A 7.5 earthquake hit Taiwan yesterday  and footage shows the Taipei 101 skyscraper shaking. 

The 1,670ft building famously has a 703 ton steel ball hanging between the 88th and 92nd floors, which acts as a “dampener system” to reduce building sway by 30-40% during earthquakes and typhoons.

This video explains how the system acts like a pendulum to prevent structural damage.

The engineering marvel is a passive dampening system, which means it doesn’t require an outside power source but is “powered by natural movement of the building.”

He was enjoying a meal at a restaurant when a man interrupted him, handed him a napkin and asked:

“Could you sketch something for me? I’ll pay. Name your price.”

Picasso took the napkin, pulled a charcoal pencil from his pocket and started sketching. Using only a few strokes, he drew a goat that was unmistakably a Picasso. He held it up for the man to see.

The man smiled and reached to take the sketch. But Picasso withheld it.

“That will be $100,000.” Picasso said.

The man was astonished. “$100,000?! You drew that in 30 seconds!”

Picasso crumpled up the napkin and stuffed it in his pocket.

“You're wrong.” he said.

“It's taken me 40 years to do that.”

This is wild! Google has paid Apple an estimated $120 billion since 2010 to be the default search engine on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac 😳

According to Goldman Sachs research, around $20 billion was paid last year alone.

To put this into perspective, in 2023:

- Google's payment was roughly 60% more than Microsoft's total ad revenue
- Google's payment covered 75% of Apple's Research & Development budget

Google is essentially funding all of Apple's R&D, and we should put it on every device.

Boston Dynamics has once again reinvented itself. It took my brain a while to parse what's going on in this video. We are so obsessed with "human-level" robotics that we forget it is just an artificial ceiling. Why don't we make a new species superhuman from day one? 

I am optimistic that humanoid robots will exceed the supply of iPhones in the next decade, freeing us from all kinds of undesirable or unsafe physical work. Gradually, then suddenly.

Why is biking part of the circular economy?

I get this question frequently. This picture (see comment for details) explains it visually:

⚖ A bike is much lighter than a car - way less materials used to produce and maintain
🛢 A bike is powered by humans, not fossil fuels, so again less material use
🛣 A bike uses way less space, resulting in less materials such as concrete, steel and asphalt for roads and parking

In addition, biking, walking and public transport is so much more efficient allowing for much more compact cities. And guess what - you don't need a car in a compact city. These cities can be designed with a much lower carbon and biodiversity footprint.

The beautiful and old city of Amsterdam, for instance, would be completely congested if everybody would use cars to get around.

Choices made in transportation has a ripple effect on urban design.

U.S. Economy: 

"In spite of the unsettling landscape, including last year’s regional bank turmoil, the U.S. economy continues to be resilient, with consumers still spending, and the markets currently expect a soft landing. 

It is important to note that the economy is being fueled by large amounts of government deficit spending and past stimulus"

Soft-Landing: 

"Equity values, by most measures, are at the high end of the valuation range, and credit spreads are extremely tight. 

These markets seem to be pricing in at a 70% to 80% chance of a soft landing — modest growth along with declining inflation and interest rates. 

I believe the odds are a lot lower than that."

AI: 

"We are completely convinced the consequences will be extraordinary and possibly as transformational as some of the major technological inventions of the past several hundred years: 

Think the printing press, the steam engine, electricity, computing and the Internet, among others."

"Over time, we anticipate that our use of AI has the potential to augment virtually every job"

We produce 2.3 billion tonnes of trash every year. Only 19% gets recycled or composted. Here's how to turn that around:

Waste is a global issue, but with vast cultural differences: 

The average American produces 2.2 kg of trash/day.
Average Dutch = 1.7 kg
Average Ind = 0.57 kg
Average Chinese = 0.43 kg

Here are the top 5 strategies for less waste, no matter where you are: 

1. REDUCE:
Get only what you really need. Even if it's free, but you don't need it, don't get it.

2. REUSE
Reuse packaging, clothes, and furniture all the way to rechargeable batteries.

3. REFILL
Get refillable coffee cups, water bottles, soap dispensers, toners, or even lighters.

4. REPAIR
If it breaks, don't throw it away. Fix your clothes, IT, furniture, cars, you name it.

5. RECYCLE
If you can't do 1-4, bring it to a recycling bin. It's not a panacea, but it'll do. 
 
And remember - the best waste is no waste!

2024: Instagram generates ~$1 billion in ad revenue every week 🤯

To put this into perspective, YouTube made $31.5B in revenue in 2023 growing only 1.3% YoY (and likely at much lower gross margins).

Instagram is the greatest acquisition in tech history.

Breaking: The Ocean Cleanup made their largest catch ever!

This gives me hope.

