Is your next internship a scam?

Watch out for these red flags:

1) Vague Job Description:

Example:

Title: HR Intern
Company: XYZ (description missing)
Responsibilities:
Assist HR team with various tasks.
Maintain personnel files.
Perform other HR-related duties as assigned.

- What kind of tasks will you be doing? Data entry, onboarding new hires, scheduling interviews?

-Is the internship focused on recruitment, benefits administration, or employee relations?

This is a big red flag.

2) Unrealistic Perks and Promises:

Beware of internships offering:

- High stipends (like 40k-50k for a basic internship)
- Unpaid positions with vague promises of performance-based rewards
- "Life-changing" experiences without clear learning opportunities

3) Missing Stipend Range:

- A reputable company will clearly state the stipend or compensation offered in the internship post.

4) No Proper Hiring Process:

Be cautious of companies that:

- Suddenly call you for an interview without scheduling a formal interview call.
- Don't ask you to fill out an application form
- Skip giving assignment tests
- Don't explain the interview rounds or timeframe

5) Work Before Offer Letter:

- Asking you to start working without a formal offer letter outlining your responsibilities, pay, perks, the terms and conditions.

6) Poor Online Presence:

A legitimate company should have:

- A professional website, LinkedIn profile, and social media presence with clear information about the company, its mission, and services.

Missing these is a big red flag.


In your experience, what are some warning signs that an internship might not be what it seems?

   - Stipend: INR 6k-16k + incentives
   - Core responsibilities: Researching and finding ways to improve our business, generating leads, and collaborating with other businesses and institutions to achieve goals.
   - Open positions: 3
   - Hours: 5-6 hours a day

2) Business Development Assistant 
   - CTC: INR 300k-800k + incentives
   - Responsibilities: Similar to the internship, but with greater autonomy and responsibility.
   - Open positions: 2
   - Hours: 8 hrs a day

Both roles are 100% remote and offer flexibility and freedom to experiment and try different approaches.

Internship mistakes I see most students making :

An internship that's tough to crack, demands time and attention, and challenges them to go beyond their comfort zone is considered a bad internship by most students.

They find it easier to do some generic internships that are quite easy and provide them with certificates to add to their resumes.

So, they keep collecting generic internship certificates like trophies.

Doing one quality internship can make a huge difference in your career. 

You realize this after leaving college and sitting in a job interview.

Is the job market going to improve anytime soon?


Yes, definitely. But it will be more evolved and competitive.

This means you can expect more competition, requiring you to fight harder to stay relevant.

In the coming years, AI will replace many tech and non-tech jobs.

The remaining jobs will evolve to meet changing needs and demands.  

This will also lead to the creation of many new jobs. 

But the skills gap will remain a big challenge, as lots of people won't have the skills needed for these new jobs.

How can you future-proof your career?

• Think long-term. Look at least 5-8 years ahead and prepare yourself.

• If you're currently in college or just graduated, your focus should be on:

✓ Keeping up with new tech and AI
✓ Developing skill sets that AI will take years to replace:

8 out of 10 unemployed graduates I spoke to had two things in common:

1) Poor communication skills: If you have poor communication skills, specifically in English, you won't be able to communicate effectively—whether it's writing a job application email, listening and answering interview questions effectively to build rapport, or using non-verbal communication to make a good impression during interviews. 

As a result, you won't be able to land the job. It's that simple.

Communication is king and will continue to be. 

2) Lack of willingness: If you lack willingness, you won't have the drive to improve, and you will stay where you are.

Being able to learn, adapt, and take initiative is a superpower.


What's stopping you from getting the job you want?

The more jobs you apply to, the better your chances of landing an interview.

This is the biggest lie job seekers tell themselves.

Here's why:

Recruiters spend mere seconds scanning resumes and are tired of seeing generic applications, so your application won't even stand a chance.

But if you focus on quality, not just quantity: 

- Investing 10-15 minutes per application to research the company and the job requirements

20 year old you: I will focus on it in a few years, I have whole life ahead, plenty of time.

26 year old you: Wish I had started it 5 years earlier.

34 year old you: Wish I hadn't waited this long.

Procrastination is a disease that kills more dreams than anything else.

You put things off, you miss deadlines, chances to learn new skills, and opportunities to do things that could make your life so much better.

The longer you wait, the bigger and more intimidating your goals become in your mind.

And over time, you end up losing your energy, time, and resources that could have been used to achieve them.


Breaking free from the procrastination cycle isn't easy.

But the good news is, it's not impossible, no matter your age or life stage.

Spent 2 weeks with my HR intern reviewing and responding to over 400 applications we received for our internship programs.

Out of all the replies we sent, only 23 applicants actually responded.


Any tools that can automate the initial review of applications so we don't have to respond to each email manually?

We often hear about candidates being ghosted by HR, but why does no one talk about the other side? 

This month, we reviewed over 800 applications and responded to 600 (200 emails were unclear, without subject, texts, etc., so we set them aside to reply later), yet only received 50 replies.

Imagine spending weeks going through each email and sending responses only to have many go unanswered.

We put in the effort to reply to each application but many drop off before even reaching the pre-selection stage.

There could be many reasons, which I won't discuss today in this post but now we have become pickier with replies and are considering automation from screening to assessment.

I'm not getting a job because the job market is tough. 

I'm overweight because being fit is expensive.

I can't start my dream business because I don't have enough money.


See, our brains are like sponges. 

They soak up the stories you constantly feed them, and that stops you from going beyond your limited perspective to find out the actual truth. 

These stories slowly become your reality.

But what if I told you that it's possible to flip the script and use it to your advantage?

Instead of feeding your brain, 'I can't get a job because the market is tough,' tell it, 'The market is tough, but I can leverage my skills and network to get the job.'

Instead of telling yourself 'I'm overweight because it's expensive to be fit,' say, 'I will eat clean and healthy within my budget and work out at home to get in the best shape.'

Focus on what you can control: You can't control the job market, but you can control how you present yourself, how you network, and how you develop your skills.

Find a mentor: Social media is flooded with so much conflicting and generic advice. Find a mentor who can offer you personalized guidance to help you choose the right paths for your goals.
