Google Vs Common Man: 
Why am I fighting and why your sharing the news matters

As my lawyer daughter’s ( Salonee Shukla ) post sharing Gujarat High Court’s interim order preventing Google from deleting my son’s (Neel Shukla) account has found good traction, here are three issues that you need to understand…To realise that it is a matter that matters to all of us humans. 

First point is, “Can AI judge Humans?”

This case is a precursor to many that must follow, as it is a start point of AI passing a judgment about what it can’t understand, i.e., human relationships. It doesn’t and CANNOT “know” a grandmother-child relationship. Here there is not much debate required as we all can relate to the idea of AI having no place/right in judging human relationships. 

The second one is tricky, and it is, “Can a private entity like Google be allowed to scan personal data, on whatever pretext?”

We need to realise that Child-porn can just be a boogeyman created to open a door into our private lives. All of you young people who are up in arms when government wants your ADHAR card number will accept Google to have total access to your private lives because Child-porn presses that emotional button that blinds you to the fact that once inside, we have no way to know what AI is doing. AI could well be checking your pictures to see which products or actor or leader you photograph to tweak your behaviour. 

This emotional blindness is dangerous, as it is not only compromising your privacy completely, it can be a national security threat. 

The third issue, a procedural one is simply crazy to have escaped the attention of the nation calling itself IT leader of the world. 

As per the Information Technology Act, 2000 that governs this entire space, civil courts have no jurisdiction here. 

Section 61 of IT Act reads,
“Civil court not to have jurisdiction.-
No court shall have jurisdiction to entertain any suit or proceeding in respect of any matter ….”

So, who has this critical power?

Section 48 of IT Act provides that, “The Central Government shall, by notification, establish one or more appellate tribunals to be known as the Cyber Appellate Tribunal.”

If you are a student of law, do look up this beast, and if you find it, please report to me. 

The IT act also provides for the state-level adjudicating officer, i.e. an IAS heading Department of Science & Technology or Department of Information Technology (as some states use this name for the same department). This is manned by an IAS officer and hence there is no clarity on how it will function. 

This David vs Goliath fight between a common citizen vs one of largest and most powerful corporations of the world is NOT for personal gain. 

It is a fight for protection of human rights from the onslaught of Artificial Intelligence. 

It is about all of us, and your support matters.

In 2024, AI has taken over the tech world by storm.

Microsoft, Google, and Meta have spent billions of dollars to acquire and ship large language models like — ChatGPT, Gemini, and LlaMa.

According to similarweb, ChatGPT by OpenAI got 1.6 billion hits in the month Feb 24.

AI runs on powerful chips and this storm has been luckiest for AI chip maker NVIDIA.

On Feb 24, it has crossed a market cap of $2 trillion. Only the fifth company in the world to achieve this benchmark.

Reason?

There is a popular saying, in a gold rush — sell shovels.

In the Global AI arms race chips are the shovels and tech giants are in a neck-to-neck fight to obtain powerful H100 chips.

H100 chips are the most powerful chips specially designed for building AI applications.

It has 80 billion transistors that are responsible for its robust speed and efficiency.

It is used to train and run Large language models (LLMs) that can generate texts and images in a human-like manner on a single prompt.

Today all the leading tech giants are in a race to acquire H100 chips. As per reports, Microsoft and Meta have acquired 150,000+ AI accelerator chips each while others have ordered these chips in higher numbers.

As per the reports these chips are sold out till January 2025.


Most of us have no idea that AI is already in our daily use through smartphones, laptops, search engines, and language translation.

Today, every big multinational company wants to integrate AI into their business offerings and plans to spend money to reskill their workforce.

AI Applications -
a. Customer Support — AI-powered conversational bots
b. Transport — Computer vision powered automobiles
c. Healthcare — Image or Signal Sensing technology to fight against deadly diseases
d. Finance — Data-rich predictional models for forecasting trends
e. Arts — Video/Image/Text Generation through Gen AI models

Why upgrade your skills in AI?

AI is here to stay.
As per an IBM report, 77% of top tech companies have either implemented AI or are exploring the best use cases for business offerings.

Companies are using AI to get more business at lesser costs. AI is not a direct threat to our jobs but an AI skilled human is.

For example, if you are riding a horse, you can reach faster to your destination, than a normal walker.

But, you can’t compete with the speed and efficiency of a petrol-engine bike.

AI skilled workforce is in huge demand and a top priority for all the top Fortune 500 companies.

