As the Director of Sales for Marriott, Summit Watch Park City, I was responsible for Marriott’s sales revenue, customer experience, recruiting and training for all sales and marketing personnel. Among my major achievements at Marriott, my co-manager and I led our sales team to become the number one resort in the Marriott organization, and we were labeled as “The Most Successful Ownership resort in the World.”

By creating a new-hire training curriculum, which was used company wide, I became the highest-ranked female in all of Marriott’s ownership/real estate division. 

Some of my other notable accomplishments include: 

💯 Monitored the daily, weekly and monthly KPI’s that led to breaking a world record in the resort/hospitality industry. Named #1 ownership resort in the world by Vacation Ownership World Magazine. 

💯 Worked closely with management to develop innovative marketing programs, which included: customer enhancement seminars, prospecting strategies, increasing referrals from key accounts by over 76%, and the development and implementation of loyalty programs to ensure customer experience.

In over 6 decades our family has never missed celebrating Passover together.This year was no exception.As I prepared the "charoset' and matzo ball soup, I couldn't help but feel grateful. It's not every day that a woman my age is blessed with  both parents, let alone healthy and vibrant ones. The next day they would travel from Los Angeles to Park City  to join us at the table for ten the following day.

As my parents arrived to their Sumer home  just five minutes away,  I rushed over, heart pounding with excitement. 

But when I got there, something was wrong. 

My brother lay on the ground, and beside him, my mother, blood everywhere. 

He assured me it was a slight fall, but as we rushed to the hospital, the severity became clear: broken nose, cracked rib, and slight brain bleed.
She’ll need to be transferred to another facility,” Dr. Stone explained, “and given her age likely remain there for several days.” 

We all knew what this meant.

Amidst her bruises and severe pain, my mother, a Holocaust survivor, called me to her bedside. “You are the women of the house, it’s important that you still open your home to others, to tell the Passover story of freedom and resilience. Please carry through and host the Seder. I told her everyone can still come to the house, but that I would join her in the hospital and we could Zoom in together.
🙏 Overhearing the conversation, a nurse intervened with a suggestion. “Why not host the Seder here?” And so, we agreed, albeit with the decision to keep it family only, understanding the trauma and weight of my mother's appearance post-accident.
The following day brought unexpected news. The doctor was stunned with her recovery and ordered  her discharge. 
“So everyone is coming to the house for the Seder she asked?.” 
Some family members protested. “You don’t want your guests to see you this way. You look like you lost fifteen rounds in a boxing match.” 🥊

🔯 Indignant, my mother snapped, “That’s not what this holiday is about. It’s about freedom, community, and Tikun Olam, (making the world a better place).......................................besides, God doesn’t care what I look like!” 

Last Monday night with  our guests included, we told the story of the Exodus, opened our home to friends of our faith (and others), drank the fourth cup of wine and remembered it’s always better to do good than to look good. 

Thank you Mom for continuing to  show up as my role model and my best friend.

Years ago, while on a hike and (talking on the phone with my colleague—a millennial) —he said, "Shari, you've got to cut it out with the boring written blogs. Ditch the script and do video instead!"

😤 I replied, "I'm not doing a video. I'm a writer, an author, not a videographer. I don't have videography equipment."

He countered, "No, you don't understand. It's not authentic. These written blogs you're doing are corporate, boring, uninspired. You're not relating to people my age. Just speak your truth on video. 

He pressed on, "I dare you. I double dare you. Make a video right now and post it on social media."

"I’m not doing that. I’m a mess. I'm sweating, my hair is gross, and I don't have any makeup on."

😎 "Exactly! People today want unplanned, raw authenticity."

🥇 Well, I like a good challenge, so I said, "Okay fine, I'll do it."
So, I held up my camera (my phone) and made a video.

 I couldn’t believe what happened next. We got as many views from a single video on top of a mountain as I had gotten from my blogs over the last three years. That's when I realized:

Turns out, a lot.

A keynote speaker is en route to his next gig in Atlantic City when his chauffeur remarks, "You know, George, I've seen your speech so many times, I bet I could deliver it myself!"

The speaker, intrigued, agrees, "Alright, we're 30 minutes away. Go ahead and give it a shot."

The chauffeur delivers a flawless 45-minute keynote. He pauses dramatically, uses engaging hand gestures, tells impactful stories, and even earns laughter that crescendos into a standing ovation.

However, trouble brews when the Q&A session begins. After the first question, the chauffeur, looking exasperated, declares, "That's such a trivial question—my chauffeur could answer it! George, come on up!"

After delivering over a thousand live speeches, I can say the best part is always the Q&A. It's where the audience engages with content so they can apply it to their products and services to win more sales, and increase connection. 

You never know what you'll get. Last week, I was asked, "Do you feel that this concept of compliance versus commitment applies to dating?" These are my favorite conversations!

🎶 Strumming Old Banjo Technique?

When objections hit, it’s easy to get defensive. But here’s a trick from my childhood that works wonders.

Picture this: My brother, in a fit of anger, called my mom a ‘strumming old banjo.’ Instead of getting mad, my mom calmly listened to understand what upset him.

Now, apply this to sales. When a customer throws an objection your way, think of them as calling you a ‘strumming old banjo.’ Instead of reacting defensively, ask for clarification.

For example, if they say you missed a deadline, respond with, ‘So, if I understand correctly, missing the deadline upset you. Is that right?’

By acknowledging their feelings and clarifying the issue, you can defuse tension and move closer to closing the sale. 🛠️💼
