We've officially bootstrapped to $5M ARR. I feel like I'm dreaming.

A year ago, our team had 3 people. Today, we have these 17 beautiful faces on the Alia team 😻

I'm 24 yrs old. 

This is how it feels to have a team of this size at my age👇🏽

The decisions my cofounders and I make now affect whether someone can pay rent next month. 

And that's a weight I never expected when I started this company. 

If we happen to have a bad month, I can’t just worry about the business

The hardest part isn't managing the work anymore, it's managing the guilt if things go wrong. 

Because at the end of the day, I'm 24 years old and these people trust me with their livelihoods. 

When I wake up every morning, I'm not just thinking about hitting our revenue goals anymore. 

I'm thinking about the people who are counting on me. 

Some days I wonder if I'm even cut out for this responsibility. 

But, to me, it's both incredibly terrifying and incredibly motivating.

We were offered $150K in funding (when we had $0 in rev)

Why we turned it down👇🏽

So initially we tried to raise money from VCs and couldn't get it

Then we decided to do an angel round with friends and family instead

We raised the $150K, had all the contracts signed, and they were about to send the money

But right before we took it, my co-founder and I asked ourselves one simple question

"What do we actually need this money for?"

We wanted to post on LinkedIn and Twitter that we just raised $150K

It was literally to make a vanity post on LinkedIn and Twitter 😭 

So when we dug deeper, we realized money wouldn’t solve our real problems

Could money get us more traction? Maybe but probably not.
Could money make us more experienced? Definitely not.
Could money make people actually like our product? No.

So we stepped back and said let's exhaust every free growth channel first

Two years later, we're at $5M ARR and don't need anyone's money

We kept 100% of our equity and built exactly what we wanted

The takeaways:

- Always ask yourself why you really want to raise money

- Don’t just raise it simply because you see everyone else doing it