If you want to stay relevant in the rapidly changing world of the 21st century, then AI is your sweet spot.

Where to start?

There are several options available online for starting to learn about AI.

First, you need to understand what impact AI is creating in your particular space.

Second, consider what exactly you need to learn within the AI domain.

Imagine you are a creator or an individual user who is using a tech platform for daily life work or building an audience on a platform.

And, one day your account gets permanently banned.

This account might be your only source of bread and butter.

This account might have your years of valuable data and priceless conversations/emails/moments/art.

In one go, boom.

Everything vanishes.

Why?

- Cause an AI program finds it irrelevant or harmful.
- Cause some contractual folks have mass-reported it.
- Cause you are only a tool for these companies to mint more bucks. 

Unfortunately, there is no cap on the powers of these tech giants. Individuals and Creators have suffered a lot due to not just AI algorithms but biases. 

- Dr. Aniruddh Malpani was banned on this platform.
- String 'WhoTube' channel was removed without any strike or warning.
- Wion 'WhoTube' channel was blocked for 12 hours due to their reporting on the Russia-Ukraine matter
- A popular insta handle with 600K+ followers was suddenly banned from Meta without any explanations or warning. 

These are just a few examples.

Today, most public companies have their contractual online reputation management firms.

These firms ensure if you are commenting against these firms, your account might get reported from 100s of fake accounts and you'll be banned. 

We need strict laws and awareness about this.

The question is - are these tech giants turning into the gatekeepers of our world?

Can a machine learning model trained on trillion tokens of datasets judge and punish humans?

The concept of predictive policing algorithms itself is the problem.

Lack of transparency and biased training data mean these tools are not fit for purpose. 

If we can’t fix them, we should ditch them.

EU Digital Market Act is one step to make the market more inclusive, yet nothing much for the rights of a common man using internet. 
We need more Desi platforms with a human touch.

In 1976, this guy got 100 orders of pre-assembled computers, within one year of the prototype - Apple 1 launch. Yes, he’s Steve JOBS.

While his partner in crime, Steve Woznaick designed all its hardware and software.

In 1977, Apple democratized the personal computer industry with the launch of APPLE II.

Apple Computer went public in 1980 in largest IPO since Ford in 1956.
Apple raised around $100 million in 1980.

It sold 4.6 million shares at $22 per share.

Today Apple is valued at more than 2.6 trillion USD.

It generated $387 billion in revenue in 2023 (52% - iPhone Sales)

Let’s have a quick scan of the early startup days of Apple and what worked for them.

1. Target Audience - The first computer by Apple targeted people who loved technology products. Apple 1. 

It was not a complete computer for daily use but people can build a computer around it. 

This niche segment helped Apple build its initial name in the market, dominated by Tech giants like HP and IBM.

2. Innovations - A key innovation of the Apple I was that it included video display terminal circuitry and a keyboard interface on a single board, allowing it to connect to a low-cost composite video monitor instead of an expensive computer terminal, compared to most existing computers at the time. It has a small start max 200 units of sales.

In 1977, Apple II came with color graphics and became quite popular among tech enthusiasts with 5 million units sold till 1993.

3. Unique Selling Proposition - Apple realized the need for computers with a better design for everyday personal usage. 

Apple partnered with some amazing designers who helped to create design aesthetics for Apple II. The Apple II, released in 1977, was more user-friendly with a uniquely designed keyboard and casing.

4. First customers - Apple started showcasing their first launch Apple 1 at local computer labs and one guy - Paul Terrell who was starting his computer shop in California saw their presentation and was impressed. 

He preordered 50 APPLE I computers at $500 cost. While they were selling at $666 in the retail. 

Jobs persuaded local vendors to provide computer parts at the 30-day window and ensured that he’d pay back once he received money for the computers ordered.

Our take - One insight from Apple’s early days is a clear understanding of the market and a clear proposition - user-friendly personal computers for daily usage. 

In an era of ugly computers, Jobs realized the consumer needs of a beautifully designed machine that can be used at home. 

Every other innovation was inspired from existing computer products, but it was the final packaging and innovative marketing that made Apple the king of PCs in the 90s.

I was listening to a podcast on Huberman show: a  conversation with Dr. Cal Newport. One of the topics I loved was the importance Dr. Cal gave to deep focus and how prolonged usage of smartphones is limiting our concentration.

Most of us struggle with pseudo-productivity.
