Thing is, you've probably accepted this as gospel, as you've been told this by your Grandma, Grandad, Mum, Aunt Sally and well, its been etched in your mind. And you've probably told other folks. And they've told folks...

As we get into that time of the year when plans are being made for eCom brands for how their site performs and serves customers, I want you to make sure you haven't got the 'stubborn farmer' scenario in your business. 

'Our customers see the X as the hero product - it needs to be everywhere'
'Branding needs to be the core focus on the product page, as this what drives customer sales'
'Curated bundles are the only way we can get customers to buy more than one.'

Challenge it. 
Find data.
Get data.
Test.

Different types of agencies don't always see eye to eye:

PPC on SEO Agencies - 'Oh yeah, the 'it's a long game' guys.'
SEO on PPC - 'Oh yeah, the 'ROAS is a meaningful metric' guys.'
Email on PPC - 'Erm, that's our sale.'
PPC on Email - 'Erm, that's our sale.'
CRO on Dev - 'Are they still working through that to do list for the site?'
Dev on CRO - 'Are they still 'testing' that new PDP?

But the one thing they can agree on - the product page is the most important page for getting tangible growth on an eCom store.

Try this. 

Call a meeting with all of them, ask them what they want and need from the product page and see if you can turn this into a coordinated plan.

Just don't mention the 'A' word.

'We'll do CRO for 6 months tops...'

There's still a lot of thinking about CRO as a temporary campaign: hire an agency or allocate a quarter to run some tests, get a nice conversion bump, and then check "conversion optimisation" off the to‑do list. 

Look, a 3-6 month sprint of CRO work can indeed give some great improvements. After a few months of testing and tweaks, you might see your conversion rate climb and think 'job done'. The thing is, treating CRO as a one‑and‑done project is a route to a hiding. You won't like hearing this, but optimisation is never truly finished. How can it be? When you're football team buys all the best players and wins every game, does that continue in perpetuity?

I'm a Villa Fan. I know it doesn't.

Your customers’ behaviours and preferences are constantly changing, your product lineup and marketing strategies switch up, and you competitors are tweaking their sites too. It's best to think of CRO a continuous cycle or a company habit, not a finite task. 

The brands that win in the long term constantly measure and improve. After the first six months, you’ll have new insights that open up another round of opportunities. You can then focus on increasing average order value, improving repeat purchase rates, or streamlining your mobile experience. There’s always a next leverage point. Also, the most significant gains often come from compounding many smaller wins over time. Dozens of 1% and 2% improvements across different parts of your funnel can add up to growth you’d never get if you stopped after one phase. 

See CRO as an ongoing investment in keeping your site at peak performance, just like the rest of the key tools of SEO, PPC and Email/Retention.

Having been a Business and Economics teacher (yeah I know, they let me teach?) it's always been interesting comparing the 'textbook' models versus the realities of running your own business. 

Let's take the 4 Ps - Product, Place, Price and Promotion.

Like when you teach this, making decisions on price is the least sexiest, least enjoyable of the 4Ps, but arguably, one of the most important. The thing with eCommerce is that pricing should really be worked on at two levels:

1. Unit eConomics - You know that thing you see on LinkedIn posts, but essentially just means get some balls and some time to work out what you really make on everything you sell and stop pretending revenue is king.
2. Pricing Psychology - Once you've nailed the unit eConomics of what do you need to sell at to who and how many times, now you can get your Kotler textbook out and go wild with some of the pricing ideas:
   
   - 'Charm' pricing - ending the value in a .99 or .97
   - 'Decoy' pricing - Basic, Standard, Premium
   - Bundling

Look, the list goes on - and the great thing is that these psychological plays can be A/B tested - BUT they must still make sense from a UE perspective.

• Rush through the onboarding and have little time to strategically assess whether its truly the right thing to do for the brand.
• Expectations are sky high, never met, and client never becomes a long term client.

So now, we just don't. We say no. We lose of the cash, but don't have the stress and disappointment.

Most high street and food retailers jack up AOV in easy ways. Here's a few:

• H&M Place baskets of socks next to the always long line as your waiting to checkout.
• Lidl GB put the biltong by the checkout as your waiting to pay.
• Boots UK put the baskets of hand cream, paracetamol and other every days by the queues.

You buy them, I buy them, we all buy them and the principle is simple:

When folks are about the pay, put something under their nose thats a fraction of their overall spend thats most folks need.

Thing is, you know a damn site more about your customers. Imagine if H&M could show me a selection of loafers that I coukd wear without socks while I was in the que because they know i've bought plenty before. 

They'd be winning wouldn't they?

But you can do that. For ALL of your customers at different levels.

Come on, time to have a serious look at how you can jack up that AOV.

'Jesus, CRO is expensive.'

Yes, when you treat CRO as an investment.
But here's a rule of thumb...

Set yourself a budget and targets.
- 3-5% of monthly revenue.
- Aim for breakeven by month 3 of implementation
- And a clear ROI by month 6

After that continued investment should be small wins compounding.
Bigger brands see results faster because of economies of scale.

'But can you actually help OUR specific team?

Let's answer this one in reverse...

But sometimes it can be the right thing to do.

We had a crisp (soz America) where Every CTA button on the PDP looked the same - Add to Cart, Rewards, Chat - the whole shabang.

There was no clear priority, users weren’t sure where to click - confusion ensues as we saw from the heatmaps.

So, against every CRO consultant’s better judgment…the team changed the Add to Cart button colour to make it stand out.

And guess what? It worked. Big time - 8.40% increase in Conversion Rate + 10% increase in Average Order Value.

A client of ours has some session recordings that showed all the signs of misclicks and frustration and my team knew why.

In their nav, the menu had accordion-style (+) icons, but on mobile, they obscured visibility - folks struggled to navigate - and just like a confusing restaurant menu, folks stall and don't buy/order.

To tackle this, the team replaced the + icons with > icons, creating a smoother, more intuitive menu experience.

The results:
