I’m Sara Fung, a career navigation expert and  RN with close to 20 years of experience in healthcare and leadership. I’m passionate about guiding healthcare professionals, from frontline nurses to senior leaders, toward careers that honor both their ambitions and their well-being.

Fun facts about my time as a nurse:

-I spent 8 years at the bedside in the world of maternal child health (L&D, NICU, postpartum)
-I then spent several years in nursing leadership positions such as clinical nurse specialist, professional practice specialist, and clinical educator
-I've held a number of non bedside nursing roles such as camp nurse, prenatal educator, research nurse, continuing education instructor
-I used to be a long distance runner and have run 2 half-marathons

We have enough issues in healthcare already.

The last thing we need is making the work harder for each other.

I'd rather just do the work and go home, you know?

Here's what I suggest for surviving "mean girls" at work:

1. Don’t take the bait. Their behavior says more about them than it does about you.

2. Find your allies. Even one supportive colleague can make all the difference.
Stay professional. Kill them with competence. Your work speaks louder than gossip.

3. Protect your peace. Take breaks, set boundaries, and don’t engage in negativity.

4. Use your voice. If things cross the line into bullying, document it and bring it forward.

Healthcare is already tough enough. Let’s choose to support each other instead of tearing each other down.

Staff nurses often feel like management hides in their offices all day.

Management, on the other hand, worries staff aren’t doing their jobs.

The truth? We’re all overworked and burning out.

We’re not on opposite sides. 
We’re on the same team.

And ultimately, we all want the best care for patients.

I can say this because I’ve spent equal time on the frontline and in leadership.

What we need most is understanding of each other’s challenges, pressures, and priorities.

It’s not us vs. them. It’s all of us, together.

I had to fire my hairdresser last year.

She no-showed for the 2nd time.

Gaslit me to convince me I had the appointment time wrong.

She was also often late, distracted and did not do a good job.

She didn't even call to say she was running late or apologize.

You might be wondering why I didn't leave sooner.

Honestly, it was a really good price.

I see this all the time in careers, too.

We stay in jobs that undervalue us because the “price” feels right.

Whether it’s the steady paycheck, the comfort of routine, or the fear of change.

But if the cost is your time, energy, and self-respect, it’s too expensive.

Sometimes the most empowering move you can make is to walk away, even if it means paying more or stepping into the unknown.

Your worth isn’t up for negotiation (and neither are your boundaries).

I've hung onto things way longer than I should have.

Months and even years.

Part of it was fear: how would it look on my resume if I left too soon?
Part of it was conditioning: I was taught you always finish what you start.
And part of it was the fear of missing out: what if things got better right after I left?

People always say to let go of what doesn’t serve you.
Sometimes, you have to take your own advice.
That doesn’t make it any easier, or less painful.

But once I had space to process what happened, I realized I didn’t actually miss any of it.

Except maybe the cafeteria food from two of the toxic jobs I stayed in too long.

I thought leaving meant I failed.

But what I learned is this:
It’s not failure, it’s growth.

It’s okay to be the underdog (or the undergiraffe, in this case).

Meet Wonkito the giraffe.

In 2019, he was photographed with a severe neck injury that displaced his vertebrae. Survival seemed unlikely.

The wounds were thought to be from either a lion attack or a fight with another male.

But Wonkito didn’t die.

He was spotted again recently, alive and thriving.

In fact, he may now be the dominant bull.

A crooked neck has been no barrier to his strength.

Because even if you’re a little bent, you’re far from broken.

Never underestimate the difference you make.

Patients used to reach out years later to thank me.

They were grateful for the impact I’d had on their lives.

When I left bedside, I worried I might lose that kind of appreciation.

But the other day, I woke up to this message from a nurse I helped:

"During one of the lowest points in my career, Sara took the time to talk with me. She offered thoughtful advice that I still carry with me and plan to implement once I complete my dissertation. 

More importantly, she guided me through a period of depression, encouraging me to stand back up, move forward, and pursue another opportunity despite what had happened with my previous job."

I had no idea this person was struggling like that three years ago.

But I’m so glad I went above and beyond.

Today, nurses are my patients.

And I couldn’t be prouder to support them.
