Here's how it works in practice:

Write the proposal first. Before any meeting, the engineer writes a brief doc outlining the problem, proposed solution, and trade-offs. Even if it takes 20 minutes.

Tag for review. Teammates review async within 24 hours. Questions and concerns get documented. The decision-maker sees all perspectives before any real-time discussion.

Meet only to resolve, not to discuss. If consensus emerges async, skip the meeting. If not, the sync call focuses purely on resolving specific blockers—not rehashing what's already in the doc.

The results? Our team cut meeting time by 40%. More importantly, junior engineers started contributing better ideas because they had time to think, not just react in real-time.

React Server Components are blurring the line between frontend and backend. Next.js + Node.js is now a genuinely viable full-stack solution—not just for startups, but for scale.

But here's the thing technical founders often miss: Your stack choice is a business decision, not just a technical one.

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭 + 𝐍𝐨𝐝𝐞:

1. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 - Can we ship fast without sacrificing maintainability?

2. 𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 - Can we actually find developers who know this stack? (In African markets, React still dominates)

3. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 - Will this work on 2G networks with 1GB RAM devices?

I've seen this stack serve millions of requests in production. It works—but only when you understand its trade-offs.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: The best stack is the one your team can execute on, that your market can support, and that solves actual user problems.

Not the one that trends on Twitter.

But I don't just mean REST…

I mean understanding when to use…

1. GraphQL for complex data requirements
2. gRPC for microservice communication
3. Server-Sent Events for one-way updates
4. REST for standard CRUD operations
5. Webhooks for event-driven integrations
6. WebSockets for real-time features
7. Streaming APIs for large datasets
8. Batch APIs for bulk operations
9. RPC for internal service calls

…and knowing the tradeoffs of each.

Because there's no one-size-fits-all solution…

REST is simple and widely adopted, but can be chatty.

GraphQL gives clients control, but adds complexity.

GRPC is fast and efficient, but less human-readable.

WebSockets enable real-time, but require persistent connections.

So think about that -

Your API design should match your actual needs, not just follow trends.

The wrong pattern will cost you in performance, developer experience, and maintenance.

The right pattern will make your Node.js app faster, cleaner, and easier to scale.
