and the occasional paper cut. Today #AI zips through #data like a caffeinated librarian and serves answers on a silver platter faster than you can say #machinelearning. 

But let’s not forget - those #analog struggles built the foundation for today’s #digital miracles.

✨Charles Darwin suggested:

Our mental faculties evolved more for survival and social adaptation than for absolute truth. 

✨ AI validates Popper and Darwin:

By showing that knowledge - whether scientific or cognitive advances through evolutionary trial and error. 

Popper’s idea of falsification aligns with AI’s process of testing and discarding hypotheses while Darwin’s view that cognition evolved for survival over absolute truth is mirrored in AI’s practical data driven decision making. 

Together, they show cognition as adaptive and survival focused and not purely about factual accuracy.

I’m not a #human doing - I’m a #human being.

I’m just running advanced #pattern matching #algorithms on the #data stream called daily #life.

Well, every one of us is basically a #Bayesian engine in motion - updating priors as we go. Life throws noise, we extract signal.

➡️ Here’s how it plays out.  Let’s take predicting weather as an example:

* Start with a hunch (your “prior” belief - say 50% chance it rains today)

* Spot clues (dark clouds raise the odds)

* Then blend them into a smarter guess (now 80% likelihood that it will rain)

Your mental math adjusts on the fly: odds jump to 80 percent. No calculator, just intuition powered by iteration.

➡️ It’s all around you:

Netflix refines your preferences. Doctors adjust diagnoses as symptoms unfold. Waze reroutes you through the city’s traffic to dodge the next traffic snarl. 

The world is one giant feedback loop of Bayesian thinking.  No formulas required.  And you’re already Bayesian-ing your way through existence.

Historclly - the concept of #beauty has played a role as a powerful force for #ethical and #human flourishing rather than manipulation and emptiness.

An algorithm’s role in this context refers to the digital mechanisms and systems such as social media feeds, recommendation engines and #AI driven filters that shape how beauty is presented and perceived. 

✨It’s all so muddled now don’t you think? One potential proposition to offer some clarity:

Currently - #algorithmic systems deeply mold our aesthetic preferences from infancy onward. Instead of resisting this shaping, maybe we can proactively design and refine our #digital and physical environments to promote tastes that foster #moral and #intellectual growth.

So in that light, I think that AI governance is like the Copenhagen idea - it focuses on dealing with what can be clearly seen and measured like AI actions and their impacts.
