It's a reminder that every operation — from factory floors to control rooms — relies on backbones that can quietly fail.

When one link breaks, everything that depends on it slows, stops, or scrambles.

Sometimes it’s a server.
Sometimes it’s a supplier.
Sometimes it’s the one person who knows how the system actually works.

This week’s post isn’t about the cloud.

It’s about fragility — and the invisible dependencies that make or break performance when pressure hits.

When a system breaks, ops feels it first

The other day, I hosted a workshop for one of our clients.
And I brought a small experiment.

I built a simple app in Replit and held a kind of “SOP sprint.”
 
Here’s how it worked:
Each participant clicked a button to start a voice interview.
They answered a few questions about a process they knew by heart.
The app turned their answers into a neatly formatted SOP in Word —
then uploaded it right back into the workspace.
 
We ran it like a game: one hour on the clock.
A live leaderboard showed how many SOPs each person had created.
Most SOPs written = a bottle of champagne.
 
What happened next surprised me.

The room got loud. Competitive.
People were cheering each other on.
Processes that had been “too busy to document”
suddenly found their way into clean, living files.
 
In sixty minutes, they built more collective memory
than some teams produce in months.
 
It made me wonder:
What if documentation doesn’t need to feel like admin?
What if the key is to make it participatory — even fun?
 
I’m still thinking about it,
but it felt like a glimpse into something different:
how documentation can shift from static to active
when people are genuinely part of it.
