Oversee Avalara's web marketing presence and inbound lead generation. Deploy a comprehensive strategy for user experience, conversion optimization, SEO, link building campaigns, online advertising, social media and content creation.

Created InsideOut's Department of Online Marketing. Led a team that managed online marketing for more than 150 clients, including web brand management, search engine optimization, pay per click marketing, analytics and conversion tracking. Other duties included designing and launching new products, conducting trainings and public events, and developing ecommerce websites. 

As product owner for inndx.com, I designed and launched a platform-as-a-service PaaS with a subscription model for the travel industry based on WordPress.

I'm not sure more "traditional" enterprises realize the opportunity they have currently. The market is filled with qualified people. Many of those people aren't interested in working at roller coaster tech companies. They are actively seeking out more supportive, less dogmatic, and more mission-oriented environments. 

The changes required to foster supportive environments for these people—a bit more autonomy, and empowerment—aren't major in the grand scheme of things. Totally doable.

It is an incredible opportunity to set in motion a decade of great work.

Over the weekend, Tobi, the founder and CEO of Shopify, discussed the major reason investors passed on Shopify in the early days : market size.

I remember that financing round, & I remember having the same concern, & making the same mistake. Living in the valley & driving on 101, the billboards & logo-adorned headquarters of successful companies provide a daily infusion of all the mistakes in I’ve made in guessing how a company or a market might evolve.

Years later, I listened as Bill Gurley shared his thoughts about market size. He asked himself a question : whether the startup was increasing, decreasing, or maintaining the market size? (I can’t seem to find the link - but I have it in my notes!)

I added that question to my diligence list when meeting startups.

Now much later, having seen many companies create categories or reinvigorate aging ones, the question I ask myself has evolved.

It’s not as the market size large enough? Instead, it the question is : do we believe this company can create the market?

Market size is the output of all the players marketing, selling, building. Their efforts alter, distort, & juice the supply/demand curves of macroeconomics. It’s not a given - not an output or a steady-state CAGR.

Often it’s the startups that engender the demand, change the market dynamics, & make markets massive by taking risks with products.

When done right, these founders create category-defining businesses like Shopify (now worth $90b)!

Only ~5% of B2B Software companies are hiring RevOps roles.
 
But the salaries are quite high…
 
Based on open jobs in PeerSignal's B2B Software Index, 12% are $200K+, 35% are $150K+. There are a handful around $350K.
 
i.e. Demand skews toward senior talent.
 
Here are a few examples:
 
* Matillion -- Vice President, Revenue Operations ($230-285K)
* Rippling -- Sales Strategy Senior Manager ($126-220K)
* Endor Labs -- Director of Revenue Operations ($150-215K)
* Modern Health -- Director of Revenue Operations ($190-248K)
* Docker, Inc -- VP, Revenue Operations ($206-258K)
* Miro -- Senior Manager, Sales Strategy and Operations ($188-247K)
 
If you're looking for an entry level role in RevOps, it might take some patience to break-in...
 
But there seems to be lots of upside.
 
And I'd bet that RevOps becomes increasingly important in the next couple years.
 
Smart companies already value the function.
 
With more AI and automation coming, we're going to need strategists and operators. Someone will need to orchestrate and coordinate. There's no real "easy button."
 
I see that kind of talent sitting in Growth and RevOps for the most part.

VCs tell founders "Be a pain pill, not a vitamin." 🙃

Pain pills treat symptoms. Vitamins cure diseases. Fatal, incredibly painful, disfiguring diseases. Like rickets. And beriberi. And scurvy. 

Oh, and the supplements industry is about four times the size of the pain relief industry in the US ($135 Billion vs $32 Billion). So yes, you can make money selling vitamins.

There are reasons for not having transparent SaaS pricing. 

But none of those reasons are good for the customer.

Mark your calendar, May 5 is the new spam deadline from Google.

We've all been focused on Google's new email spam policies, but they also rolled out a Core update for Search. This is a larger than usual update, which took multiple weeks to roll out.

Using AI (or any other automation) to generate pages for search ranking is against their spam policy and can get you removed from rankings, starting on May 5. 

Since automated content abuse has long been against their spam policies, my guess is that they're rolling out new mechanisms for identifying low-quality AI-generated pages. 

It is against the guidelines for Google Workspace for a company to send email to email addresses purchased from other companies. 

It is also against the guidelines to send email to parties who haven’t opted in. 

My guess is that about 90% of Google Workspace customers are violating these guidelines, and risk being shut off from sending email to personal Gmail users. Thoughts?

Did you have Microsoft on your bingo card as Google’s first major target? 

Some Microsoft users were impacted this week by Google’s new Gmail spam protection protocol. 

A handful of Outlook.com domains were flagged as having bulk email sender status, with spam abuse rates above the threshold. This resulted in rejected messages to Gmail users. 

This is just one of the stories of impact from the first week of Google’s more stringent approach.
