Here are my key takeaways from the MBA I finished in 2023: ✅ In our globalized world, we have to deal with a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) reality. ✅ Every organization must understand and manage competing stakeholder interests. ✅ Use quantitative and qualitative data for both lagging and leading indicators of success. ✅ Every organization has limited resources so must make strategic trade offs. Pick yours. ✅ A marketing plan isn’t about advertising or sales. It’s fundamentally about how you create value. ✅ Understand your sources of value creation and competitive advantage. ✅ You better be thinking about sustainability. ✅ Corporate social responsibility is hot because profit is no longer the reason business exists. There is too much at stake to allow businesses to destroy the environment and be predatorial in their dealings with employees, customers, suppliers, their communities, etc. ✅ Use frameworks to help you make sense of your internal and external environment so you can make strategic decisions (e.g. Porter’s Five Forces, supply chain mapping, VRIO, balanced scorecards). ✅ Supply chain mapping can help you understand competitive forces in your chosen industry. Businesses that participate in circular supply chain techniques like removing and repurposing waste are the businesses of the future. My personal conclusion is that the best leader pays attention to the 4 P’s: 🔥 People 🔥 Processes 🔥 Performance 🔥 Planning As Eric Ries shares in Lean Startup, pay attention to the 3 I’s: iterate, innovate, and improve. Those are fundamental business skills.
