There was a time when all I wanted was to work less.
I thought that was the path to happiness.

For years, I believed less work meant more life.

But the truth is, I’ve always liked working.
Work gave me freedom, and so much more.

It helped me:

• Escape abusive relationships.
• Learn what no degree could teach.
• Travel the world.
• Make friends I now call family.
• Find a life partner.

I’ve worked at great companies, including LinkedIn.
With smart people, real challenges, and solid paychecks.

Some even covered housing, pricey flights, 
and meals that still make me laugh uncomfortably.

But I got my first job as a teenager.
That’s more than 20 years of working non-stop.

So I planned my escape.
I took side gigs. Saved. Invested.
Trained myself to live simply.

All to one day… work less.

Then I started my LinkedIn Ads practice,
a business meant to buy me time and freedom.
Turns out this baby had other plans 😅 

The market seems to need what I offer.
My inbox exploded.
Most of my replies now start with:

I booked a trip to Italy. Then I quit my job.

Earlier this year, I booked a trip to Italy with two friends.
At the time, I was working at Impactable and planned to use my PTO.

But in June, everything changed…
I went solo and started offering my own LinkedIn Ads Management services.
Four months later, I had more partnerships than I expected.

But the WhatsApp group named “Ciao, Italia!!!” wouldn’t stop buzzing.
The plan was intense:
The Colosseum. The Vatican. Naples’ busy streets. Elena Ferrante’s city tour.
Pompeii. Mount Vesuvius. Tiramisù, sfogliatella, babà, prosciutto di Parma, spaghetti alla Genovese, spaghetti alle vongole, vino della casa, espresso, cappuccino...
I mean... I had to go.

I told my friends I’d need to work for about half the time.
And that’s exactly what I did.

I was nervous about working outside my usual setup.
But it turns out, it’s absolutely possible.

I made sure my partners were taken care of, 
but paused new projects for two weeks. 
And I’m really glad I did.

I had ten (okay, maybe five) amazing days with two amazing people.
We learned, laughed, and even got emotional inside the Colosseum - realizing that gladiators, once seen as athletes, fought and killed animals there (except wolves, which were revered in Roman mythology).

We also learned that centuries ago, Naples was actually larger than Rome, one of the biggest cities in Europe at the time.

And one of my friends introduced me to the concept of flânerie.
The art of wandering, observing, and discovering the soul of a city.

But more than that, this trip reminded me why I chose to go solo.
To build something that represents me.
To create from anywhere.
To live a life that fits the person I’m.

I’m glad I went.
I’m glad it worked.
And now I’m back - more energized than ever! 😎 
(And maybe missing Italy a little already.)

But when the word first appeared, it didn’t mean someone from Brazil.
It meant the traders who extracted and sold pau-brasil,
the red wood that first brought the Portuguese to our land.

Our national identity wasn’t born from geography.
It was born from labor.

After almost five years, I’m back working closely with Brazilians.
And that history feels alive.

Not in the sense of glorifying overwork,
but in the way Brazilians face challenges.

I had forgotten how much my people are hustlers.
Maybe it’s just my little bubble, but I’m impressed.

Yes, we might be like this because we have to.
To make ends meet.
To pay for services that should be public.
To change the course of life for a generation that had to survive.

But that shouldn’t take away the credit Brazilians deserve.

This post is to honor:
The creativity.
The scrappiness.
The hunger to thrive.

Sometimes you just need a better strategy

When this client hired me three months ago, they said:
“We’ve been testing LinkedIn for a while. We see the signs… but something’s missing”.

They had some crucial pieces in place:

✅ Deep audience understanding
✅ Consistent brand investment
✅ Content their prospects valued
✅ Optimized landing pages
✅ A sales team ready to act

But what they didn’t have was a LinkedIn Ads strategy.

Here’s a bit of what changed when we added one:

1. Increased reach (without raising budget)
They’d been using a small company list for too long.

We opened up the funnel with a broader company list and added a LinkedIn native campaign to reach new potential buyers.

2. Launched retargeting (strategically) 
Budget was limited, but staying top-of-mind wasn’t optional.

So we introduced retargeting to extend ad frequency.

→ 10 of 11 MQLs came from retargeting
→ 100% of content leads came from retargeting

3. Diversified content formats
They’d relied heavily on TLAs and image ads.

We expanded into documents, text, conversation ads, and video is next.

We also tested objectives, bidding strategies, and message angles.
But the core strategy never changed.

Month 1 was tough.
Month 2 showed progress.
Month 3 might just renew our agreement.

A good email saves time.
A bad one creates five more.

Most of our work happens in writing,
yet few people treat email as a real skill.

I’ve heard this line more times than I can count:
“Sheila, your email just saved another meeting”.

That’s when I realized: writing a good email isn’t just admin.
It’s communication, leadership, and empathy in written form.

Over time, I built a mental checklist I run through before I hit send:

1. Clarity
What exactly do I need to communicate?
How can I make it unskippable?

•Bullets for short lists
•Bold or headers when context matters

2. Action
What’s the outcome I want?
Why does it matter?
Who’s responsible, and by when?

3. Anticipation
What could confuse someone if I don’t explain it?
Can I add a link, file, or note to prevent another back-and-forth?

4. Readability
Is the punctuation clean?
Is there enough white space?
Is it easy to scan?

5. Relevance
Does everyone cc’ed really need this?

6. Voice
Am I being clear, relevant, and thoughtful?

The real point is this:
I write with intention because I care about how people experience working with me.

That started long before my work ever felt polished or “premium”.
I just cared about the people on the other side.

Email isn’t just admin.
It’s leadership in writing.
