Submarine Sonar Systems Designer

Whilst working with BAE Systems and Leonardo MW, I provided product consultancy services to design, develop and deliver a bespoke Post Flight Analysis tool for the Eurofighter Typhoon.

This role involved managing internal and external stakeholders including; Quality Teams, the customer, Software Teams and Commercial Teams to identify both critical technical and commercial risks. 

Within this role, I lead various customer-facing design reviews to establish product maturity and compliance. 

Further to this work, I was responsible for addressing integration challenges with other product teams. This required both technical definition and commercial negotiations.

LTEWP Electronic Warfare Product Consultant

During 2019 I consulted on multiple workshops with BAE Systems and partners who were looking to leverage the power of data within their product eco-system.

This included addressing international, multi-domain and multi-OEM networking challenges alongside differing security requirements,  including OpenSource, Restricted and SECRET systems. 

During an internal project referred to as a 'Hackathon' I worked with senior technologists to develop an architecture that would support multi-domain operations whilst maintaining legacy platforms and products. 

Further research was conducted into the utility of G-Cloud and other pan-military initiatives.

Data Analytics - Workshop Team Lead (Leveraging Data)

World-wide Secure IT Infrastructure and Systems User Experience Design
Further Consultative work:
My primary role within this project was to conceive, design and develop secure IT infrastructure, delivery of application updates, user data security and user profile management in line with the National Cyber Security Council (NCSC) guidance to SUKEO. 

This included hardware, software and 'virtual' IT design, including cloud computing, cryptography and network security design. 

To deliver this project I was given scope to innovate through organisational disruption, local cultural challenge initiating motivation and ownership of challenges within teams.

Consideration was given to User Interface (UI) Design and administration of the system so as to reduce support costs and increase profitability of future business.

To achieve this I initiated the 'current state' analysis of 6 multi-million pound engineering projects.

As an interim step to implementing my designs a single product, delivered on a quarterly basis, was taken from a 6 week, 6 person task, reduced to a single day, inc; build, test and release. Locally it was nominated for a ‘Chairman’s Award’

Using cloud computing architecture I was able to conceive savings into the millions.

Rapid bespoke application software was specified to use the universal windows platform (UWP), allowing the use of Hololens and tablet devices.

Working closely with the Business Director on a consultative basis I have developed the Telecoms Arm of the companies Business Strategy with a view to becoming the North Wests Leading Telecom Supplier. 

This strategy has included business fundamentals along with clear marketing and growth plans to better align the business to the current market. 

Development and management of training, resources and tools have been part of my direct responsibility.

Working as a dynamic Aircraft Ground Equipment (AGE) In-Service/Optimisation Systems Consultant. Working as an AGE In-Service Engineering focal point responsible for delivering an Aircraft platform’s AGE In-Service Support primarily to Export Customers. 
Leading and providing timely responses to all AGE related formal / informal Queries, Problem & Defect Investigations and Technical Warnings and where possible optimise the AGE Support Product Set. Working as a self-motivated individual able to communicate and influence across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

Responsible for managing internal and external stakeholders against a product strategy roadmap that maintains and establishes a competitive position in the marketplace.

Head of Product Management - UK & Europe

My role in this project has been to develop the initial concept, design and prototype of an interactive axe throwing game.

This game aims to increase the revenues of the venue owner through improved gameplay of its visitors.

The game projects interactive games onto the target space, whilst the thrower and axe are tracked during the throw. 

This then enables a system to update the projected game and game scoring system.

This project is currently in development and I cannot share any further details.

My role in this project has been to work with the customer to meet their early-stage product development needs.

This project has initially been limited in scope to providing prototype electronics to deliver an environment cooling system with no moving parts.

Botanic Energy - Electronics Consultancy 

Product: STANAG3910 Electronics
Role: Head of Product Management

My role in this project was to understand the customer’s requirements, develop a product roadmap and commercial model that met all parties aspirations.

In 2021 GSS provided a set of electronics to support RAIT88 in developing a new piece of Operational Ground Support Equipment for the Italian Eurofighter Typhoon. 

We have been working to develop solutions that address the need to replace and update equipment that is obsolete in this domain.

My role during this project has been to put together the training materials against a known specification. 

Whilst we are aligning this to a new version of a product.

This project has not yet been contracted or initiated, so my work has been predominantly in the bidding, specification and design phase.

BAE Systems - LTEWP Databus Analyser Training

My role on this project was as Product Management Lead, coordinating the Technical and Commercial Aspects; the software product design was limited to an API and data exports. 

Proxisense is heavily aligned with industry and has strong partnerships with Rolls Royce Aeroengines, CEG and ABB, and governments in Ghana and Thailand. 

Their customers typically have equipment that operates at extremely high temperatures with high tolerances, for instance, Jet Turbine Engines, Gas Turbine Engines and High-Pressure Turbos. 

Using a range of propriety sensors, GSS worked with Proxisense to develop electronics that would enable oil debris to be detected. 

During user workshops and user interviews, it became clear that the long term commercial roadmap for these projects was to incorporate the sensor within the OEM system and use onboard electronics and computing to process and utilise these measurements.

As Product Manager, alongside developing electronics and software to increase the TRL of the customer system, I initiated a catalogue of the Intellectual Property created during development. This know-how and understanding of these signals have positioned GSS to maintain competitiveness during the development period of this technology. 

