I used to work in a boring old corporate job, but at 23 I decided to ditch that life and follow my dream of working in startups. Here's how I survive in this crazy world:

➡️ I have a job. Yeah, I know some people think they're boring, but I see it as an opportunity to learn and experiment with someone else's money (and then get paid for it every month). Sounds pretty good to me!

➡️ I help out fledgling startups by showing them how to scale without any cash. Sounds interesting, right? I've made a ton of mistakes in my own startups, so I know what it takes to succeed in this world without money. Don't worry, I'm no guru (not even Asaram could claim that title).

➡️ I give trainings on public speaking, team building, digital marketing, influencer marketing, performance marketing, and social media marketing to both college students and corporate types. Some of the places I've worked with include SRCC, CVS, Ramjas, and Siemens Ltd.

➡️ I love hosting events and entertaining people. Whether it's a talk show or just a group of people who want to have some fun, I'm always up for it. I've even hosted stand-up comedians like Anshu Mor and Sumit Saurav.

Here’s why the role of a Brand Manager is one of the hardest in enterprises:

- They have to meet deadlines for social media, performance copies, and brand deliverables.
- Most of the time, there are budget constraints, and almost everything requires multiple approvals.
- They have very little control over execution because agencies are often pre-selected, and they simply have to work with what’s assigned to them.

When I was leading the vertical in my previous roles, I don’t think I did a great job maintaining relationships with so many stakeholders, and I genuinely admire everyone who does it well.

I realised my strength lies in execution, which is why I moved to the agency side. Tough, but rewarding.

But my respect for the people who are able to execute consistently is endless.

Top things a Brand Manager actually does (in any organisation)

(For early-stage marketers, founders, or marketing heads trying to divide responsibilities)

1.  Getting ad copies for performance marketing
 If I’m being honest almost 70% of performance marketing is just great ad copies. If the copy is  done with the right influencer/celebrity is aligned… the job is half done.

2. Manage the social content calendar
 Planning what goes live every day, coordinating with writers, designers, and video teams, and ensuring consistent content execution.

3. Build brand campaigns (big or small)
 Selecting agencies, briefing them, and executing campaigns around key moments like Christmas, Independence Day, or larger events like IPL.

4. Handle ad-hoc video requirements
 Whenever a product launches or a feature drops, a brand manager plans the campaign assets, videos, and supporting collaterals.

5. Run influencer marketing for organic reach
 Collaborating with agencies or directly with creators to drive visibility, reviews, and conversation around the brand.

6. Identify and invest in the right IPs
 Finding platforms, partnerships, shows, or cultural moments that help the brand scale and deepen recall.

My 10 years in the content industry have taught me one thing.

Brands forget almost everything:

- how rude you were
- how much you argued
- how much you charged
- how delayed you were

But they never forget the content you deliver.

If the content is iconic, you’ll always be safe and so will your career.

- Access to the latest info about influencers and IP. Almost everyone is aware of creator ads and they are experimenting more than Bangalore and Mumbai startups. Budgets are already being planned for Christmas and beyond.


- Strong interest in building IPs. They want to understand and grow non-brand pages. Budgets are available and they are exploring better partners.


- Very high ROI mindset. Clear shift toward micro creators and using IPs to drive views. They know exactly what they are doing.

Sometimes I genuinely feel bad for a lot of Instagram creators who miss out on great deals just because:

- their manager carries too much attitude,
-doesn’t understand the technicalities of a deal,
- is too young to value relationships,
- thinks the other party is stupid,
- or quotes random numbers just for the sake of it.

While I haven’t worked in talent management myself, the good managers I have dealt with usually:

- are flexible and open to discussion,
- keep pitching new ideas for their creators,
- think from the POV of strengthening deals,
- understand that if the content performs, more deals automatically flow in.


What do you think!

A few observations I’ve had over time in marketing:

- The more unprofitable the startup, the higher the ego of the brand manager.

- In many D2C startups, “brand marketers” are actually just performance marketers with better titles.

- Every once in a while, there’s a marketing fad to look cool currently trending: calling performance marketing “perf”. 🙃

- Everyone is experimenting, and no one really knows what’s working. Not even the marketing head who is extremely active on LinkedIn.

2. Gamma – I don’t use it extensively, but it’s great for making fast proposals.

4. Claude – Sometimes helpful for scripts.

5. Professional Gmail + 1 TB Drive – The best investment for a content business.

6. Sales Navigator – I used to love Maimodo, but I want to do things manually for now. Nothing too heavy on cost.
