You’re showering all wrong! 
3 common shower mistakes Men make and how to fix them.



1. Soaping your whole body/washing too often!

When I was in high school I dormed. Somehow there became this 
underlying social stigma on showering less than 1x a day. Every day!!!

Many men think this is normal and necessary. It’s not!

When you soap too often you strip your skin of necessary 
oils and nutrients it needs to function ideally.

Do you get dry itchy skin? Overwashing may be the culprit.

Speaking of overwashing. You don’t need to soap your entire body.

Unless you’re soiled/dirty your arms, torso, and legs don’t require soaping. Sweat is water soluble and washes off these areas. No soap needed.

You only need to soap areas where bacteria thrive. Folds where skin 
touches skin. Pits, rear, privates, toes. If you have a big chest or 
folds of fat you should wash in those creases as well.

You can rinse with water daily if you’d like 
but you’re soaping too much too often.

Feeling clean is a feeling. Facts over feelings.

2. Not washing your face/using the wrong product.

Many guys don’t wash their faces. Your face is the most exposed area of skin on your body. It picks up filth and pollution all day long.

Please wash that off at the end of the day.

Many guys who wash their faces use shampoo, soap, or body wash. Please don’t.

Your face skin is more delicate and prone to irritation. Irritation over time compromises skin function and can speed up aging.

The #1 priority when handling your face is to be gentle. Get a gentle cleanser like Vanicream and use that to wash off the day.

Other soaps are too harsh and stronger than you need in order to get clean.

3. Shampooing too often/not using conditioner.

Shampoo is not meant to clean your hair.

Let me repeat that-

Shampoo is not meant to clean your hair!!!

Shampoo cleans your scalp. Your hair just needs water in order to get clean. Any excess oils will be washed away by the extra shampoo from your scalp.

Your scalp is skin. If you over strip it of oils and nutrients you will end up with dry, flaky, irritated, and extra oily scalp, which can cause hair loss.

You don’t need to shampoo more than 1x a week. 

Don’t completely stop shampooing either (yes, that's a thing people do. #NoPoo)
You need to prevent pore clogging and oil buildup without over stripping your scalp.

When you stop shampooing as often you may notice a short term surge in oil. This is because you’ve disrupted your natural production.

Your oils will balance and you’ll likely experience better hair than you imagined (all my friends who try this have come back to me to report the magic.)

Use a conditioner every time you shower. Conditioner puts nutrients and moisture into your hair. Make sure you let your conditioner sit for 3-7 minutes.

It’s not shampoo! Don’t just rub it in and wash it out.

The kid was me.

My mother rushed out to find me in the street next to our house. 

Fine, happy. 

A rattled older woman standing beside her car.


I had taken my Fisher Price Cozy Coupe out for a ride.
It was my car. Cars drove in the street.

Pretty sound logic right?

Now prepare yourself for a logical stretch. 
We’re gonna make this about style.

We all take our cozy coupes out into the street.

We bring our immature mindsets, childish worldviews, and insecurities out into the street of life.

Sometimes we’re lucky and it’s a quiet street, and some old lady stops and helps.
Other times… varying degrees of “not so okay”


Self development is the process of building our cars while we drive treacherous roads. 

(wild isn’t it?)

I truly believe that image is a step in this process. 
A low risk way to both express and discover who we are.


You probably have a pretty clear picture of the sorts of cars you like, right?

You’re the vehicle that drives the road of life. Your body, mind, soul.
Doesn’t it make sense to know what that looks like too?


(My mother loves telling that story. She recently told it to my kids. Thankfully they haven’t made the brilliant logical leaps of my youth.)

Something interesting about style is that there's so much history to draw upon.

Is this military inspired? Or is this Punk inspired?

Fatigue green is a staple of both. One inspired the other. 
Now one piece can reference either.

One of the features that makes style so personal is that it's rooted in your experiences and reference points.

Nobody has to fully understand the nuanced thought behind your choices.

But when there is intention it's palpable. Intention makes your clothing an extension of you.

Not just a tarp placed upon your nakedness. Social shackles.

This look is about as Rugged as you'll see me.

My primary Archetypes are Refined (from my Orthodox Jewish roots) and Rebel (My creative, Novelty seeking, philosophical, "other," personality)

The Black Tee, Green Cords, Doc Martens, and cartoon messenger bag all lean heavily into the rebel archetype.

Black is a very "Alt" color. Melancholy and Power.

Green pants are uncommon in my circles. 
Even if they're not so rebellious in the grand scheme.

Docs have a rich history. While they don't point to any specific tribe, they're worn by pretty much ever rebel subculture.

