There are surface tactics - pausing, tone work, content improvement - and those will take you part of the to being a good speaker. Good enough for most people.

And then there's the real work - the internal work, the ripping out the guts, putting-it-all-on-the-line type of work, the type of work that 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴 who you are. That will make you great. 

It will also change your soul.

That's the kind of work that matters.

How can I make sure my team notice and act on my critical updates? 

1. Make sure they're 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 critical. Eisenhower matrix is great for this. 
2. Make sure you're not on "reply all". If your team knows that they're only going to get messages that are important or relevant, they'll read what you send. 
3. Write like you work for Axios. Critical information up front (don't write like those recipe blogs where you have to get through an entire life story before you get to the recipe). 
4. Say it over and over again. If it's important, it bears repeating. If you feel like you've said it too many times, it's probably not enough yet for your team.

“For the life of me, I cannot figure out why we haven’t closed this round. Somebody should have written a $2M check yesterday.”

He was on call number three that day, sandwiched in between Zooms and meetings in Manhattan.

It was disbelief, the kind that comes after 40 investor coffees, multiple six figures of ARR, and even a three-minute pitch on a global stage - crammed between two billionaires whose names you’d know - and still no wires, no yeses, no funding.

This is the strange dissonance of fundraising. To the founder, the logic is airtight: product works, clients pay, market’s huge  - what's not to like? 

To the investor, the logic short-circuits somewhere between “super interesting” in the room and “why don’t you lead?” back at the partner table.

What leaks in that gap is inevitability, not traction or idea or anything else you've heard.

And inevitability is not about AI trends or TAM slides or how many PHds you have on your team. It’s about the single sentence an investor can carry upstairs and repeat without you in the room.

If that sentence makes you sound optional, you’re done.

If it makes you sound inevitable, the money appears.

The tragedy is how invisible that is to the founder living inside the story. And how obvious it is to the investor who has to retell it.

Saying a tough truth in a gentle way
is a lost art.

Think of very young children's toys. 

They're all big and blocky, chunky and easy to grasp. 

Toy makers know that children can't handle small, fine pieces (and not only because they'll eat them!)... they're still learning fine motor skills and their dexterity is all over the place. 

This is why there are so many funny videos of babies smacking their parents. It's difficult for them to be gentle because they don't have fine grain control over their body. 

The same is true of emotion 

if we don't have fine emotional motor skills, 
if sadness and happiness are the extent of our emotional vocabulary, 
if we don't practice moving deftly around the contours of people's hearts

we'll never learn to be gentle. 

It's not admirable to be blunt
it's not cool to be stoic
it's not right to pour your trauma into someone else's cup.

But we can learn to be gentle. We can develop fine emotional motor skills

by learning the language of emotion (Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown is a great place to start)
by learning the dance of communication (no less subtle and demanding than a ballroom waltz) 
by learning from our mistakes instead of assuming we're perfect (because who, that's human, doesn't make these?)
