Today I am feeling vibrant, yet it hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows 🌈 

From and early age, I experienced first hand how mental illness can wreak havoc on a persons life, happiness and ultimately health. 

During my career with over 30 years of experience in the Health and Fitness industry, I kept my mental health condition hidden well,  masking my struggles with a facade of “okay-ness” that eventually took a serious toll on me.

This was a journey that led me to where I am today.

I

What’s it really like going to chemotherapy ? 🤔

Here are six juicy truths about what my chemo sessions are really like: 🍑

🍿NETFLIX AND CHILL anyone? The chemo appointments themselves are pretty laid back (dare I say relaxing?). which leaves loads of time for making the most of a challenging situation by lounging back, asking questions, chatting with your new BFF’s and laughing with the nurses before any side effects decide to gate crash - which they did almost instantly. 

🍪 PAIN? What pain? In fact, I haven't really feel anything during the sessions themselves, other than an urge to raid the snack stash before the nausea and weird tingly feet arrived. 

🎬 IT’S NOTHING LIKE THE MOVIES, and It's nowhere near as depressing as it looks. It's a heartwarming tale of kindness, hope, and the occasional dad joke. Everyone is here to help you get healthy! 

⏰ TICK-TOCK, but not in a bad way. Time may drag its feet, but I try to make some days special (yes, you should buy that new pair of shoes and anything sequins- obvs). Treatment rolls by faster when you have things to look forward to.

🙅🏻‍♀️TOUGH COOKIE ALERT! Yep, cancer's scary, but guess what? You're tougher. Strap in and get ready to surprise yourself with your own badassery. 

🤗YOU’RE NEVER FLYING SOLO . Non of us react the same to chemo and everyone’s experiences are different, but one thing we do all have are compassionate teams of doctors, nurses, and staff to support you. Plus there's a HUGE community of people out there who've got the t-shirt and waiting to welcome you with open arms. Get ready for lots of hugs!

So, buckle up - The thought of going to Chemo sessions might make your knees knock, But we do get through it. 💚

 ❌ According to The Hidden Cost of Cancer report, commissioned by Zurich UK,  a staggering 4 in 5 people living with cancer deal with unexpected expenses of £541 per month. 

The leading hidden costs? 

 🚗 Petrol required for countless appointments, especially with fuel costs soaring by a whopping 48% in just two years. 

🏥Hospital parking fees - Topping the list of most expensive hospital parking is ST Thomas Hospital in London - a whopping £19.20 for 6hrs ( Average time spent having chemo) 

🔥 Increased energy consumption just to stay warm - anyone else out their heating on this morning? 

🍇 Higher food bills to accommodate dietary changes due to side effects 

 🧑‍🦲Headwear such as scarves, hats and wigs- Mr potato head is so last season. 

 💅🏻 Cancer friendly cosmetics - yup,  chemo and radiotherapy love to irritate your skin.

The word “Cancer” can feel uncomfortable can’t it?  But that discomfort? It's necessary for progress.

We've got to shake off the shame, fear, and all that blame (seriously, people actually ask what I did wrong?) 🙈

To break those myths and stigma, we need to open up  a whole lot more about cancer.

‘Scanxiety’ - Scan anxiety is a cancer patient’s fear and worry associated with CT, MRI and PET imaging. ☢️

The what-ifs start flooding in: What if it's cancer? What if the treatment isn't working ? What if cancer has returned? 

❌ 3 in 5 people find the mental health challenge of cancer harder to cope with than the physical.

❌ 82% of people who had cancer find fear cancer returning and pressure to ‘get back to normal’ as hardest things to deal with post their cancer treatment.

❌ 29% of cancer survivors  experience PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress)

We need to wake up to the fact that cancer is a mental challenge as well as a physical one. 🧠

Ever wondered what chemo side effects really feel like? 🤔 

Well, I could tell you but one size doesn't fit all. 

With a whopping 100 different chemotherapy drugs out there,- everyone experience is different  😲

Forget the myth of a single miracle drug – there's a massive variety of cancers too, over 200 types, with more than 1000 subtypes. Each one gets its own special treatment plan.

Your chemo journey might look nothing like your friend's, even if you're both in treatment for the same beast. And let's talk side effects – they're as unpredictable as the weather. ☔

Not every chemo session means saying goodbye to your locks either. Some just thin things out a bit. It all depends on the cocktail you're sipping. 🧑‍🦲

And, about that myth that you turn into a walking contamination zone? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes, you can still cuddle up, share a toilet, even get intimate. Just hold off on the smooches for a bit and “wrap it up, because chemo can linger in your fluids for up to 72 hours. 🍆

Today marks my 3rd round with "The Red Devil" – EC chemo. After this, it's 4 rounds of doxytaxol. It's a tough journey, but every step forward brings me closer to having no sign of disease. 🙏

❌ Pushing psychic surgery as a miracle cure, then throwing shade at my cancer care team like it's a hobby, - no thanks  

❌ Blabbering about past lives, sins, and curses causing cancer? - Seriously?

 ❌ Those ridiculous assertions about apricot seeds, aloe vera, or turmeric curing cancer? - Spare me.

 ❌ Oh, and the whole "secret cancer cure" conspiracy? - Give me a break.

It's time to cut the nonsense and stick to the evidence and real science. 🧪

Telling me some far-fetched story about a friend of a friend,  whose ex-partners, dog walkers Nan cured cancer by drinking their own wee is not proof- it's a cruel deception and damn right dangerous.

I am not brave! ❌

Yesterday was like a test I didn't study for, leaving me feeling anything but great about myself. 

