I crashed hard in 2022.

Working 16-hour days.
Replying to emails at 2am.
Pride myself on being "always on."

Then one morning, I couldn't get out of bed.

Brutal truth:

Running on empty isn't strength.
It's stupidity disguised as hustle.

When you're fried:

→ Your best ideas die

1️⃣ HARD STOPS (Non-negotiable)
I log off at 10pm. If it's urgent, they'll call.

2️⃣ BLOCK THE CALENDAR
15 minutes between meetings. That's breathing room.

3️⃣ THE WEEKLY DIGITAL SABBATH 
Every Sunday: What's actually urgent vs what's just loud?

4️⃣ "NO" IS A COMPLETE SENTENCE
Stop explaining. Stop apologizing. Just no.

5️⃣ DELETE THE HERO COMPLEX
Nobody's giving you a medal for burning out. They're planning your replacement.

6️⃣ SLEEP LIKE YOUR JOB DEPENDS ON IT
Because it does. 6.5-7 hours. 

(I’m 42 now and wonder how I managed to get by with 5 hours of sleep in the past! 🫠)

Why?
She challenged him - in front of everyone.

She was right.
But she embarrassed him.

That’s how good people get sidelined.
Not for speaking up — but for how they do it.

How to disagree and keep your job:

They’re TOO BUSY doing the work to shout about it.
That’s the problem.

The loudest voices have the least experience.

I've seen in-house lawyers work harder than BigLaw.
Just with worse pay.

Here's what nobody tells you:

Before you jump from private practice, answer these 7 questions:

1/ "What drains your soul faster?"

Client demands at 11pm?
Corporate politics at 9am? 

Both are hard. 
Pick your hard.

2/ "Do you need someone watching you work?"

Private practice = Nobody's chasing you
In-house = Your boss sits 5 feet away

I've seen self-starters suffocate in-house.
And structure-lovers drown in firms.

Know yourself first.

3/ "What feeds your ego?"

Need that "Partner" title? → Law firm
Want to say "I'm a legal counsel"? → In-house

Both are valid.
Just be honest about what drives you.

4/ "Can you handle being invisible?"

Law firm wins = Your name on the deal
In-house wins = CEO gets the credit

I know lawyers who thrived on quiet impact.
And others who withered without recognition.

5/ "Are you a specialist or a generalist?"

Private practice sharpens your blade.
In-house makes you a Swiss Army knife.

One lawyer told me: "I went from being the M&A expert to the 'figure-it-out' person."

Some love it. Some hate it.

6/ "What's your relationship with money?"

Law firm = Clear path to $$$
In-house = Salary ceiling (but stock options?)

I've seen partners take 70% pay cuts to go in-house.
Happy as ever.

I've also seen the reverse.
Miserable.

7/ "Are you running TO something or FROM something?"

This one's brutal.

If you're burnt out in private practice...
In-house won't fix that.

Different stress. Same you.

Fix your foundation first.

But here's what I know after 15 years of placing lawyers:

The ones who thrive?
