Oh, Mahalaya.
- Even the name feels like a heartbeat. ❤️ 

Growing up in Bengal in the mid-’80s & 90s, Mahalaya wasn’t a date on the calendar. It was a feeling. A ritual. A whole season announcing itself in whispers before the dhak got loud.

It meant waking up in the dark, not to alarms, but to that crackly transistor radio carrying Birendra Krishna Bhadra’s voice. Goosebumps every single time. 

My Dida would already be up, lamp lit before Maa Durga, her lips moving in prayer while the chants of Mahishasuramardini filled our little drawing room. 

Sleepy-eyed, we sat close, half listening, half feeling. That wasn’t just storytelling—it was a reminder that good always finds a way to rise.

Then came the tarpan. Baba and Kaka by the Water Bodies, pouring water for ancestors, stitching us into a lineage larger than ourselves. They came back with flowers and a quiet sense of peace that lingered in the house for the rest of the day.

And after that? The rush. 

The scent of new clothes freed from cupboards, last-minute tailors, whispered debates on pandal-hopping routes. 

Puja was never just about worship—it was art, reunion, food, music, laughter. It was our annual reset button.

Now, of course, the world looks different. 
The radio has become a YouTube link. 
Tarpan still happens, but often in quieter corners. 
Even pandal hopping has an app. The sarees share space with global fashion. 

Yet, the essence—the goosebumps, the anticipation, the sense that Maa is on her way—remains untouched.

What’s beautiful is how Mahalaya has traveled. Whether in New Jersey or Newtown, Bengalis recreate their own little corner of it. A tradition that stubbornly survives distance, time zones, and even the internet.

For me, Mahalaya is that bridge. From the slow magic of my mid ’80s childhood to the quick-click digital present. 

A reminder that roots don’t vanish—they adapt, they carry us forward, and they whisper, “She’s coming.”

✨ Maa Durga isn’t just arriving in pandals. She’s arriving in our memories, in our stories, in every little tradition we keep alive.

🔱 Durga Puja isn’t just a festival, it’s Bengal’s grassroots economy 🔱
Its a survival for many.

Every year, debates spark: “Donation? Charity? Vote bank politics?”

But here’s the truth — the Durga Puja grant is not charity, it’s livelihood for lakhs of people.

💰 It keeps alive the hands and hopes of:
🎎 Kumartuli idol artists
🛕 Bamboo & cloth artisans building pandals
🥁 Dhaakis whose year’s income depends on these days
🍟 Street vendors selling ghugni, fuchka, jilipi
💡 Lightmen, priests, sound engineers, event managers

📊 As the British Council revealed, Durga Puja drives a ₹32,000 crore creative economy, contributing 2.58% of Bengal’s GDP — a model even UNESCO recognized.

🌧️ But this year, we were reminded how fragile this ecosystem is. 

On the night of 22nd September, heavy rain soaked and destroyed half-finished idols in Kumartuli. 

Artists watched weeks of labour dissolve in mud, pandals missed deadlines, and hundreds of poor families saw their only income slip away.

This is why every rupee of support matters. One night of rain can shatter livelihoods. One timely grant can restore them.

So if you look at Puja grants only through the lens of politics, think again.
Durga Puja is Bengal’s Inclusive Development Model — where culture fuels economy, and tradition sustains livelihood.