Maybe it's because I'm now completely bald, with just one eyelash hanging on for dear life -  I mean, who the hell is that looking back at me in the mirror? 🧑‍🦲

The fact it took me all day just to send two emails?  - yup, chemo brain is real people, and it's not fun. 😶‍🌫️

Or perhaps it's the crushing weight of loneliness I hadn't planned for, and often accompanies cancer treatment? 🤦🏻‍♀️

It takes so much energy to act like everything's okay, when it's really not all of the time - not for anyone. 🫶

But, No sympathies needed. Today is a new day! 💕

No one feels great all the time. It's not realistic, healthy or sustainable, but  acknowledging it - now that's brave, and is a massive step forward in the right direction. 💚

Turns out I’m getting recognised more than I recognise myself right now! 🧑‍🦲

Yesterday morning started with unexpected panic and anxiety as I got ready for The Watercooler & The Office 2024 -  I almost didn’t make it! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I mean, What if someone spots my wig? Or my eyelashes decide to bail on me? 

And, don’t even get me started on that dreaded head tilt  "Oh poor you, is it cancer?" look.🤦🏻‍♀️

Working in mental health is no walk in the park, add navigating cancer treatment to the mix? It's a whole new level of tough. 🧠

I pour my heart and soul into being the best I can be, so no one ever has to experience what I have. 🫶

So, to be recognised for my efforts?  To have people actually approach me - yes me! and actively seek me out for talks with their organisations-   I’m speechless!

For the first time in my life, the girl who grew up with major depression disorder never feeling good enough, is starting to feel like maybe, just maybe, I am.💚

Is there a hidden cure for cancer?

I hate to burst your bubble, but the answer is a solid no! 🫧

Here's what's really going on:

 🧠There are over 200 types of cancer and 100 subtypes. Whether it starts in the breast or the lung, each one plays by its own rules. So, a one-size-fits-all miracle drug? - Nope, not happening.

 ☢️ Cancer requires a toolbox of treatments—chemo, surgery, radiation, immunotherapy—all working together like a dream team, So, expecting one miracle fix for every cancer? - wishful thinking 

The science bit! 👩🏻‍🔬

You can't just stumble upon a drug in the lab that zaps cancer cells and hand it out to patients like candy. It's way more complicated than that. 🥴

✅You need to see how it works, 
✅ How it affects the whole body?  
✅ Does it wreck too many good cells? ✅ Does it play nice with other meds?  ✅ What about side effects?

Testing any drug can take ages- think 10-15yrs and less than 5% ever make it to market. 

Could you keep it a secret? 🤐

 🧐 Think about it: 1 in 2 of us will get cancer in our lifetime, so the odds are someone in the know would have a personal connection.  Researchers, patients on trials and pharma companies—all in on it? Could you really keep a cure under wraps while watching loved ones suffer.

💰But, what about the money ?

Sure, some argue it's more profitable to keep treatments going than to offer a cure. But imagine the gold mine if there were one single cure! Not to mention shares in the company.  🤑

We have a choice. Stick to what's real and effective, or risk lives by spreading rumours 💚

Do I look like a warrior to you? 🥷

I'm not exactly flexing my muscles or stashing a suit of armor in my wardrobe. 
Plus losing my hair doesn't really scream Linda Hamilton from 'Terminator 2'. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The whole warrior thing puts this immense pressure on cancer patients to always be strong, but that's not realistic. It's too easy to feel like we're failing when we're not constantly showing strength. 

It's okay to be weak and definitely okay to be vulnerable because that's what makes us human, right? 

But, even in our lowest moments, we somehow manage to find the strength to keep going. 🙅🏻‍♀️

Surviving isn't just about staying alive—it's about wearing more sequins- obvs, and taking the lessons cancer teaches us to to become better versions of ourselves.! 🤗

Cancer is like s*x! 🫣

What?? Cancer isn't exactly fun, with Netflix and chilling taking a backseat. But think about it. 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨

Diving into the deep end of intimacy and facing cancer can feel eerily similar. 
Both scenarios are like staring into the abyss of uncertainty, wondering what's next. 

That's where the magic of communication swoops in! 🎩 

Communication and trust hold immense power when it comes to intimacy. they're absolute game-changers when it comes to dealing with cancer.  🚀

It's about baring our souls, sharing our fears, and and leaning on those we trust.

Vulnerability becomes our strength. It's the courage to show our true selves, flaws and all, and having the guts to ask for help when we need it most. 💪

If we're ever going to break the taboo, we need to embrace the awkwardness. 

Progress demands us to feel uncomfortable. 🥊

If we don't, cancer will remain an unspoken word fueled by stigma (yes you did hear that right), shame and ignorance, don't you agree? 💚

How can communication and trust help in dealing with cancer?

How can we prevent discrimination against cancer patients at work?

STOP blaming mass killings on mental illness! 🛑

When someone tosses around "mental illness" like it's the go-to excuse for every bad move someone makes, they're not just clueless, they're adding to the stigma against those who live with mental health challenges.

let's set the record straight: 

❌ Most people who do harm are NOT struggling with mental illness. 

In fact, people dealing with mental health issues are more likely to be on the receiving end of violence, not the other way around. 

The evidence 👇

💡People with severe mental illness experience violence 5x more than those who don't! 

🧠 Women with server mental illness experience violence 10x more than those who don't. - Mind 

But some folks can't wrap their heads around the idea that some people are just plain nasty, so they try to blame something else. 

Take the whole "narcissist" label people slap around for example. 

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD)  affects between 1 - 5 % percent of the UK population.

But most people branded as narcissists are just plain selfish.

The truth is, most people who are evil aren't dealing with mental illness. So, every time someone tries to blame mental illness for something as heinous the Bondi tragedy it makes my blood boil.

It's like the lowest blow you can make.🥊
