As the Director of Sales for Marriott, Summit Watch Park City, I was responsible for Marriott’s sales revenue, customer experience, recruiting and training for all sales and marketing personnel. Among my major achievements at Marriott, my co-manager and I led our sales team to become the number one resort in the Marriott organization, and we were labeled as “The Most Successful Ownership resort in the World.”

By creating a new-hire training curriculum, which was used company wide, I became the highest-ranked female in all of Marriott’s ownership/real estate division. 

Some of my other notable accomplishments include: 

💯 Monitored the daily, weekly and monthly KPI’s that led to breaking a world record in the resort/hospitality industry. Named #1 ownership resort in the world by Vacation Ownership World Magazine. 

💯 Worked closely with management to develop innovative marketing programs, which included: customer enhancement seminars, prospecting strategies, increasing referrals from key accounts by over 76%, and the development and implementation of loyalty programs to ensure customer experience.

What are the three most important things in your life?

Go ahead. Name them.

Most reps I ask say things like:
❤️ Family
🥗 Health
🧘 Spirituality
✈️ Travel

Not one has ever said:
📈 Increasing stakeholder value
📑 Document management software
👉 [Insert your product or business outcome here]

So if it’s not a priority in your life…
why would it be a priority in your buyer’s?

You can’t change someone’s priorities in a 30-minute call.

But you can ask the kind of questions that reveal what really matters to them, then show how your solution helps protect it, fuel it, or unlock more of it.

That’s what real connection looks like.
And it’s what the future of selling has to be.

You’ve seen it.

Try this instead:

The other gets emotion.

And emotion is what moves deals forward.

Most sales training is a quadruple bypass for a headache.

A trainer takes a course on negotiation, so they build a module around it.

It’s SKO season. The theme is “Customer First” so the keynote focuses on empathy.

But what if that’s not the real issue?

We’ve all been trapped in that demo —
26 slides, zero oxygen.

The rep’s rushing, clicking, filling every second like silence is a threat.
“I’ve got 30 minutes. Let me power through this deck so I can finally ask, ‘Any questions?’”

Trust me — fewer slides will take you further.
Park the extras at the end.
Nobody buys because you squeezed in every product detail.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got?
“Never answer a question the customer didn’t ask.”

You don’t need to say everything.
But you do need to ask something.

Because sales isn’t a monologue.
It’s a dialogue.
And the more you talk, the longer your deal drags.

There’s a study from Primary Intelligence that backs this up:
When buyers say no, the top reason isn’t price or timing.

It’s: “The seller didn’t uncover my needs.”

Translation?
They didn’t ask.
They didn’t listen.
They didn’t pause.

When people feel heard, they lean in — 
and that’s when the conversation turns into a connection.

I see it all the time.
Well-meaning managers doing what I call a drive-by s#itting.

You know the move:
“Hey, why’d we miss the number?”
“Hey, your forecast is off.”

Quick hit. No context. No coaching.
Just a little stink left behind.

And it’s not because they don’t care.
It’s because they were never coached on how to coach.

Good intentions don’t drive revenue.
Repeatable systems do.

If you want your managers to inspire real behavior change — not just rehash the pipeline — they need:
✅ A structure for feedback
✅ A rhythm for rep development
✅ A way to measure what’s working

Otherwise, “coaching” becomes another meeting.
And your reps stay stuck.

Better coaching builds confidence.
Confidence drives performance.
Performance sustains culture.

Most salespeople focus on the stories they tell buyers.
But the story that can make or break a deal might be the one you tell yourself.

A meeting gets canceled.
A client doesn’t reply to your email.
And suddenly, your brain fills in the blanks:

“They’ve gone with a competitor.”
“They didn’t like the demo.”
“They didn’t like me.”

Here’s how I reset the conversation before the story in my head wrecks the relationship:

1️⃣ Lead with intent: “I want to clear something up.”
2️⃣ Name the facts: “You said this. I said this…”
3️⃣ Say the story: “I’m telling myself a story that... Is this true?”

Then, let them speak.

In my experience, 9 times out of 10, the story I was telling myself was wrong.

Great sellers don’t let stories sabotage trust.
They stay curious, clear, and connected.

Remember: anything that can be told can be asked.

Forecast reviews this time of year always sound the same:

Pop Quiz: Why is face-to-face selling more effective than virtual?

1️⃣ You can buy the customer a steak.
2️⃣ You can smell them.
3️⃣ You can read their body language.
4️⃣ You can meet other decision-makers in the hallway.

Answer: Number two. 😳

Yep — it’s science.

When we’re physically near someone, our brains release oxytocin, the trust-and-bonding hormone. It’s what helps us decide, “I like you. I’ll buy from you.”

Research even shows when people are given oxytocin (via nasal spray), they don’t just trust more, they spend more.

Now, before you start adding nasal spray to your prospecting kit, remember:
If you can get someone to put something up their nose, they already trust you. 😉

The closer the connection, the stronger the trust.
And when face-to-face isn’t possible, the next best thing is dialogue over monologue.

Because not all sales activities are created equal — some just check boxes.
Others build relationships.
