I grow online marketplaces. And now I'm almost exclusively growing ESG-related marketplaces. Growing marketplaces is something I seemed to be OK at, so about a decade ago, I decided that's what I wanted to specialise in, and it's managed to keep me off the streets ever since, having advised, consulted, HoG'd, CGO'd and CMO'd for a bunch of online marketplaces in Oz, the US and the UK ever since. 2024 has been somewhat of a 'discovery' year for me, as I have delved into the realms of ESG and climate, etc ... from starting the year somewhat curious, then delving into the scene, annoying people already involved, milking them for every bit of knowledge I could extract, then realising the sheer enormity of the movement/ industry and the challenge at hand, to retreating a little to now deciding I'm throwing myself fully into this thing, it's been an interesting progression. So yeah, having unexpectedly spent 2024 back in Australia after a decade in London, and seeing this amazing country kind of sleepwalking to an uncertain post-fossil fuel future while the population remains drugged out on exorbitant property prices, as I bound between bewilderment, disappointment, and straight out anger, I decided I wanted to do something. So, I decided, after trying to work out how I can make a difference, that I 'stick to my knitting' and focus on both helping online marketplaces in the ESG space to grow (there are plenty sprouting up to try to resolve some pretty chronic market inefficiencies), while helping existing online marketplaces with their sustainability strategies. I'm also keen to help the accounting profession, particularly at the SME Accounting firm level, maintain their relevancy in light of Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions reporting.