Wearing a bag is already unusual for most guys. But Cartoon? 
Hand drawn cartooning & comic art will always be close to my heart.

The simplicity of the Tee and the cut of the pants tap into the refined archetype. Not as much as I usually prefer.

The jacket is what really sets the mood and pulls the whole look towards rugged.

Style is language. When you learn how to speak it you're able to:
Pre-plan what you buy.
Buy pieces that mix and match easily.
Get rid of pieces that don't represent you.
& so much more.

I'm usually pretty open minded especially when it comes to style.

But one trend has me all bent outta shape.

What are your intentions?



Something I think about a lot is motivation and intention.
Why do I want to do this?

Like so much of life you black and white think about motivations.
Good/bad, wrong/right, pure/impure, etc.


You judge yourself and others based on intentions.

“They wanted to hurt me.” “They made the right decision for the wrong reasons.” “they’re only nice because they want something.”

“I want this for the right reasons.” “I’m kind for pure reasons only.” “I just care about health, not vain needs like being attractive.”


You hide your less savory intentions from yourself. You fixate on them in others.
You deprive yourself of good things because your reasons aren’t “right.”


The reality of intentions/motivations is that they’re layered. For everything we want to do there is a layer cake of higher and lower motivations.

You want to get in shape to be healthy, and attractive, and enviable, superior, confident, a good role model, the list continues.

Instead of judging your “bad” motivations you can simply acknowledge them.
You can even thank them for helping motivate better life outcomes for you.


I have very pure intentions in my style and working to help others.
Respecting others, making the world more inviting and beautiful, making people comfortable, helping guys connect more with confidence, help guys see themselves as they really are…

I also have shallow and dark motivations.
Being better than others at something, assuaging my inferiority/superiority complex, being so different noone can compare and find me lacking, seducing people into liking me, fooling people into seeing my good qualities…

No matter who you are or what you do, if you’re honest with yourself, you’ll have similar lists. That’s just the nature of being human.


I listened to a Podcast recently with a Rabbi who specializes in intimacy and relationships. The host asked him about motivations.

Part of him has the podcast to have a positive impact and help people. But another part wants attention, accolades, compliments, achievement, etc.

He asked if these intentions poison the “goodness” of the pod.

The Rabbi’s answer, I think, sums up how we need to see motivations. If you are making a positive impact then the “bad” motivations are just excuses not to. 

Take action, accomplish, make an impact, focus on the good.


Part of style is allowing yourself to lean into your inherent goodness. Give yourself permission to see and share your best qualities.

When I hear guys say they don’t care how they look I hear a list of motivations to hide behind indifference and mediocrity.

It is natural and good to want to be perceived positively. I hope you give yourself permission to explore and express your best self.

"Black" monochromatic with a pop of color/pattern.

I love the Enneagram and I always chuckle when I think about something Richard Rohr said about type 4s.

"They love black.....black is the tragic color but it's also the color of dignity. If at all possible they will wear a mauve scarf (pantomimes throwing a scarf over his shoulder.) over the black."

This scarf isn't muave....
oh, well.

Black turtleneck- rebel, artist, curator vibes.
Grey whale corduroy- my undying 90s nostalgia.
Trench Coat- they make anything into a full look.
Scarf- Can I be creative enough? (said like Chandler Bing)
Tabi Sneakers- Normal is a challenge for me.
Aviators- Dolce Vita

The archetypes as colors.

If you’ve followed me for a while you know that I take a deeply psycho/spiritual approach to style.

I operate using 3 archetypes. Rugged, Refined, & Rebel.

I’m always looking for ways to express the simplicity and complexity of my ideas and recently the concept of primary colors bubbled up.

I’d imagine you’re all aware of the primary colors? 
The 3 colors from which all other colors spring forth.

Red, Blue, & Yellow.

In a way they’re too simple to fully describe the infinite shades and tones of color available to the eye. Yet they encompass all of it.

They can be adjusted and mixed to make any combination the human imagination can perceive.

The same can be said of the archetypes.
They are the primary colors of style.

Though they cannot fully describe the complexity they each hold. They possess infinite combinations and expressions.

You would never say that red, yellow, and blue aren’t complete enough. You can use them as guidance to understand all colors.

Colors also bring to mind many different objects, emotions, and experiences.

So too the archetypes.

Rugged brings to mind all sorts of terrain, types of work, texture, etc.

Refined conjures varying social systems, etiquette, hierarchies, etc.

Rebel is as diverse as there are causes. There is always something to rebel against and so many ways to do so.

All men will fall into a mix of these archetypes.

Discovering the unique balance and expression of them is the key to unlocking your personal style and more of yourself in the process.
