Chief Executive Officer

DXC Technology

Recruited to return to Australia as Chief Technology Officer for NYSE-listed DXC Technology, formerly Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). Served on the Senior Leadership Team and oversaw all technical aspects of the regional business, including the establishment of a distributed team of 10 specialist CTOs. Established the Sydney Innovation Centre and a global network of six such facilities spanning London, Paris, Tokyo, Singapore, and Washington DC. Contributed to the SLT's overall strategy for the $430m acquisition and integration of UXC, setting the stage for the global $26bn spin-merger with HP ES to form DXC Technology.

Elevated to Director of Labs in a global role based in Singapore, where I led a complex, hybrid organisation of over 100 developers—both directly managed and matrixed from other units—across eight R&D hubs. Supervised managers of managers and specialised teams, each focusing on emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, computer vision & voice, drones & robotics, IoT, 3D printing, blockchain, and quantum computing. Introduced 'design engineering' and delivered 'concept to cash' innovation using Agile/SAFe methodologies, utilising lab innovations to drive digital transformation of both customers and offerings, as well as refreshing and refocusing the company’s global workforce of approximately 140,000. Also stewarded IP workstreams through critical M&A transactions, including a $2bn acquisition and a $5bn divestment.

Equinix

Joined Equinix from Google, having worked with them as a supplier, to help them understand the changing needs of large enterprise and cloud providers, tailor products & services accordingly and create a strategy to further expand the largest and fastest growing vertical.

Introduced and advocated the cloud exchange concept, and built a cloud ecosystem around it — a critical mass of best-of-breed cloud providers running on Platform Equinix (which consists of 200+ datacenters in dozens of markets), available through the Equnix Marketplace and accessible via Equinix's various interconnectivity services.

Google

Joined Google ostensibly to work on their Ganeti-based "private cloud" infrastructure, but was allocated to the global tape backup program as the team’s technical program manager.

Worked on the rapid expansion of the program, enhancement of the hardware & software systems, research & development, off-line & near-line storage, security and vendor relations (RFIs, performance management, contracts, payments, etc). Site surveyed all of the Google-owned datacenters in production at the time and initiated expansion projects at each of them.

As Cloud Standards Lead I worked with Vint Cerf and his team on the development and promotion of open standards in cloud computing by way of internal & external events & awards, which I organised and/or attended.

Revevol Group

Founded a successful, multi-national cloud computing startup delivering strategic consulting and cloud computing solutions for communication, collaboration and search, to the top French companies (CAC 40) including AXA, Essilor, L'Oréal, Nexans, Sanofi-Aventis, Solvay and Valeo.

Architected and deployed a competitive pilot of Google Apps (now G Suite) as the first Google Enterprise Partner in Europe, which became the first large enterprise cloud computing deployment with over 30,000 users. Left to work for Google in Switzerland.

Citrix

Joined Citrix as a "Lead Technical Support Engineer" and was quickly promoted to "Global Escalation Engineer" where I managed escalated, technically complex mission critical or politically hot customer issues, designed and coordinated code changes with developers and maintained ownership of issues through QA and public release. Developed a Ruby on Rails project management tool for escalation tracking and customer notifications.

Worked in Silicon Valley on various acquisitions (including Net6, NetScaler, Orbital Data & Teros), forming the Application Networking Group, building out support teams and virtualising appliances on Xen for training, support, and development & testing purposes. Left to pursue a startup opportunity in Paris.

Founded a successful, long-lived technology startup as the Internet went mainstream, delivering connected IT solutions to education, government, legal, finance, insurance, hospitality, media and other sectors.

No two projects alike, the small team worked on everything from secure and reliable internal infrastructure to e-commerce platforms for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and SOLD.com.au ("Australia's eBay", which went on to become Yahoo! Auctions), and more recently cloud computing solutions for large enterprises like Sanofi-aventis.

Sam Johnston (CMgr FCMI/FIML GAICD MACS Snr CP) is an Australian technology executive and serial entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience founding and advising startups, and in leadership roles at top global technology companies including Google, Equinix, Citrix, and DXC Technology.

Sam is currently CEO at Acumino, a Singapore venture studio focusing on emerging technologies and disruptive innovation. He is working with other founders to create the businesses of tomorrow by applying his research into emerging technologies including drones, robotics & humanoids, 3D printing, computer vision & voice, augmented & virtual reality, artificial intelligence & machine learning, blockchain, chatbots, and quantum computing.

Sam has a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, an executive MBA specialising in finance from S P Jain School of Global Management in Singapore, and is completing a Master of Science in computer science specialising in machine learning at Georgia Tech. He has lived and worked in Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America.