What started as a dream of a 16-year-old Boyan Slat turned into a team of 120 people in 30 countries, that keeps inspiring the world.

We have to clean up our mess.

If we don't act, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

To stop trashing our planet, follow the 5Rs:

1. REDUCE
2. REUSE
3. REFILL
4. REPAIR
5. RECYCLE

But remember: We can only do as much, as people.

The bigger part of the problem is systemic. It's the companies that are really responsible.

Bye-bye, single-use plastics 👋 

EU's crackdown is coming by 2030! 

We produced 238 million tons of single-use plastic packaging in 2023. 

Only 14% got recycled.

If we don't act, there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050. 

EU is taking strong measures to turn the tide on plastic pollution: 

1. Cut the overall amount of packaging by 15% by 2040 

2. Ban "forever chemicals" from packaging 

3. Ban non-recyclable, single-use times for: 
- fresh fruits and vegetables 
- food eaten in cafes and restaurants 
- toiletries in hotels, and more...

4. Collect 90% of plastic bottles by 2029
- with the help of deposit refund schemes 

5. Recycling target of 70% of all types of packaging by 2030.  

This is a step in the right direction! 

Other countries should follow ASAP.

This is Morris Chang: the man who turned 55 and then founded the world's most important company that today keeps the tech industry running 😳

Morris's story is fascinating.

The founder, as well as former chairman & CEO, of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), is a brilliant illustration of how experience, insight, and perfect timing can trump youth in entrepreneurial success.

Let's break it down.

Chang already had a storied 30-year career at companies like Texas Instruments when he moved to Taiwan in 1985. The government tapped him to develop the island's tech capabilities.

But Chang had a much bigger vision.

Seeing both the rise of fabless chip design firms and Taiwan's untapped manufacturing potential, Chang conceived of a pure-play chip foundry, focused solely on manufacturing chips for clients vs. designing its own.

Everyone thought he was crazy. "Real men have fabs" was the industry thinking. 

But Chang's insight proved prophetic.

By being a neutral partner focused only on manufacturing, TSMC could serve the whole industry. As chips became unimaginably complex, this model enabled clients to offload the increasingly difficult task of actually making them.

And so TSMC started off humbly in 1987, housed in a leaky warehouse.

But with Chang's leadership and TSMC's flawless execution, the company achieved technical feats no one thought possible. Apple, Nvidia, Qualcomm - they all beat a path to its door.

Today, TSMC is one of the world's most valuable companies with a market cap of over $730B.

Over the past five years, the company’s value has nearly quadrupled, and the roughly 0.5% stake in TSMC that Chang owns is now worth about $3.5 billion. 

But here comes the crazy part.

TSMC today operates at an almost incomprehensible scale.

A single TSMC fab can churn out over a quintillion transistors, which is more than all goods ever produced in human history 🤯

And it all started with 55-year-old Morris Chang who was willing to bet it all on a crazy idea.

Age is just a number, especially in entrepreneurship.

Tipping Point?

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." (W S Churchill)

Today might be the tipping point in the Russo/Ukraine war. The US House of representatives voted for the 61 billion dollar aid package to Ukraine, the deal must now be signed off by the Senate and the President. 

This decision is akin to Churchill's reaction when Adolf Hitler declared war on the USA in 1941. Churchill wrote in his memoirs that only then could he be completely sure the allies would win. 

Now at last, we can we be certain Ukraine will win. With the USA, NATO, the UK, Europe and most of the UN supporting them Ukraine cannot lose. Russia, cannot sell or transport a large portion of its oil and gas, cannot refine its crude, cannot function on the world banking system, has a currency that is coinsidered worthless, climbing inflation and an army that is running out of men and materiel. 

Russia hoped to wear Ukraine down and coerced proxies in various governments across the world to enable that strategy. The most important of all being the USA. Russia has failed because the moderate Republicans in Congress finally overwhelmed the extremists they refer to privately as 'The Crazies'. This important stance was combined with the sound and solid bipartisan approach of Democrats. This is the way democracies are supposed to function. United in the aim to do what is decent and best for the free world, not what is best for their wallets. 

Perhaps one advantage that has come from the USA procrastinating is that it has forced the rest of the world (especially the UK) to realise how inadequate their armed forces are? Our dependency on the USA for defence must be measured by our ability to defend ourselves standing alone as we did in the South Atlantic in 1982.

Billions more from the UK, Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil and many others.

More Patriot air defences from Europe, 
More Drones, ammunition, food, fuel and medical care.

The one thing Ukraine has not yet asked us for is our men. We might have to reconsider our position in that regard in the coming months if we are to ensure that Putin comes to the negotiation table and agrees to take his armies home.

Ultimately from all this, there is an old lesson for our leaders to learn again. 

To prevent a war one must always be prepared for one!