This product is now in use with the Thailand Government detecting counterfeit pharmaceutical products.

Proxisense Oil Debris - Product Manager

My role in this project was Product Management Lead, coordinating the User Experience, technical and commercial elements of the project.

Oxford University is world-class at conceiving, designing and developing world-class innovations. GSS has developed the electronics to drive a patented Thermal Product Sensor with multiple uses working with a senior professor within the Engineering Science Department. 

As Product Manager, my involvement in this project began with an in-depth customer workshop to understand the technical and user requirements.

GSS had developed a prototype set of electronics that managed the electrical power used to stimulate the Thermal Product Sensor, nominally at TRL 3-4

My involvement was to manage the interface of these electronics with a new piece of software. 

During the user workshops and interviews, I developed a comprehensive set of wireframes and subsequent User Interfaces using Sketch. 

Using the information gathered during the workshops, I developed a System Design.

Working with the Head of Software and Electronics, we developed the interface standards of these system elements, which the team then used to complete the low-level design work. 

An essential factor of the design was the ability to configure the system remotely. For this reason, a progressive web application became the clear choice as this unit was intended for and subsequently used in overseas trials.

Oxford University Thermal Product Sensor - Product Manager

My role on this project has been to develop the initial proposal, including technical and commercial aspects of the bid, including interfacing regularly with both engineering and commercial customer teams. The user interface and experience is well defined and already known and require minimal development. 

This system is an assembly of test equipment, compliant with STANAG 1553 and 3910/EFEX data standards, which can be used to test database signals on the target system.

In compliance with ISO9001, MIL-STD-498 and our internal QMS, I developed Tailor Engineering Management Plans, System Requirements Compliance Matrix, System Design, System Test, Qualification and Handover Plans. These were embodied within a project plan that included Agile elements, CE Testing and a critical path for essential components. This was backed up with a full costed DAREO which has been essential to managing supply chain issues bought around by silicon shortages due to COVID vaccine manufacturing.

BAE Systems LTEWP Databus Analyser

In the early stages of 2021, BAE Systems requested consultancy support to develop a post-flight analysis product. 

With a background in electronic warfare and product development, my role was to put together a 3-year programme that included design, development, integration, test, and qualification. 

As this was a military project, there were only two software iterations during this period, and it was delivered in a waterfall development style.

My role on this project was lead; I put together the application, coordinated all parties, and developed the system design with academic and industry partners.

Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful with this bid due to not securing the letter of support from our Industry Partner (Rolls Royce). However, this project was not insignificant, and as lead and product manager, several important lessons were learnt.  

Extract from the Case Study: 

This innovation is primarily focused on supporting the transition towards a net-zero economy, supporting the UK's power generation sector transition to sustainable power sources, whilst protecting the jobs of those employed in this sector through improved efficiency and subsequent emissions reduction, in particular reduced CO2 emissions.

This is achieved through a 10-20 times improvement of real-time Torque on the primary driveshaft of a power generation system.

The sensor and amplifier assembly acts as a mechanical amplifier by concentrating the shaft twist and strain over a short distance. Amplifying the pressure directly improves the signal-to-noise ratio, leading to greater accuracy in situations with low strain levels and in which noise levels are inhibiting. In some cases, the concept may even enable torque measurements that would otherwise not be possible.

The subject of this feasibility study, The Torque Measurement System, will be comprised of the following elements;

1) Shaft Mounted Novel Torque Sensor/Amplifier Assembly - IP originally developed using Private Venture funding at Oxford University using a stationary, wired prototype. Case Study Funded by GE Power.
2) Shaft Mounted Torque Measurement Electronics - IP originally developed at GSS Avionics Limited, including low energy Bluetooth
3) Casing Torque Measurement Electronics - IP originally developed at GSS Avionics Limited, including low energy Bluetooth processing and remote configuration.

This system will integrate with IoT devices.

Innovate UK Torque Measurement System - Product Manager

With a license from the government body, the DVSA, we developed a bespoke Theory Test App and whole business management system for UK Driving Instructors. 

Working with insurers, we have designed and developed an in-car hardware solution to collect data of learner drivers during the learning process.

Using this data we help the learner driver offset the cost of insurance with the time and effort they put into learning to drive, helping those who take the time to learn to drive well, reduce the cost of driving for the long term. 

The data profile is recorded on the blockchain, giving the learner driver lifetime access to their profile with no lockins to any platform. 

Additionally, we have partnered with first time car providers to help first time drivers get on the road faster than ever before, more affordably.

In Early 2014 I left the aerospace industry in search of a new challenge. 

I have been working throughout 2014 to develop a skill set that can only be found in a fast-paced, commercially dynamic and less technically restrained environment. 

The growth of these skills will determine the pace at which my personal and professional 5-year plans evolve.

Transitioning from Aerospace Engineering, specifically Electronic Warfare, into sales gave me a significant advantage. 

Being process-driven, I very quickly established the tool and techniques that were effective. 

I refined my sales process by batching enquiries, lead management, customer briefings and design consultations.

This resulted in me being the highest-grossing salesperson in the UK within my second month. 

Additionally, during this time, I became acquainted with the rejection of customers - a standard part of any sales position. 

This new skill allowed me to refine my focus and understanding of customer requirements. If people won't pay for it, you haven't fully understood their requirements.
