Tala | Communicate Beyond the Bounds

On an interdisciplinary team of 6 BYU students, we created this company. In less than 1 year, we developed a looks-like, works-like prototype of a handsfree off-the-grid bluetooth communication device for rock climbers. I designed the physical product and the mobile app.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this was an on-campus internship through BYU. While that part was a little lame... thankfully didn't have too much of an impact on my experience working here. 

We worked specifically on the Abaca team (which is an app built by Village Capital) that connects social entrepreneurs to social investors helping them obtain funding. 

My team and I contributed in a real way and helped the Abaca team solve problems. The metrics and methods we used to track the progress they made so far, they have fully adopted and are now using those same metrics to measure future progress made. 

Several of the user research insights we shared and prototypes we created are currently or have already been implemented into the live product.

A little over half way through the internship, we lost our supervisor but kept going and moving forward without much supervision. 

When things got tough and didn't go as well, we took ownership and found creative ways to get things done. We needed to create a user persona based on social impact entrepreneurs. The problem was Village Capital was not successful in recruiting entrepreneurs for us to interview. Taking the problem into my own hands, I posted on LinkedIn, connected with 6 entrepreneurs, and interviewed them. We met the deadline, quota, and delivered the user persona backed by real user data.

I loved this job. This is the place where I discovered my passion for user experience design. 

While working here, I helped design two main projects. 

The first is called Educator. The project required us to complete a massive re-design the old system known as mYlink. To make a long story short, the website simplified the process education majors use campus wide to apply for their program and take them all the way through graduation. 

The second is called President's Remembrances. Commissioned by the President's Office at BYU, I automated a previously manual process. An employee was required to manually search through obituaries and take calls 24/7 for this process. After the design and development of the web app, incoming phone calls decreased, hours of labor saved increased. Overall, users responded positively saying using the app was easy and simple to use.

Also, I wrote an article about how to communicate the business value of design to our business colleagues.

We got paid to studying origami folding patterns, looking for new ways to apply them to different materials, and create products. 

It. Was. Awesome. 

Then we started applying these patterns to different types of food: popsicles, pasta, waffle cones. After submitting our work to the Milan Design Week, they accepted and were able to show off our work to our fellow Italians. Going to Milan was incredible and my first time traveling to Europe!

During the summer, I worked with the Compliance Mechanism Research Lab which is similar to what we did, however with more of an engineer's take on it. I worked alongside Ph.D and Master’s engineering students to create two origami based health care products (one of which has a patent pending).
