One year ago, I didn’t know how I would do it. I didn’t know how I’d continue to be a high performer in my career, build programs in my coaching and consulting business, show up as a present mom for my kids, and not lose myself in the process. 

But we did it. And I say “we” because there’s no way I could have done this alone. My friends and family, professional network, coworkers, neighborhood and community, understanding teachers (who graciously provided multiple email reminders about classroom events and assignments…oops), incredible clients, and more. 

I’m certain there are folks I am forgetting, but I’m still recovering from a jam-packed weekend that included my (now) one year old getting her first taste of sugar, and subsequently partying until 11:30 p.m.

So thank you. 🙏🩵

In case you needed something to smile about today 🥹

Today was bookended with opportunities for connection, collaboration, and community. 

I spent the first few hours of the morning with the ATD Kansas City Board for a powerful strategy session, followed by collaborating on a work project.

I had the pleasure of virtually meeting Amber Watts🌱 (I’m not sure I’ve ever had so much in common with someone upon meeting them 😂). 

Then closed out the day by catching up with Dr. Melissa Robinson-Winemiller, TEDx speaker, author, trainer, I always love our calls. 

The icing on the cake was an unexpected call from Sheryl Kurtis on my way to pick up the baby from daycare. 

My heart (and brain 🧠) are full.

A quick leadership reframe I keep coming back to this time of year:

If everything feels like a priority… nothing really is.

Alignment isn’t about doing less for the sake of it.
It’s about being ruthless (and kind) about what deserves your energy right now.

A coaching question I love:
👉 What would actually move the needle if I gave it my full attention?

Simple. Not easy. Always worth it.

One thing I’m letting go of this year:

Performative productivity.

Busy ≠ effective.

It’s snowing here in Kansas City, with severe winter storm warnings through tomorrow. 

The perfect conditions for staying inside, spending some quality time with family, cozying up by the fire, and working on my book.

You know what I hate about marketing? How messages are always written to make you think something is wrong with you. Or that something is missing. Or that you’re not good enough. 

 💡BUUUUTTT if you buy this product/service/program, ALL those problems will be GONE. You’ll be like a brand new person. 

You’ll have every want and need fulfilled. Your life will be everything you ever wanted it to be. 

💸Just click the “Buy Now” button and *poof* your Fairy Godmother shows up to turn the pumpkin into a carriage, your rags into a gorgeous designer gown, and your little rodent friends into a full-blown house staff. 

❌I call BS. 

There is nothing wrong with you. 

It is ok to be content with where you are AND strive to become better. 

It is ok to embrace your imperfections AND work to improve in those areas. 

It is ok to believe that people support you (and accept that support) AND continue to put in the work. 

Most importantly…it is ok to want what YOU want…not what anyone else thinks you should want from your life.

I connected with a peer in my mentor coaching program last week, and we were discussing the climate of the US (and I’m not talking about the cold temps). 

In my 41 years, I’ve never seen so much hatred and vitriol running rampant. Justifying appalling behavior. 

When I was a kid studying the Holocaust, I used to wonder, how in the world could this have happened? 

After the last few years of seeing global events unfold, I’m starting to understand.

Patience is not my forte.

In other words, I’m full of fire 🔥.
 
I have learned over time how to use this to my advantage, but there are times when I find myself feeling impatient about the lack of progress on projects. 

In those moments, I like to take time to look at the milestone achievements, lessons learned along the way, and build out a project planning template so I can avoid some of those roadblocks in the future.

Today the baby is home, and my mind is already spinning through all the to-dos. One of those mornings that feels full before it even really starts. 

As I was sitting with that, I kept thinking about what I’m learning about fierce self-compassion, and why compassion and gratitude are my words for the year.


Dr. Kristin Neff’s research reminds me that self-compassion isn’t soft or self-indulgent. It’s actually a strength. People who practice it tend to be happier, more hopeful, and more steady. They experience less stress, anxiety, and burnout, and they’re more resilient when life feels heavy. They also take better care of themselves. They sleep better, get sick less often, and are more likely to follow through on things like movement, nourishment, and rest.

What really lands for me is that self-compassion supports motivation without the inner criticism. It helps us take responsibility for our lives without tearing ourselves down in the process. It strengthens emotional intelligence and relationships, and it allows us to show up for others without burning out.

And maybe the most meaningful part is that self-compassion creates a sense of worth that isn’t tied to productivity, achievement, or approval. There’s no constant comparison or needing to prove anything. Just a more stable, kinder way of being with ourselves.

Not a bad return for something as simple as treating yourself the way you’d treat a good friend. Especially on days like today, when the list is long, the baby needs me, and I’m practicing choosing compassion and gratitude anyway.

A simple alignment audit you can do in under two minutes:

Think back on your week so far.

• What moments did you enjoy the most?
• What felt surprisingly energizing?

Pay attention to those answers.

Alignment often shows up as energy before it shows up as clarity.

Before the week ends, try this:

Name one thing you did that felt aligned.

Not impressive. Not perfect. 
Just truly "you". 

That’s usually where momentum actually begins.

Do you prefer in-person or online meetings? 

I love the option of connecting with multiple people in different geographic locations virtually, but there is nothing like being in the same physical space.
