- Responsible for monthly GL close for revenue, deferred revenue, and unbilled revenue accounts
- Designed and implemented a go-live notification process that has led to more accurate revenue recognition

- Managed audit and review engagements for private and not-for-profit entities with multi-state and international operations and revenues of up to $300 million annually
- Researched GAAP topics and wrote technical memos; advised clients about the appropriate application of GAAP for various topics including as revenue recognition, discontinued operations, and stock appreciation rights
- Led a team that developed industry-specific applications of IDEA data extraction software for the firm’s major industry groups
- Co-authored training manuals and policy documents for the firm’s use of data extraction software and taught staff training courses
- Developed and helped implement firm-wide policies and procedures for the use of audit software during the transition to a less-paper environment in the Jacksonville office

- Prepared and analyzed monthly financial models for commercial real estate development projects in the Southeastern United States

As a CPA, I’ve spent over 20 years serving in leadership roles in public accounting firms and in the corporate accounting and finance world. "Am I seeking God's kingdom, or my own?"


As faith-driven business owners and entrepreneurs, I think we would all say, "I'm seeking God's kingdom...I'm doing this for His glory" in alignment with Matthew 6:33.  I definitely would say this about my own business.  

But I wonder if we sometimes seek to do good according to God because we care about the way it reflects on us and because we want the promise that comes at the end of that verse ("...all these things will be added to you as well").

That's the idea that Obie McKenzie articulates in the book "Faith Driven Investing".  I recently joined a foundation course for Faith Driven Investor and it's really been challenging and convicting me about my perspectives on faith and money.

Obie makes the point that "if we're seeking the Kingdom of God solely because we want the benefit on the back end, then we're not really seeking the Kingdom of God in the first place.  We're seeking our own kingdom in disguise."  Ouch.

I realized that I've been guilty of this.  Seeking God's Kingdom, doing His work, because "all these things will be added."  Secretly hoping that if I do things God's way then He'll do me a solid and bless my business, giving me the safety and security that I crave.  After all, I'm doing God's work, so why wouldn't He bless me?

But we have to reach a place where we are seeking God's kingdom first simply because that's what He called us to do and He owns it all anyway, understanding that "all these things" that will be added don't necessarily equate to earthly financial success.  

I'll confess that I'm a work in progress, but it's my earnest prayer that He'll help me to seek first His Kingdom not for my own gain, but for the sake of seeing how God works in the hearts and minds of this world as He builds His kingdom.

This past weekend I got to watch my son and his cross country team compete in the Georgia state championship for their athletic conference.


It was an awesome experience for him as a freshman, and there were so many teachable moments.

He ran a solid race, but he didn't achieve his individual time goal.  He finished as the number 5 runner on his team.  They had a good shot a winning it all, but in the end they came up just a few points short and finished in 3rd place.  

Because he was their last runner to score for their team, my son took it hard.  He felt like it was his fault for not finishing higher in the standings, which might have meant the difference between 3rd place and 1st place.

We spent a lot of time talking about the season and how much progress he's made.  He started training in May, and he's put in more work and shown more dedication than I thought he would.  I reminded him of how much progress he's made since May, how much he's improved, and how much faster he has become.  And I reminded him that he's only a freshman, competing against sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

There were a few specific takeaways that I think are applicable to sports, as well as life and business:

1. All you can do is your very best.  Sometimes our best is enough to achieve a goal, but sometimes is isn't.  And that's ok.

2. Sometimes we feel discouraged in the moment because it feels like we're not making progress.  In those moments, we need to reflect on our past progress because it can help to reframe our perspective.

3. Growth takes time.  It's not a sprint, it's a marathon (or in this case, a 5K).  TV, social media, and culture tell us that you can and should be an "overnight" success.  The truth is that growth and progress take time.  

I hope this encourages someone today.  It's far easier to feel discouraged  than it is to feel encouraged by growth.  But at the end of the day, we have to remember why we're running the race in the first place, and we must remember Who is handing out the prizes.  Hebrews 12:1-2
