A degree in Applied Biochemistry initially set me on a path to a career in the Life Sciences - demanding and tightly regulated, my focus was on pharmacovigilance (the safety of medicines). After five years in the fledgling London office of a leading Japanese pharma company (two products licensed and launched in Europe during that time), a role was created for me at Head Office in Tokyo - to act as liaison between the Japanese, US and UK teams. London to Japan was a wild ride for a first expat living experience - the change of environment was exhilarating. Next up was an opportunity a little closer to home, a Quality Assurance role with a top-10 global pharma giant in Belgium. Living in Brussels, home of the European Parliament, a cosmopolitan city with three official languages (not to mention the biggest and arguably best selection of beer boasted by any country) was a wonderful experience. Then on to Bahrain in the Middle East, for the next thirteen years. Career adaptability and diversification was the key to finding a meaningful new path and I utilised my significant set of transferable skills to work with the CEO and executive leadership team at one of the premier and longest established, not-for-profit, British International schools in the region. When I returned to the UK in 2017, after seventeen years spent overseas, I brought with me a raft of additional skills - being an expatriate demands adaptability, flexibility, resilience, emotional intelligence, and cultural sensitivity, among other essential skills. It hones your problem-solving abilities, teaches patience, instils a passion for embracing change and how to thrive when you’re outside of your comfort zone, all whilst nurturing a global perspective. The move gave me an opportunity to pause and reflect on what I wanted to do next. How could I best channel the wide and diverse skill set I’d amassed? What new challenges could I embrace? I’ve spent the last seven years in consulting/interim business operations roles that have involved delivering specific, targeted projects, as well as adopting a more generalist approach to cover people, operations, systems and processes, IT, compliance and communications.
