This week has been one of those that makes you pause for a second.

12 months ago we were a small, scrappy team managing a handful of campaigns.

Fast forward to Monday where we welcomed the amazing Kimmy Costa to Augmentum, growing the team one bigger and bringing in a wealth of community experience.

The word “community” has always felt a bit fluffy in marketing.

But Kimmy is one of the few people who truly understands how community drives business results... and how to design strategies that actually make it happen.

From my very first chat with Kimmy (when she was considering working with our agency!), that stood out immediately.

We’ve been growing fast this year (new clients, new campaigns, new faces) and it’s a reminder that scaling isn’t just about numbers.

It’s about bringing in the right people, at the right time, who make the team stronger.

One of the things I’m proudest of at Augmentum isn’t the client list or the case studies.

The reason?

• Great-looking content doesn’t always convert.
• High-converting content doesn’t always look great.

We’ve run enough influencer programs to spot the difference.

If your content looks right but performs wrong… start with this checklist:


1/ Wrong audience fit

Even the most engaging creator can flop if their audience isn’t aligned.

Vegan creator with a keto product? ❌

Female beauty influencer whose audience is 70% male? ❌

Wellness creator with a US audience… and you only ship UK? ❌

Always check audience demographics, not just the creator’s vibe.

Alignment > Aesthetics.


2/ There’s no real trust

Followers ≠ fans.

You want creators whose audience listens, not just watches.

Check their comments:

• Are people asking buying questions?
• Do they reference the creator’s past recs?
• Or is it just 🔥🔥🔥 from other influencers?

Great content with no influence = just a pretty video.


3/ No clear CTA

This one’s sneaky.

Sometimes the content is engaging and the audience is interested... but they’re not being told what to do.

Use clear directions like:

• “Click the link in my bio.”
• “Use code NAME10 for 10% off.”
• “Swipe up to shop.”

No CTA = no action.

Even interested audiences won’t act without a nudge.


4/ Timing mismatch

Maybe:

• The creator posted it at 10pm on a Sunday
• Your product is seasonal, but this was off-season
• You launched it the same day as a Meta promo and cannibalised your own traffic

The fix:

Add light coordination and suggested windows to your briefs.

(a little scheduling context goes a long way)


5/ No trust-building lead-up

Posting out of nowhere feels like an ad.

We’ve seen better results when creators:

• Tease the product a week earlier
• Show it arriving or being unboxed
• Mention it organically in a story or vlog before a formal CTA

A cold post is like a cold DM.

Warm the audience first.

Huel came to us ahead of their new launch with two big challenges:

Today the majority of the Augmentum Media team woke up to a very picturesque Edinburgh.

This city has played a big role in my life (I’ve spent 11 years here in total) so it feels fitting to host our inaugural Quarterly Business Review here.

The past year has been a whirlwind.

From 4 to 16 team members.
Fully remote.
Building the strongest reputation in the space.

Tomorrow we’ll dive deep into everything that matters:

But the QBR is about more than metrics.

It’s about bringing the team together.

And, let’s be honest, I’ll probably spend the weekend catching up on everything I missed in between.

I love this side of what we do... the events, the in-person meetings, the energy that comes from being around people building great things.

But it’s a hard balance.

Because every time you travel, you lose rhythm.
You lose the focus that comes from routine.

And that’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

There’s this constant pull between being present and being productive.

Between showing up in the room… and having the headspace to do the deeper work that actually moves things forward.

When you’re building something, it’s easy to tell yourself you need to be everywhere.

But every “yes” costs something - usually time, energy, or clarity.

Our network has been one of the biggest growth drivers of Augmentum.

It’s been a goldmine for knowledge, avoiding pitfalls, and unlocking opportunities we didn’t even know existed.

It’s how we’ve built what I genuinely believe is the strongest reputation and lowest client churn in the industry.

We have incredible software partners, agency partners & clients to bounce ideas off of and talk all things growth.

Most initially come from events like Shoptalk (pictured) and then are nurtured over time.

And that network amplifies everything we do.

Big news dropped this week.

The IPA just released what’s being called the first proper cross-industry, cross-market study on influencer effectiveness - and it dismantles a lot of what the industry’s been running on “gut.”

The research looked at 220 campaigns across 144 brands and 28 markets, tracking over £133 million in influencer spend.

And the findings are pretty wild.

Short-term ROI came in at 99 (basically identical to the all-channel average of 100).

Influencer activity accounted for roughly 4.5% of short-term sales.

But long-term ROI? 151. That’s almost double paid social, and higher than linear TV.

The biggest predictors of success weren’t budget or optimisation. They were brand–creator fit and creative quality.

So yes, influencer marketing can drive short-term sales…

But its real strength is in how it compounds over time.

Which means one thing:

You can’t treat influencers like ads.
You have to treat them like brand investments.

If I were a brand, here’s what I’d change tomorrow.

First - stop expecting instant ROI.

The early posts aren’t there to sell. They’re there to build trust. Cut them off too early, and you kill the compounding effect before it starts.

Second - focus less on spend, more on fit.

The creator matters more than the CPM. So does the story you tell together.

And third - think in systems, not spikes.

Great influencer programs aren’t one-off activations. They’re layered. You seed, you convert to affiliates, you whitelist what performs, you build long-term partnerships, and you recycle that content across every channel.

The takeaway’s simple.
Stop treating influencer marketing like a cost.
Start treating it like an asset.

Because when you zoom out, influencers don’t just sell products.
They build brands.
