After college, I had 2 full time jobs - both in huge companies. I became tired of the corporate bureaucracy. So I left and tried a small family business. I was promoted 2 times in my first 2 months and landed as third in charge of the entire organization. Within 6 months, I had turned the business around and they saw their first profit in 3 years. I wrote SOP's for all roles and created KPI's for all departments. It was the first time in my life I saw a clear path to success. However, this isn't a happy story. The owner is unkind and unintelligent. After getting yelled at everyday for 2 years, I had enough. But what I learned was the right and wrong way to run a business, to treat your employees, and grow as a company and a person. During that crazy time of my life, I was working 50 hours a week and taking work home on the weekends. I was reminded of what's important when my super wife had our son. I joined a business consulting network and created my own company. Now I help small and medium size businesses make more money while working less hours. My super wife had another son and we continue to argue about getting a cat. But what we do agree on is that family is tremendously important and we all have the potential to succeed.

Even though time was of the essence, as the United States was losing the American Revolutionary War and desperately needed Frances's help right away...         "The Pain of Progress" I learned this from my physical therapist for my knee. So you get injured - knee, elbow, wrist, whatever it is. You start using it again. Many patients in physical therapy try to work on their ailment. But when it hurts again, they take a break. Then they try again until it hurts, then they stop again. This goes on until they completely give up. They stop trying. My physical therapist told me I will have dips in my progress and feel pain, but if I stop all together, my injury will never improve. Just like a patient in physical therapy who pushes through pain only to face setbacks and discouragement, business owners often hit roadblocks that make them want to give up. Each dip feels like failure, but it's just the pain of progress. Don’t quit on your business.           Don't cancel on your kids. I got some great advice from Tom Kavanaugh, MA this week. And it really resonated with me because I have 2 young kids. If you made a commitment to your child's basketball game or band concert, you need to honor that. Because if you break that promise, you are saying to your kid that work is more valuable than them. And the next time they have a thing, they won't believe you when you promise to come. I get it — as an entrepreneur / business owner, we feel obligated to our customers. We feel we could lose a client if we postpone a meeting. And we can argue in our heads that we are doing it for our families - to provide for them. But little kids don't understand that. And they won’t stay little forever. If you told them you’d be there — be there. Honor the commitments that matter most. #WorkLifeBalance #ParentingMatters #FamilyFirst #NoRegrets #entrepreneurlife
